rileyadamsâ:
Riley frowned, not sure what to make of the manâs background. In a way, he might have been better off without a father and she was reminded of how much a father would impact her life. Sure, she was old enough to have more control but he was her father. What did that even mean at this age? Riley had been fine without a father and she was happy so she wasnât sure she even wanted one to shake things up. Now that the possibility was more real, she was regretting not putting more thought into it.
âAre you sure he will?â She couldnât help but be somewhat self-conscious. She was a charmer and endlessly seductive. She knew that men loved her, but her usual techniques were rather inappropriate in this case so she wasnât as sure anymore. Strip away that attractive confidence and what was she really? Why was she even scared? She was never scared dealing with people. âMom, what if he hates me? Iâm not exactly perfect. Iâm not sure I can do this anymoreâŚâ Riley walked around with confidence and poise so it was rare for her to actually sound unsure but she never hid anything from her mother and was always willing to be vulnerable around herâthe one woman she knew would always protect her.
.
Katherine placed the hammer down, and moved to hug Riley, she never saw her daughter like that, worried, the look almost broke her heart, no one was capable of hating Riley, not even David hated her, and he had more reason than anyone else for that. She placed a kiss on top Riley head and gave her total attention to her daughter, the docks could wait a little longer.
âI know heâs not going to hate you. There was a time I thought he was going to hate me.â She admitted, it was weird to tell those feelings out loud, but if it could help Riley to understand her father a little better. âYour father always wanted to fall in love and have a family of his own, so when we start to have feelings for each other, I was sure he was going to hate me because he would have to give up his dream, I would have a family with someone else while people in town would say he was doing this for money or statues or whatever lie they came up with. Even knowing all this, all he did was smile, kiss me and promise me that he would always be by my side and that he had a new dream.â all this felt like a lifetime ago. âYouâre his family, youâre his daughter, youâre the realization of our love for each other and his dream coming true, it is impossible for him to hate you.â Kate smiled at Riley.Â
Riley leaned into the hug, not caring that her mother was probably covered in who-knows-what building materials. Her mom already promised her a new dress so anything else could be easily washed off. She listened as her mother described meeting her father and frowned, unable to imagine what kind of struggle that was for him to be with her. To love someone so much that they were willing to give up their life-long dream for that person. She understood duty and necessity, but not sacrifice when one didnât need to.
âI guess neither of us were what he wanted but he loved you anyway.â The man clearly had a big heart but there was only one way to truly answer her question and it was to meet him. âWhich reminds me,â she pulled away, meeting her motherâs eyes. âHow does David feel about all of this?â She wanted to make sure her mom was okay too and that it wouldnât hurt her relationship with her husband. âIt canât be easy for him. I know I was hard enough to accept.â It was one thing to accept the child of another man from the woman you love, itâs another to accept that same man who was the one she loved prior.
kate-averyâ:
Kate chuckled. âYes, heâs a noble.â Sometimes she forgot about how much Riley didnât know about her father, she truly had closed herself of all those memories and havenât shared much with Riley. âOnce his mother passed away, his father had a hard time accepting it.â That was sugar coding, to say the least. âAfter losing most of the things, your father had to start working, and life wasnât that easy for him.â Which was why Kate fell in love with him, he wasnât a perfect dress noble, he was fun to be around, he understood what truly mattered in life.Â
She took a deep breath and nodded it. âYouâre right. Why did I raise you to be this smart.â Kate joked around, it wouldnât be easy, but the truth was always better. âOne thing I know is that heâs going to love you.â She said with a warm smile, he might, he shock to learn that he had a daughter, and a little sad that he didnât got to see her growing up, but he would love Riley no matter what.
