you were curious as to why hana’s best friend wanted to meet all of a sudden. of course, it was a little obvious what the potential topic could be considering the festival was a little over a week ago. anton finally showed up to class today, much quieter than usual but you were happy to see him anyway.

as the lecture comes to an end, bora gestures you to go out in the hall, and once you meet out there, you walk together to the food court.

“how social are your friends?” is the first thing she asks once you take your seats. she reminds you of danielle.

laughing, you squint your eyes in confusion. “pretty social, i guess? why do you ask?”

“i want you to know that me and my friends had nothing to do with.. the thing hana did,” she bites her lower lip. “if i’m being completely honest, if she wasn’t being so suspicious before that day, if we didn’t have an argument, i probably would have defended her because well, she’s our best friend. but this is anton we’re talking about. he’s a friend of ours too and i know how much he loved her.”

not loved, loves her, you want to correct. anton told you he still loves her and a part of you is annoyed because of that. sure, you did try and comfort him by saying hana could still be the one for him, but that’s what any good friend would say. and the last thing you expected was for him to leave you on the biggest cliffhanger ever. a good, weird feeling in his chest that has nothing to do with her? his mind drifting to somewhere or maybe.. someone else?

“it’s not your fault,” you say, snapping out of your own thoughts. “and don’t worry, by the way you screamed at her and whoever that guy was, it was pretty obvious that you were just as shocked as the rest of us were.” that makes bora laugh.

“hana’s gotten us caught up in her schemes in the past, but never anything like this. we really had no idea. anton might not want to get answers, but i do,” she says. “that’s why i wanna know more about this guy.”

“you remind me of my friend, danielle,” you smile. “she was the one we were with at the festival. she’s nosey too. no offense.”

“none taken, i’ve always been like this,” bora waves you off and you both laugh. “i would do this for any of my friends. hell, i would do it for you and this is only our first conversation.”

“is that why you asked how social my friends are? to see if we can get connections?”

“exactly. but don’t worry, i’m not gonna track the guy and get him expelled from this university. i’m not that sick,” bora clears up when she sees you look a little uneasy. “hana’s been hiding a lot from us. and if this guy is the reason why, i feel like we have a right to know too.” she looks down at her lap, twiddling her numbers. you notice her lips purse, an obvious sign that she might start crying. “i almost wish i wasn’t there, ya know? i miss how things were before. but then i think about how anton would feel if he was all alone during this, seeing it all by himself and not telling anyone because that’s the kind of guy he is.”

“yeah, he seems to keep things to himself,” you add. “i think he’s just used to putting everyone else’s feelings before his own,” and bora nods in agreement.

“are you close with anton?” she asks.

“sorta kinda,” you say. “we grew up together, and were pretty close as kids, then i moved away and we didn’t talk for years. somehow i found him again when i transferred here. we definitely aren’t as close as we were before but close enough that i care for him.”

she hums. “i care about my friends a lot too, so i hope you get what i mean when i say i have to get some closure,” she says, wiping the tears that almost fell down her cheek. “will you help me?”

you sit for a second. do you want to get deeper involved? you figure nothing bad enough can happen for this to backfire later on, and bora just seems so passionate about getting answers.

how could you say no?

anton sat alone at the park that was a couple of blocks away from SNU’s campus. it was about 4 o’clock-ish, but the grey clouds filling up the sky made anton shiver as he looked around, waiting for her to arrive.

he got there about 20 minutes earlier. he needed to some time to clear his mind and prepare himself for what was to come. his phone was spammed with messages from his friends, asking him where he went off to since he turned his location off. anton had spent the last few days in his room, all of this morning, and the entire lecture he had earlier thinking about what he was going to say when he meets her face to face.

he couldn’t make up his mind. if he let it all go and put his trust in her again, he was afraid he would regret it one day. then again, hana was his first ever relationship, the first girl he ever loved romantically. well, that is, besides you of course. he almost feels like he deserves what hana did to him because of the way he’s been acting about you. you were the first girl anton has ever had real feelings for, and he was lucky enough to finally get over you by the time him and hana became. you randomly popping back into his life that day really threw everything off for him, and he wonders if things would have played out any differently if you weren’t in the picture. in his defense, though, he really did just want to be friends with you again and tried his best to not act on his old feelings, unlike hana who was seeing another guy behind his back like it was no big deal.

his friends also played a part in teasing him about you, but it really was all just jokes. they knew anton would never leave hana for you and messed with him for the pure reason of getting him worked up. but now that they knew who she truly was, they wished anton would just leave her.

but anton knows you shouldn’t impact whether or not he chooses to stay with hana, he’s better than that. it would make him just as bad as her. so after lots of thinking and battling in his head, he finally came to the conclusion of what he wanted, and he was 100% sure this would have been his decision in any kind of circumstance.

leaning back against the bench he was sitting on, anton closed his eyes, trying to ignore the rapid beating of his heart in his chest, until he hears a voice.

