already answered here but i can go more in depth. i was saving "heretic pride" as a title until jetspeed won the tag belts, i mildly poke at "waiting for the tag belts to be really special" in other people's love for each other but i think i decided "heretic pride" was a fine title. i was running out of kind ones. all my fics are set loosely in the same chronology so other people's love for each other will exist inside the heretic pride wip. i may write the onscreen sex that's offscreen in that fic but however i slice it it IS going to be weird and about kevin's slowly-growing want for more control and acclaim in his situation.
heretic pride the ao3 series is and always will be giving people jetspeed characterization like a pill wrapped in cheese.
"Guys!"
Mike's voice cuts through both of them like a scythe through grass. They don't raise their voice, not ever— not unless they're in a match, planning, coordinating, yelling out in pain. Kevin knows that because it's been more than half a year, and Adam seems to have just felt it click in his head.
Mike slowly lowers their hands from where they had them, falling slack at their sides. "It doesn't matter," they remind. They're already moving to unwrap the tape from around their wrists. Shedding the match from their form. "We pick ourselves back up and we keep going."
Adam, dryly, says: "Right." There's a red-pink mark at his temple that catches the light— an imprint of Max's diamond ring. The deathmatch must be hanging over him. Kevin's… frustrated, emotionally, cycling through if he'd kept focus and if I stayed ready, but Mike's— exasperatingly— right. Picking this apart isn't the answer right now. "Sorry," he tacks on.
like the betrayal’s always going to be worse if they cared about you and it didn’t matter. someone discards you because they didn’t give a shit, then you can be angry about that, you can feel vindicated in that, you can get over it. but if they can look you in the eyes and say “I love you. I would make the same choice again.” You will never sleep peacefully again, is all.
“I thought they cared about me, but they were lying this whole time.” <- tired. boring. removes all the nuance of this relationship to make it easier to move on from.

heretic pride is, a bit obviously, an installment of the heretic pride jetspeed series i have. sax rohmer #1 is also that but that's for speedball during the c2 and not... drumroll... kevin, holding the trios titles with speedball and hangman, and the worst day of his life: that one dynamite where he lost against MJF and lost the trios titles in the same night! i am almost certain that The Worst Day of Kevin's Life™ is, along with swerve's one (1) offhand comment, why kevin turned heel. lowkey i am glad something happened sooner rather than later because i was running out of happy songs off of the heretic pride album
"They cheated." If MJF didn't cheat, Kevin would be world champion. If the Don Callis Family didn't cheat, they'd still be trios champions— he should have been there for Mike, he thinks, suddenly. If he was there, if he stopped that bullshit, Mike would be TNT champion.
"People always will," Mike shoots down. "That's how you know they're scared. If they can't beat you clean, they go low."
"Hangman—"
"It's not about Hangman," Mike stresses, saintlike. "Or Max, or Kyle, or anyone in the Don Callis fuckin' Family. It's about who is the better team, who is the better man, and if they can prove it."

there is a person on the internet who, valiantly, is trying (and succeeding!) to make betas compelling. if alphas are the providers and omegas the receivers, what are betas? adjudicators. and they unwittingly used a photo of who is definitely speedball mike bailey in the second video and that made me have thoughts and also opinions
it's set in the beautiful hell of late january/early february 2026 where jetspeed is being meddled with by swerve strickland and used by hangman adam page. kevin swerve and hangman are all alphas. speedball is a beta with a very important job to do.
Hangman's very brief call, fortunately placed at a time Mike simply forgot to set their phone back on silent after coordinating with a DoorDash delivery driver, gives them three pieces of spoken information and two pieces of implied information.
The spoken things are easy. Hangman and Kevin are not hurt, which immediately assuages a check-all-bases fear they keep having about the two of them going off for singles matches. They're durable, sure, but any little thing can go wrong. While Mike was eviscerating a chicken-bacon-avocado wrap, they have been hanging out— presumably fucking, or something, Hangman danced around that part. They, along with Swerve, are in Swerve's fancy-as-hell "Strip View" room, which, given the placement of the Palms (not on the Strip) means you get a great view of the Rio and middling views of the backs of Caesars Palace and the Bellagio.
The unspoken things, with Hangman, are also easy. The first one is that he's worried. Not immediate cause for concern; Hangman does a good job of hiding it with affable champion grace and homespun charm, but he's basically always worried. They caught him picking at his hangnails a couple hours after the horsecock promo, tripped into some weird spiral about it. A couple gentle words seemed to set him straight. No, Hangman, your… hardware, is not actually why we are teamed. That kind of thing.
The second is that Hangman cannot fix this problem, and that they can. He's hesitant, over the phone, to even admit it. This happens when they're trying to plan synchronized spots and he knows they need to work around a fault of his but he doesn't want to say he's got a fault. They're starting to be able to smell it on him— or imagine it, from far away. It's gnarled into so many parts of how he interacts with others like, for lack of a less on-the-nose simile, a tumbleweed tangled in a chain-link fence.
Mike knows what this is pointing towards. After all, everyone has an important job to do.

yes it is from the 100gecs song! i think whenever i finally write something substantial about it, it's going to end up like anima rising where i wrote it for my id and then it bloats out of proportion with nuance. not only do i want to write moonlight express for speedball tag team romance* fic completionism (i have jetspeed, speedmount, bird law AND speedball x something under my belt), i do think speedball needs a win. and what better way to do that than going back to mania weekend 2023 where they're filming keep it kayfabe and doing 11 shows in 3 days and mao goes "woah man jesus christ" and speedball goes "whart".
i must understand more things about mao before i do anything about it though.