Riley frowned, not sure what to make of the manâs background. In a way, he might have been better off without a father and she was reminded of how much a father would impact her life. Sure, she was old enough to have more control but he was her father. What did that even mean at this age? kate-averyâ:
Kate was happy to see Riley surprise. âHe is.â Kate nodded. âAs much as I would love to take credit for finding him, turns out he was on the island already.â She told Riley. âI saw him at the festival, heâs working as a mechanic now.â Which explained why they havenât bumped into each other sooner, if he was working at a club, Riley would have seen him already. âNo, heâs not here right now.â Kate told Riley, letting the hammer go and grabbing the hand of her daughter, she looked into her eyes. âI need you to remember what I told you before, he doesnât remember us.â Kate said with a sad look, taking with Darius had been very hard on her and the memory still hurt. âI kinda lied and told him he looked like someone I knew.â Kate almost never took the easy way out, this was actually the first time she did because every time she opened her mouth, the words didnât come out. âBut we can tell him if you want⌠I⌠I can tell him.â Or them, she wanted Riley to have a say in this. âWhat you want to do now, is up to you.â
Riley scrunched her nose a bit at the mechanic part. What could she say? She was a spoiled snob. âIsnât he a noble though?â Did he do it as a hobby? Riley didnât even bring her car to a mechanic let alone get her hands dirty with maintaining one. Her mani-pedis didnât maintain themselves after all and the last thing they needed was engine grease coating them.
When Kate refocused her attention, she nodded. âI remember, mom. I donât know him anyway so itâs probably easier for me to deal with it.â He was a stranger in every way to her so their dynamic wouldnât be that out of the ordinary if they met now. Her mom was the one with all the heart-wrenching memories of him. They had to be painful because it wasnât like her mom to dance around the subject if politics werenât involved.Â
At her offer, Riley took a few seconds. âI think you should tell him, mom,â she answered. âIâm not exactly sensitive with my words and I donât know him like you do.â She didnât know how he would react and truthfully, part of her worried that his reaction would hurt more than she expected it would. It could sour their relationship going forward through no fault of either of them. He needed time to process it and having to deal with her after just finding out is a lot. She knew she was a lot.Â
kate-averyâ:
Katherine smiled, she was always glad to spend some time with Riley, even being sure that this was the last place her daughter wanted to be, as much as Kate would love to take a break to check on everyone and go see how much Riley had changed Jeremiahâs place, this was more effective.
âI will buy you as many dresses as you want.â Kate said, one of the things she loved to do was to shop with Riley, her daughter had an impeccable fashion sense after all. âAnd maybe we can get you something for you to meet your father.â
âMy what?â The smile on her face melted away to reveal both confusion and mild dread. She knew she was the one that brought it up and said that she wanted to meet him but what? Already? It had only been a month or two and her mother already found him? She wasnât expecting to meet him for years! Months was way too soon. âAre you telling me heâs on the island?â How did one even prepare to meet their biological father who they hadnât seen since they were born... over a hundred years ago? She ran her hand through her perfectly straightened hair, suddenly stressed at the prospect. âHeâs not here is he?â Her eyes darted around. She definitely wasnât ready for that.Â

jeremiahxwallaceâ:
âYour mother is a great woman, took a long time for David to even be willing to see that. Iâm glad she was there for you at least.â And he meant that, knowing his soon to be wife wouldnât have turned out the way she did if her upbringing had been different. Jer smiled, taking a sip from his glass while he listened to her speak, in a way he felt relieved she saw it the same way he did.Â
Due to their difference in age, he wasnât sure at first how much they[âd be able to see eye to eye on things, but so far it just seemed to work out somehow. Though he hated to admit it, David and Kate might have been right with this match, as he knew it couldâve been much worse. âWeâll see how far that will be in the future, might be sooner than you think. Oh yes, youâre such a child.â He couldnât help but smirk, just mocking her right back. âI have no worries about you being a good mother one day though, seeing how you are with your little brother. Itâs like it just comes to you naturally. First time I held a baby I was afraid to even move, David is lucky I didnât accidentally drop him on his head.â He said with a chuckle, taking some more of his plate that he had now filled with food and making sure the glasses remained filled.Â
Riley scrunched her face, kind of skeptical. âNo offence, but sometimes I think David would have faired better if someone dropped him on his head a few times.â It wasnât to say that the man was a bad person, he just had a few traits that reflected his status. He was a prince through and through, the good and the bad. There was a darkness that came from power, even her mother and her had some of it in them. David wasnât afraid to show it though. She heard that it was more of a reflection of his father and upbringing than anything else.Â
Riley paused for a few seconds. âHow was she? His mother?â The woman that Jeremiah loved. She had to be something special to earn the dedication that Jeremiah had for her. It wasnât like David ever spoke of her and they werenât even close so her curiousity couldnât be satiated from her step-father. Her soon to be husband, however? The man who loved her and probably had nothing but praise? That was an easier person to get anything out of.Â
Katherine always liked to help, and since rebuilding the docks was a priority, it was where the princess was, just because she was from the royal family didnât mean she was going to stay in the palace, she was strong, and every person was necessary, how she could ask for everyone on the island to help if she wouldnât be there herself.