“toni?”

he opens his eyes, turning his head to the left and seeing hana standing a few feet away from him. her wavy hair looked slightly messy from the wind, and he gulped hard when she tucked a piece behind her ear and out of way from her eyes. she wore an oversized half zipped jacket, loose jeans and her favorite ugg boots. she had a tiny bag thrown over her shoulder, and a keychain that anton bought for her on one of their first dates hanging on the strap caught his attention.

“can i sit?” she asks. he wants to roll his eyes at how sweet she sounded, but all he does is nod. she steps forward, sitting on the farthest end of the bench. they both stay silent for a moment. neither of them wanted to speak first, but anton knew one of them had to break the ice.

“how have you been?” anton starts.

“i’ve been better,” she answers quietly. “what about you?” she asks, immediately regretting her choice of words, because who the hell would ask the guy they cheated on how he’s been doing?

“i’m sure you can guess,” he retorts. she doesn’t say anything back, gulping at his sudden change of behavior. it was rare that anton ever showed any sort of attitude towards her, even in their past minor disputes. he never stood up for himself, even when he knew hana was in the wrong, that was one of the reasons it was so easy to keep him in the dark about her lies for this long. he was gullible, blinded by love.

they continue to sit, staring in opposite directions of the park. on anton’s side, he can see a young couple holding hands in the distance, following behind a few of their friends who were laughing about who knows what as they cross the street and exit the park. on hana’s side, it’s a little less busy, a few office workers with gloomy expressions sipping their warm coffees and others frustratingly speaking into their phones, most likely arguing with another colleague or their boss.

“was i not good enough for you?” he finally asks her. she turns away, shutting her eyes tight.

hana never thought it would get to this point. she figured one of two things would happen. one, time will pass and things between her and intak wouldn’t work out, so she would continue being with anton and pretend nothing ever happened. or two, she would finally muster of the courage to end things with anton and be with intak. she never considered the possibility of anton finding out, and looking back at her thought process now, she feels stupid.

when she first met intak and started her affairs with him, she didn’t feel that guilty about it. intak was two-faced, just like her, although he had never taken part in cheating on someone or being the person someone was cheating with. as ironic as it was, he didn’t want to be the reason behind someone’s pain, which is why he asked hana to break up with anton before things between them got serious.

she agreed, because she figured she would do it sooner or later. but that day never came, and intak forced himself to be okay with it. he liked hana a lot, she liked him too, and that’s all that mattered to him.

hana was selfish enough back then to cheat, so why was this so hard for her now?

“you were perfect,” she responds. anton scoffs a laugh, shaking his head.

“wow that just makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?”

“do you want me to lie and tell you that you were a bad boyfriend? we both know that’s not true,” she looks down at her lap and plays with the keychain on her bag, anton shifting his eyes towards it.

“then why did you..” his voice got quiet. “why did you do it?”

people change, and relationships eventually become more toxic until they fall through, but that wasn’t the reason she did what she did. anton was perfect to her, but she didn’t feel the way she felt about him when they first met. instead of communicating it with him, she looked for what she craved in someone else. she liked the idea of having a dirty little secret and having a guy like anton who worshipped her. she was greedy and didn’t care about the consequences. she was cold-hearted and now that was coming back to bite her in the ass.

“i just.. didn’t feel satisfied anymore,” she answered, rolling a rock under her foot and kicking it under the bench.

“do you mean like.. our sex life—“

“no, toni. that’s not what i meant—“

“please don’t call me that anymore.”

fuck. she bit her lip awkwardly, face red from embarrassment. when her feelings for anton were at an all-time low, she stopped calling him ‘toni’, and he obviously didn’t like that. but now the rolls were reversed. she wants to feel like everything is still okay.

“that’s not what i meant, anton..” she corrects herself. “it had nothing to do with any of that, besides we only did it once..” hana trails off, not really wanting to discuss the one time they had sex because that wasn’t the issue at hand. anton can only nod awkwardly.

“if you had done this earlier into our relationship, maybe i wouldn’t have cared so much,” he says. “but finding out after a year? how long have you been seeing this guy anyway?”

“that’s not important.”

he sighs loudly, stressfully rubbing his eyes. “you’re unbelievable.”

“look, i made a stupid decision. i know i did. i wasn’t thinking when i started all of this and i’m sorry,” hana says. her voice was getting weaker, the guilt taking over. she thought just breaking up with anton would be a piece of cake, but now that they were having this conversation, she feels more attached to him than ever. she promised intak she would break things off with anton, but it was starting to become way harder than she expected.

