hi fencer!!! I wanted to ask you something, Kawanami (free’s director) commented something in the new interview and I was hoping if it’s not too much trouble you’d be able to translate what it says. I was particularly interested in this part referring to the pictures on top(I think):
次は凛が東京の街を爆走するシーンです。「お前の気持ちに、気付かないフリして……」と言うセリフを初号試写で自分で聞いて、「えっ？恋心！？」みたいに思ってしまったのですが、本当の意図は違いまして。2期9話という絵コンテと演出を担当した話数に、遙のことが「わかんねーよ」という鈍い凛と、「わかるよ」という真琴の対比が描かれています。ですが、あのときの凛も実は明らかにおかしい遙の様子には薄々気づいていたんですよね。でも、どこか自分の理想を優先してしまったというか、「俺と遙は世界に向かって進んでいくんだ」という想いが強すぎて気づかないふりをしてしまった。なので、ここでの気持ちとは、「あのときも、もっとちゃんと気づいてやれていれば」という反省を含んだ心を抱えて爆走している、という解釈になります

In the storyboard for ES episode 9 and the few episodes I directed, you had the imperceptive Rin thinking, 'I don't get you at all!' about Haruka and then conversely Makoto who said, 'I understand you,' but deep down, Rin actually did have an inkling of understanding about Haruka's obviously out-of-character behavior. But perhaps he somehow gave in to his personal idealizations [of what Haruka was supposed to be], and his conviction that, 'Haruka and I are definitely gonna take on the world!' was just overwhelmingly strong, so he pretended not to recognize what was happening. So regarding his feelings in this scene, you're meant to see that he's going crazy, heart full of regret that, 'Back then, I should have done a better job of addressing your feelings.'"

The Final Stroke Part 2 that when Haru and Rin are practicing on their own, in their separate training sites, the flags at the pool are white + their respective image colors (blue for Haru and red for Rin), but after they reunite at the night pool and start training together, the flags share both of their colors ;;;;;;;

The idea of this post was from this twitter post. Just thought I should expand on this...hehehe
A brief intro: I'm an English tutor and I teach English to Japanese people.
So, naturally, I talk to Japanese people on a daily basis, sometimes we discuss articles, lesson materials, but sometimes we also do "Free Conversation" - like, just talking to each other casually about anything.
I took the opportunity then, and asked them to tell me what did Sousuke mean by what he said here (see pics above). I showed them the exact sentence/dialogue, and let them interpret it however they see fit.
This was Sousuke's dialogue in Japanese: 「さすが、お前が惚れ込んだだけのことはある」.
First student goes:
As per this student of mine, this sentence in particular has some romantic undertones in it. When my student asked, "from what movie was that?" I told them it was from the anime, "Free!" and as it turned out, they know Free! even thought they never watched it. They're like, in their 40s.
Today, I had another conversation with a different student, and this time, he's in his 60s.
This was his interpretation, and get this, he even put emphasis on each word as he said: "You have such a nice taste... for choosing / falling in love with this guy."
And this was after I told him it was from a sports anime, and the speaker was a guy, telling it to another guy, about another guy.
2nd student even told me: "The one talking (Sousuke) was impressed by the person (Haru) he was talking about with the receiver (Rin), that's why he said such a thing... and he said that the receiver (Rin) has such a nice taste."
Haruka, Makoto, and Kuramakto Misaki
In this scene Makoto was feeling unsure as he and Haruka walked around Tokyo when they met Misaki-kun. When they saw his passionate feelings for racing, Haruka and Makoto both thought the same thing. But when Misaki-kun said “I want to become better at free!” it also overlapped him with Haruka himself. In Free ES ep 8 Makoto had already decided to go to college in Tokyo, but actually standing in Tokyo and seeing the different surroundings make him worry. In this scene, meeting Misaki-kun, who is a combination of both Haruka and Rin, and seeing his passionate feelings, returns him to himself. It also reminds Makoto of the important bonds with the relay members he has now and from the relay he swam in elementary school, which was written about in the original novel ‘High Speed’. This scene combined with the pool scene after it really made me feel something and is one of my favorites in the movie.