Everything seemed to be going according to schedule, and if things kept going like this, the docks would be ready before they ran out of blood rations, since that would be a bigger disaster. âCould you pass me the hammer?â Katherine asked the person next to her.
@paradisusstartâ
Riley was looking for her mother and it was easy enough to get one of her security detail to tell her where she was. Admittedly, she was a bit surprised that her mother decided to spend the day doing manual labour repairing the stinky docks, but at the same time, she also wasnât surprised. Her mother was a kind-hearted woman and seeing the future Queen willing to get down and dirty also wouldnât hurt the royal image. No one was above helping others, she supposed.
âSure, which one is that again?â she joked, taking a second or two before handing her mother the hammer. Riley was absolutely selfishly spoiled compared to her mom and wasnât afraid to joke about it. âYouâre going to have to buy me a new dress for making me come out here to see you. Iâll never get rid of the stink of fish from it.â She dramatically wrinkled her nose in disgust.
rileyadamsâ:
âRed,â Riley answered. She continued to watch Jeremiah as he sat down, explaining his reasons for the surprise. It made sense and she appreciated it but it did suddenly feel kind of realâthe idea that they would be making a family together. The whole baby thing had felt so theoretical, like some sort of transaction to get done and once the baby was out, she had done what everyone wanted, she didnât even consider that they would have to raise the baby together. In some ways, she didnât have to raise the baby, there were always nannies and staff who could take care of the child, but was that really the kind of mother she wanted to be? Her mother didnât raise her that way and from what Jeremiah said, he had no intentions of doing that either.
âI didnât know you were so into the family thing,â Riley confessed. âI figured most old-fashioned vampires preferred the âleave it to the nannyâ mentality.â Taking care of a child was labour intensive and labour was for the poor, after all. âTo be honest, I never thought much about having a family. My mom didnât really talk about it. I figured it was a sore spot for her since⌠well⌠me.â She wasnât exactly the ideal child by pureblood standards and she knew it hurt her mother to not be able to give Riley that loving family that she believed she deserved. âBut I like that⌠having a warm family for them to grow in.â She genuinely smiled, very open to the idea.
âAre you sure this isnât just another one of David and my motherâs schemes to get me pregnant though? Itâs rather swoon worthy, Lord Wallace.â she joked. She trusted Jeremiah to be on her side by now. They were the partnership her parents wanted and it was their own little way of rebelling by not giving into every single one of the royal couplesâ desires. âBecause I can assure you, our bedtime activities is enough convincing,â she winked.
*
The bottle of red wine was picked up upon her choice to open it and pour it into the two glasses that were waiting on the food filled table. Ofcourse the food was infused with blood as usual. Jeremiah got up to lift the lid off a pan of soup as a starter, though she could pick whatever she liked. âWhy wouldnât I be? I come from a family of nobility but was raised pretty normal, aside from all the training since it was expected of me.â He said, listening to her every word. âCanât have been easy for you, your biological father not being here.â He meant that in two ways, one being as he said it and two being having to deal with David as a stepfather, a role the prince didnât just accept easily.Â
He sat back in his chair a little, taking a sip. âThe thing is that Iâve raised a child, the first few years of Davidâs life I took on the parental role because his father⌠well, canât really call him a father. The King hated the baby from the start which will forever not make sense but he doesnât make sense in general so no surprise there. Once he figured out that David looked to me like a father, he sent me away and out of Davidâs life for years on missions leading his army. When I finally got to return, David was close to adulthood and I saw what years of⌠emotional neglect, to put it mildly really, could do to a child. For a child not to have a warm nest. I came back to the monster the King had created.â Jer just smiled at her remark.Â
âSo no, not a scheme, but something I want, as I refuse to let any child of mine grow up believing that he or she is unloved.â Jer never liked to talk much about the past but he knew he needed to open up more so he was trying. âI have no complaints about the bedtime activities.â Jer said with a chuckle before having some of his soup.