“i told my friends i still loved you.”

for some reason, her heartbeat fastens. sure she cheated on him but any guy like anton saying he loved you would make a girl react this way, so how can you blame her?

“i told them that you were still my girlfriend. that i still wanted to be with you. that we could work this out because even thought you hurt me, i really thought you were still the one for me.”

he taps his foot on the ground, waiting to see if she was going to respond. when she doesn’t, he turns to look at her, noticing the blush on her cheeks. he wasn’t sure if it was from the cold or from the words that were coming out of his mouth, but either way, it made him feel sorry for what he was about to say next.

“but i was wrong.”

ouch. hana swears she could physically feel her heart crack into a million pieces.

“i was trying to convince myself that i still loved you. but honestly.. i can’t. i can’t love you anymore. i don’t love you anymore. now i’m just done. i’m done with us, with this relationship. i’m done with you,” he says, swallowing back his tears. “i hate the feeling of knowing you were hiding something from me. i feel so fucking sorry for myself. i should have known when you came to my dorm and smelled like him.”

she cringes, not realizing that anton’s suspicions must’ve started that day. “anton please—“

“i don’t think i could ever forgive you and that hurts because fuck. i loved you,” he says.

“please don’t do this. i don’t want to lose you, please. i— i love you,” she says, finally shifting to face him. she reaches for his shoulder but he doesn’t move, just looks at her and shakes his head.

“you don’t love me. you’re attached now that i want to leave you. i bet you didn’t think i’d ever find out huh?” he asks, shrugging his shoulder to get her to let go off him. “you don’t have that power over me anymore. you just wanna continue manipulating me, have me at your disposal at all times, make you feel wanted. that’s why you want me to stay.” he starts to get up. “i hope you can get what you wanted from that guy.”

“no, no anton please,” she grips his arm, pulling him toward her as she stands up with him. “what can i do to fix this? tell me.”

he clenches his jaw at the sight of her crying in front of him. she drags her hands down his arm, anton’s eyes following them, until she reaches his hands and grabs them with her own. he watches the way she squeezes them, waiting for him to give her an answer. out of habit, anton finds himself rubbing his thumb against her fingertips, something he would do before bringing them to his lips and placing a kiss. but he doesn’t do that his time. instead, he looks up at her with just his eyes, their height difference still technically making him look down at her. for a second, she thinks he might give her another chance, but when he pulls his hands away and steps back, her stomach twists.

“you can’t.”

“being early is just basic human decency, doesn’t mean anything more than that,” anton responds. sungchan finally finishes (after changing his outfit 2 more times), and they’re finally on their way to your dorm. you decided to let danielle tag along, as long as she kept her promise of not making any interactions between you and anton a big deal to fill her y/nton delusions. you made sure your friends knew that you thinking anton was cute in any way didn’t mean anything. it was an innocent thought, and you would never go for a guy that was already in a relationship, even though this situation is slightly different considering hana might be hiding something. still, even if she wasn’t, you find it difficult to imagine anything serious between you and anton. you were friends, close friends at most. nothing more and nothing less.

anton and sungchan finally showed up, and hanni couldn’t help but giggle at you when you opened the door to the two guys, letting them come in because danielle was still getting ready.

“sorry, she can’t decide on an outfit…” you scratched the back of your neck, wondering if they came earlier on purpose to get to the festival as soon as possible.

“it’s okay, sungchan changed his outfit at least 15 times before we left our dorm,” anton assures you and sungchan rolls his eyes.

“by the way who’s car are we taking? if you want, i don’t mind driving, just so you guys don’t have to,” you tell them, but anton just shakes his head.

“no, no, uh i can drive. it’s pretty far and this was our idea anyway so.. its okay,” he tells you, and you end up agreeing since you’ve never driven that far in korea. when danielle finally finishes getting ready, you say bye to hanni and make your way out the dormitories to where anton’s car was parked. the drive there was slightly awkward. you all knew each other, but you’ve never been grouped together like this. the car ride mainly consisted of you and danielle chatting in the back seat while anton talked quietly with sungchan who was in his passenger seat. anton would look at his rear view mirror every few minutes to sneak a glance at you when he hears you laugh. he was so distracted by his own thoughts that he had to ask sungchan to repeat himself every time he said something.

more and more guilt was taking over anton’s mind. he shouldn’t have been bringing you to a place like this; he should’ve been bringing his hana, his girlfriend. he would have felt less guilty if you all decided on going to a museum or an arcade, anything less intimate than this. but his mind was too blank to come up with anything else, so this festival that sungchan so badly wanted to go to was the quickest he could get to hanging out with you outside of SNU.

when you got there, your excitement increased as sungchan told you about all the fun activities you could do while you’re there and all the pretty set ups that would light up in a few hours. anton found your happiness heartwarming. when he parked, he could see you and danielle fixing yourselves up while him and sungchan got out of the car. he found himself opening the door for you, giggling when you seemed a little shocked. “thank you,” you said and patted the front of his shoulder. he smiled back at you. danielle and sungchan gave each other a quick glance, taking a second glance at each other with wider eyes when they realized they may be thinking the same thing.