When I talk about Matsuoka Rin with someone else, the first thing that springs to my mind is his smiling face. His dazzling smile from when he said “I’ll show you a sight you’ve never seen before.” Even now I still think about it at times. If only at that time… If I hadn’t run into Rin at that railroad crossing during that that first year of middle school winter break. If only I had hurried and crossed when the crossing signal at the light before was flashing. Or stopped at a convenience store and read a magazine. No, or better yet, if I hadn’t thought to go out at all that day. I should have stayed in my room and read a book. Then I wouldn’t have run into Rin, so then I wouldn’t have won and hurt him, and then I wouldn’t have parted from my new middle school friends, and I probably wouldn’t have made the choice to stop swimming either. Or maybe… It’s possible that, that day, it was an unavoidable fate that I run into Rin. It might have been fated that no matter what stops I made, or what detours I took, or even if I never left my house, that we would have been pulled by some invisible force, and in the end we would have met somewhere else besides that railroad crossing…
That Matsuoka Rin has returned. Holding the trophy we buried 4 years ago, that Makoto, Nagisa, and I had snuck into Iwatobi SC in order to dig up. Matsuoka Rin was there. I believed we would meet again ever since I saw the phrases written on the wall under the sakura tree yesterday at Iwatobi Elementary, but I never imagined it would happen so fast. If our meeting during the first year of middle school was fate, then our second meeting in the run down Iwatobi SC was also fate. The same Iwatobi SC as his breakdown. Iwatobi SC that is now rundown in the middle of the night. We’re slaves to our fate, bound and shackled to it. The Matsuoka Rin that returned from Australia wasn’t the Rin from Elementary school who I swam in a medley relay with, nor the Rin who I raced against during the winter break middle school. His whole body was shrouded in a ferocious aura, he seemed like a completely different person from back then. It would be a lie to say I didn’t have a hunch this would happen. It’s because I felt something that I wore my swimsuit under my clothes. Even though there was no reason for the rundown SC’s pool to be filled with water, and a race against him would have to wait. But all Rin said was “Let’s race, Haru.” It wasn’t the Rin who lost to me and said “I’ll quit swimming” while crying. Nor the one who smiled and said “Let’s swim in a medley relay together!” It wasn’t either of those Rins, and yet all I felt was a little relieved.
Hina, all the RinHaru fandom say that JOY is a song by Haru dedicated to Rin, but do you have any official material to support that? I can't find proper information about it
Let’s say it will be difficult to find any official material that explicitly states that JOY is Haru’s love song about Rin XD But I doubt official material will ever confirm any ship, tbh.
But all you need is to read the lyrics, really. It’s pretty obvious that Haru is talking about Rin and referencing the time they spent together when they were at school, how much JOY that brought him, how now he pretended so hard that he had forgotten about it that he almost forgot for real (remember this is a s1 song), how the water connects them and brings them together, etc.
Just look up a translation and you’ll know why people say what they say about it 🌸
There is a post by Denshamagic about Rin and Haru’s character songs. Here you have the official description btw. I hope someone can translate Rin and Haru’s descriptions completely so we can confirm what we already know: JOY is Haru’s song about Rin.
Joy A song composed from Haruka’s heart about his thoughts toward Rin who showed him a sight he’d never seen before, and him remembering the fun of swimming in a relay with friends that he’d forgotten somewhere along the way. From the pop melody and the title ‘joy’ it really conveys Haruka’s happy feelings. Break our balance This is a song in which Rin’s aggressive personality is combined with the aggressive beats, and then paired with lyrics to effectively symbolize how he railed up he is by his rival Haruka. However, the places that he wants to improve in are places that he can’t improve, so you can also feel it oozing with how he’s trapped in his irritation and conflicted emotions. And because of Rin’s excellent English pronunciation, you should keep a look out for his super cool rap!