Riley supposed she could relate to that sentimentâbeing disliked by the king who was family. Luckily for her, her mother loved her and never did she feel unloved by her. âI didnât have a typical family but my mother loved me enough for the both of them.â She rarely felt like she was missing anything in regards to parental guidance. The only thing missing was that part of her that felt like she just wasnât good enough to be accepted into the rest of the family. She wasnât one of them even if the rest of them treated her well.
She began to dig into the food. âI agree with you though. I would never want any child of mine to feel unloved. Iâm not sure if I would make a great mother but I definitely wouldnât be a cold one.â She didnât want to raise a monster and while she thoroughly believed that vampires werenât the monsters human believed they were, they could be if not given the proper guidance. âBut hopefully thatâs far into the future. Iâm not ready to be a mother yet,â she confessed. âI am far too young.â She stuck her tongue out at Jeremiah, never willing to pass up a chance to mock her aging husband to be.
rileyadamsâ:
Riley didnât expect much whenever she arrived home, pretty used to the routine Jer and her had developed by now. He was often working late so Riley felt no pressure or obligation to ever return home early. They would catch each other in the brief gaps of their schedules and if neither of them werenât otherwise tired or not feeling up for it, they would perform their marital duties. It wasnât bad, by any means, but it also wasnât anything romantic.
It definitely wasnât special dinner worthy.
And yet that was exactly what she found herself walking into as she strolled into their dining room this particular night. Her brows were raised and her confusion high as she observed the layout before her. âWowâŚâ was all she could breathe in response. Frankly, no one has ever done this for her before. It felt so⌠homely. âYou didnât have to do any of this, Iâm already marrying you,â she joked, slipping into the ease of humour.
She took the offered seat, sitting down despite not having completely taken in what was going on. âThis is really nice, Jer⌠but did I miss a special date or something?â They didnât do this kind of stuff so she was starting to wonder if she was missing something or there was some news worth celebrating. Being surprised with dinner was not on her list of things she thought she would ever experience in their arrangement.
The first thing he noticed was easily the confused look on her face, it made him chuckle, knowing this was out of the ordinary for him to do, so it didnât surprise him that she would be confused. âOh, right, I actually forgot about that. Guess Iâll clear this this up then since youâre marrying me anyway.â He smirked a little as she took the offered seat and then took a seat himself.Â
âNot that I know of, no, should there be a special date to be able to have a meal with the one Iâm marrying?â Jer asked while he reached for the glasses. âRed or white?â A gesture to two bottles of wine accompanied the question. âThereâs no special occasion, just⌠thought it would be nice. Weâve both been busy and I know Iâve been a little distant maybe sometimes and I want to change that. Yes, weâre gonna be getting married but that doesnât mean we should live as strangers? Especially if we do succeed to have a child.â He explained  as he sat back in his sat.Â
âMaybe Iâm just old-fashioned that way but Iâd like a warm home for when we have a family.â Jeremiah wasnât sure he made much sense with this, but he wasnât planning on raising a kid in the way most Purebloods did.
