I treat nightmares with respect, but without mystical horror. They are not a curse and not a sign from above. They are simply our own brain screaming at us that we've been ignoring our feelings for too long or have found ourselves in a truly difficult situation. The most terrifying thing about a nightmare is the feeling of complete powerlessness. We cannot control the dream; we are hostages to the plot. Perhaps that's why the practice of "lucid dreaming" is so appealing. It's an attempt to regain control over one's most hidden fear.
