Left Behind

          Eyes closed, counting down. It’s simple, she’s playing hide-and-seek with her best friend Riley. Not all that impressive if this were to be modern times, but in a world littered with infected you’ve got to make the most out of what you do. People could die in the blink of an eye, there’s no point worrying about whether or not you’re going to survive through the day or not. Just…try and have fun wherever you go. And besides, they’d checked—no infected anywhere around this area. She was 100% sure of it. No infected around here, otherwise she’d be dead already. They see with sound, and the two of them have been talking to each other basically all day. Any single one of them would have jumped out at them by now, this was super safe. And if she somehow ran into infected while looking for her best friend—she’s fucked. That’s the blunt way of putting it.

          She doesn’t actually know where Riley’s hiding right now, the joys of playing hide and seek. A set distance was put out, considering it was only the two of us and even if they’d already checked the place to see if infected were around, there could still be the possibility of them running into one—or many. Not like she wanted to, because those things were seriously creepy. Still, right now her main focus was finding Riley, because who knows where her best friend is hiding in between all this debris and dust. She’s sure a good hider though, that’s for sure. Almost done counting now, and she can finally start her hunt.

     Quietly the older girl crept from her hiding spot behind a large cinder block, spying for her friend that let it be known that the timer was done. These moments were so far and few between, and considering the trouble they got into in the past? By far more tame. 

     Such events could've been blamed on Riley's over zealous nature when it came to beyond the quarantine zones. A life beyond being a soldier and rules; the outside was as wild and free as her personality, but by far more dangerous and pessimistic. 

     Immediately she dropped to her knees, palms pressed against the cold ground while she heard Ellie scuffling close by. There was no way she was going to allow her friend the satisfaction of winning.