âRed,â Riley answered. She continued to watch Jeremiah as he sat down, explaining his reasons for the surprise. It made sense and she appreciated it but it did suddenly feel kind of realâthe idea that they would be making a family together. Weeks had gone by almost unnoticed. Work had been busy, or in other words, David had been keeping him busy but as usual he was reminded he should put time into his engagement as well. So far it hadnât been as bad as he had feared at first, they both took this seriously, having made an old house into a home, attending events together to put themselves on display, all while also doing their own thing. Today he was home early, earlier than she was. A table was set, a table large enough to feed a family as he was still getting to know what she liked, so there was lots of everything. It included drinks ofcourse, aside from the dinner made ready. The staff had been given the evening off since he really didnât want any nosy ones lingering around them.Â
This was just a little something for her, maybe to show that he was trying and that in some ways she was growing on him, even if he really couldnât admit that out loud yet. Partly it still felt like cheating to him, but that feeling was subsiding more over time. âPerfect.â Jer mumbled as he lit the candles on the table and straightened his tie, looking up when he heard the key get put in the lock of the door and get turned. She was home. âHey⌠Sorry if this is a bit over the top. Forgive me, Iâm a little rusty at things like this, but I hope youâre hungry?â He asked, a smile on his face as he pulled a chair back for her in advance.

maxwell--carterâ:
Why Monogamy? âIâmâŚclingy. I donât like the idea of someone swiping him out from under me.â He felt his cheeks flush, âPun intended, I suppose. Heâs always been my person. Heâs always been my best friend. Iâve never considered not seeing likeâŚone person at a time.âÂ
A loveless marriage? SoundedâŚawful to him, he couldnât help the face he made. âSee thatâs what I donât understand. If vampires are looking for population- right? Thatâs why you do the whole arranged marriage thing- why not justâŚ.play the field. Wouldnât your chances be higher if everyone was doing everyone?â He paused, âYouâd at-least be in happy partnerships. Not weirdâŚcontrollingâŚ.dictator-esque engagements?âÂ
Max definitely had a point. If it was all about procreation and population, it would make more sense for any male to spread his seed everywhere. âUnfortunately, we are also old-fashioned snobby creatures and value our money and titles. Itâs all about making sure our bloodlines remain strong and our children inherit our prestige.â She gestured for him to enter one of the rooms. Along the wall were various portraits. âThese are most of the pureblood vampires of the past... or at least the closest image of them we have.â Her grandfather had been ruling quite some time and there werenât many paintings that survived that long so all of them were from memory. âThey were painted by the King himself.â
She gestured to the more modern ones, featuring the current royal family. âUnlike humans, our bloodlines actually do affect our power. Itâs not some imaginary anointment of God. The more pure our blood, the stronger, faster, and more dangerous we are. It has become an art to ensure that our children donât become too diluted.â Yes, numbers mattered, but so did the strength that came from being a vampire. âThatâs why I can be the Princessâ daughter but never be enough.â
exhumanxrheaâ:
âProbably best for the island as a whole.â She teased, grinning over at her, and as Riley continued to speak Rhea couldnât help but let out a little laugh, snorting in disbelief at the words coming out of the otherâs mouth. âWe come from such wildly different worlds..â decades ago she was living on the streets. A year ago she barely could afford renting a shitty little studio. And now here she was- room and board for free, a place of her own, a steady job⌠for the first time life was decent for her. Whereas decent was probably base-level for everything Rileyâd ever done in her life. âYou wouldnât have lasted a day in my life before here.â
Even as she spoke though, her tone was light and easy, not judging because..who was she to judge at this point? She was sure if she lived hundreds of years sheâd start amassing wealth too. And if she did, she wasnât going to exactly be modest about it. âTrust me, Iâm starting to learn that.â The comment was out of her mouth before she could realize, and she felt a little pang because she genuinely was falling in love with little Lily. If only the rest of her life could slot into place so efficiently⌠Shoving the thoughts away, Rhea shook her head a bit before turning to Riley, focusing on the here and now, âSo, aside from drinks, I seem to recall you saying youâd want to serve me other things. Care to give a girl a little hint? Or are you going to make me wait until youâve got me all liquored up, princess?â official or not, the title worked.
Riley didnât quite understand what Rhea meant by how she was starting to learn that but she shook it off. Perhaps it was just personal experience knowing how hard it was to control being a vampire overall, let alone a child one. The conversation swiftly changed, however, so Riley didnât have a chance to ask anyway.Â
At her question, Riley quirked her brow. âJust enough so that the experience is heightened.â Riley didnât believe in nor did she need to get people drunk to fall into bed with her but alcohol made things fun. She leaned forward, her finger gently tracing over Rheaâs thigh as she whispered, âAfter all, I wouldnât want you to forget me in the morning.â Not that anyone could forget her, even if they were blackout drunk⌠at least thatâs what Riley hoped.Â
The car eventually came to a stop in front of a classic looking mansion, suited and designed to match Jerâs old fashioned sensibility with a little splash of quirky for Rileyâs entertainment. The door was opened for them and she stepped out, guiding Rhea into her home. It was relatively empty, only a single maid wandering around in case Riley needed anything. âWhen I first walked into this place, it was covered in cobwebs and dust, I almost considered just turning it into a spider sanctuary but I figured I shouldnât be that wasteful with money.â
meenaxkhatriâ:
âSurprise me.â Meena grinned slightly, having composed herself a bit, although she still felt a bit shy. She couldnât shake the feeling that she knew the other. It was likely she did, as sheâd met to many people during her travels. Sheâd run into the same people several times, even some on the island! But there was something about the other that made her feel like the other should be set apart from everyone else, but she couldnât quite put her finger on it. âYou have a name?âÂ
Riley smiled at her answer and waved over the bartender. âWhy donât we start you with a mai tai?â she suggested. Sweet, easy, and slow. It wasnât her intention to get the girl drunk so it seemed like a safe choice. The bartender nodded and headed off to make the drink. âIâm Riley, how about you?â Again, she couldnât shake the feeling that she had met the girl before but Riley was a socialite and had always been a socialite. Sheâs met thousands upon thousands of people in her life and it was impossible to remember them all. Frankly, sheâs probably slept with just as many. âHow long have you been on the island?â she asked, determined to figure some part of this out.Â
rileyadamsâ:
*
Riley was pleased that Max seemed to understand that Octavia was tragically unavailable and had someone else to occupy his attention. She wouldnât blame him if he did have a thing for Octavia. Sheâs a gorgeous princess and there was something intimate about sharing oneâs blood, but she was far too reckless and powerful to safeguard any romantic relationship with a human.Â
When he accepted her offer, she nodded, pleased. âI would love that.â
She began to lead him out of the room and towards some of the more interesting ones. âAbout your best friend. Why canât you just tell them youâre in love with them?â she asked. âNo offence, but you humans donât have long to live and even have less time when youâre attractive so dilly dallying around the topic does you no favours. The answer seems stupidly easy to me.â She could never understand why people these days were so bad at communicating.Â
. He offered her his arm, trying to remain a gentleman. Heâd follow her all day if she wanted to continue to talk. But then the topic turned to one he wanted to avoid. Isak. âOh no. He knows. Heâs justâŚstruggling right now with some other stuff.â And when she put it within the lense of time, Max was questioning why he was waiting around. âHe struggles with some substance abuse. Weâre working on it- but it feelsâŚ.oddly selfish to ask him for monogamy right now.âÂ
Max wanted monogamy. He wanted the exclusivity, he didnât want to question some of the looks he and Isak got. Fuck heâd marry him, if Isak was in a better state mentally. âWhat about you? Are you seeing someone? Whatâs the trick to staying with someone for longer than an average lifespan?â
Riley shook her head in pity, only able to imagine that struggle. âMaybe if you focus on your love, it will be enough of a distraction. Or at least, it would give him a reason to want to stay sober so he could actually enjoy your company.â Riley wasnât naive enough to think that the power of love would solve everything but it couldnât hurt having something worth fighting for. âHave you ever considered you donât need monogamy? Whatâs so good about it anyway?â Riley truly would never understand the obsessive need people had to own one another. The world of love and sex had so much to offer and it was silly to reduce someoneâs ability to experience it simply because one couldnât control oneâs jealousy.
At his question, she shrugged. âIâm not seeing someone. Iâm engaged. Arranged marriage.â She held out her hand to show off her impressive ring. âBut he and I have a very pleasant understanding. We do what we need to do to make my parents happy and we donât try to control the other. Love isnât part of the deal⌠yet.â She wasnât against the idea, necessarily, she just wasnât turning her mind to it. âLove makes things messy. When vampires enter an arranged marriage, they understand that they have to work towards making the marriage work. Relying on love alone is a recipe for failure and if the couple falls out of love? Oh boy.â

Riley was a bit surprised by the bold motion but immediately grinned afterwards, more than happy to exchange a drink for a good time. âIâve been ready since the moment I stepped into this bar.â It wasnât a lie at all. She had been interested and incessantly flirting with Rhea since she met herâluckily, it didnât seem like Rhea minded whatsoever.Â
She sent a quick text message before heading out. It took her chauffeur about the same amount of time to stop in front of the bar as it took for Rhea to lock up so the door was open and ready for them by the time she turned around. âI never drink and drive,â she reassured Rhea, gesturing for her to enter the car before her. Frankly, Riley rarely drove at all, but it was a small step in impressing the conscientious bartender.Â
Rhea again found herself rolling her eyes playfully at the comment but followed her just the same, switching off lights in their wake and locking the bar up for the night. Seconds later a car was pulling up and Rhea just let out a breath, shaking her head slightly. Decades as a vampire, and a year on an island where money didnât really mean much, and still she found herself taken aback by casual displays of wealth. Case in point- a chauffeur.
âIâd be surprised if you drive at all, princess.â Rhea teased as she climbed into the car and then shifted to face her as they were driven off moments later. âLet me guess, weâre heading off to where all the estates and palace are? Or are you roughing it in a homely little apartment like the rest of us plebeians?â
Riley giggled at Rheaâs retort. She knew when she was caught and wasnât going to deny it. âI have a license, even if itâs not in use.â Why drive when she could have someone else do it while she scrolled through her social medias? Her motherâs guilt paid for everything and it would be silly not to take advantage of it. âI never claimed that I wasnât a spoiled brat, even if Iâm not officially a princess. I would never survive the life of a plebeian, even my apartment is expensive.â
Just as Rhea predicted, the loud and skyscraper-filled streets soon gave way to quieter softly-lit streets, filled with gated estates and their perfectly manicured lawns. âI actually lived in the city prior to moving in with Jeremiah but the city is no place to raise a little noble baby. They need a lot of space.â And seclusion. Vampire babies were a lot to handle and it wasnât often that they were successfully raised in urban environments, especially when vampires were still hiding their existence.

âThatâs what I said to Cyrus!â He was near pointing at her, smiling a bit more. He was too happy to be right- to have someone on his side- to care about what she had said . âAdd in that iâm stupidly in love with my best friend, and let me know what you think about the princeâs insecurity.â He stood, brushing off his pants and approaching the other. âI am so down- we can talk more too, if youâd like?âÂ

Max sat up straight, the way she spoke was telling in itself for him. As he had heard at some of the public events heâs now attended. Well that and- the last time he meant someone spontaneously in the castle was Octaviaâs fiance.Â
âOh- yea.â He paused, smiling a little bit more. âIâm Max, Iâm a friend to princess Octavia. Itâs lovely to meet you, miss.â Friend was an enough, right? She wouldnât need to know about the walking blood bag part of his title. WIth a bow of his head out of respect. He had become much more aware of how he came across to the others in the castle. Less work for the princess in the long run. âPrincess Octaviaâs in a meeting, she said I could just hang out.âÂ

Max... Now where had she heard that name before? It took her a few seconds but it finally sank in and Rileyâs eyes widened. âSo youâre the Max thatâs driving Cyrus mad.â She narrowed her eyes and took him in. âPassably handsome. Cutely nerdy. Tragically non-threatening... I donât see it.â Riley didnât understand how Cyrus could even remotely find this boy threatening to him. She shook her head and sighed. Frankly, she had been expecting some adonis brought to life and this was a disappointment.Â
âWell, Max, why donât I give you a tour instead? Iâm bored and surely you wonât deny a lady like me some entertainment?â If it wasnât the looks, there had to be something else to it, right? Riley would figure it out. She had no plans on confronting either of them about it but she was too curious to ignore the opportunity.Â