“why’d you look at me?” danielle asks.

“no reason, why’d you look at me?” sungchan retorts.

“no reason…” danielle clears her throat. there’s no way she was going to let sungchan in on her delusions about getting you and anton together or the fact that you admitted to finding him cute. and there was no way sungchan was going to expose anton for his ex-crush on you.

bora, rachel, jake, and sunghoon arrived a little while after. the last time this lantern festival came to seoul was their senior year, and hana was there with them too. bora couldn’t help but feel regretful over her argument with hana. it was her fault she wasn’t here with them right now.

intak and hana were there too, and it took hana a few minutes to comfortably settle in due to the fact that the two of them have never gone out together publicly. when she was sure no one else she knew would be there, she allowed herself to hold hands with intak as they walked through the festival.

“i’m thirsty,” danielle says, pulling you towards a food truck. you tell sungchan and anton that you’ll be back. they simply nod, finding some place to stand out of the way of the crowd.

“can you cheer up? you’re bringing my mood down,” sungchan teases anton who was watching you read the menu of the food truck from afar.

“i’m feeling really weird right now,” anton says, passing a hand through his hair and shutting his eyes.

“do you think y/n might have something to do with it?” sungchan asks. anton doesn’t want to answer that question, because he himself doesn’t know.

“i really don’t know.”

“it 100% has to do with y/n. you can deny it all you want but the way you act around her tells me that there are at least sone lingering feelings—“

“but i have hana,” anton says, cutting him off. “and i’m so happy with her.”

“you’re going through all this trouble of trying to get close with y/n like you were back then when you liked her, but you think you’re over her?” sungchan questions with a scoff. if denial was a person, he’s sure it’s anton. “be honest with me. if hana was no longer in the picture, would you still say you were over y/n?”

anton glares around him. “dude, are you seriously asking me that?” sungchan already knows the answer, but he wants anton to say it out loud himself. he knows anton would break things off with hana and pursue you if he had enough courage too, but that’s not who anton was. he wasn’t going to break his girlfriend’s heart to fulfill a love he desired years ago.

but sungchan knew that anton loved hana too. they’ve been together for over a year. so many memories with hana that anton could never let go, especially not at the expense of hurting her. but as much he loved hana, there was no denying how fast his heart would race, how sweaty his palms would get, and how jumbled his words would sound whenever he was around you.

“i think i’m the worst boyfriend in the entire world,” anton tells him. sungchan gives the younger one a supportive rub on the shoulder with a sympathetic smile. although he’s never been put in a position like the one anton is in, he still understands the difficulty of what anton is experiencing right now, and he’s glad anton has become strong enough to finally admit it to himself: he loves hana but isn’t entirely over you.

“took you long enough. for an honors student, you’re pretty stupid. no offense,” sungchan jokes, cutting his own laughter off when the only response he receives from anton is an annoyed glare.

the air became chillier as the night went on. anton had to look away every time he noticed you shiver, because his instinct was to give you his jacket or take your hand in his to warm you up, but how is he supposed to do that when you know he’s with someone else? he can’t even pass it off as friendly or platonic. anyone with a brain would know that’s not the smartest move to play.

you also noticed anton’s change in behavior towards you. he was nervous before, but somehow even more nervous now that sungchan knew directly how he felt about you. danielle caught on too. sungchan wonders what danielle thought about this, especially after that time he was basically interrogated about anton and hana when he went to your guys’ dorm to work on that partner assignment you had. he figured she was just nosy, maybe an overprotective friend that likes to get into other people’s business, but he has a feeling there’s more to it than that. he makes sure to ask her about that later.

rachel holds sunghoon and jake by the arms, dragging them hurriedly through the crowd to be able to receive a lanterns that were soon to be released. bora follows behind them, smiling to herself as she watches and takes a photo. as happy as she was right now, she still missed her best friend. hana and intak had already received their lanterns, his arms wrapped around her waist as they watched the families and friends light their lanterns up together.

thanks to anton and sungchan, the four of you had your lanterns ready as well. anton suddenly couldn’t enjoy himself as much, and hana’s to blame for that. all he could think about was her, and how this would crush her soul if she found out about it. deep down he could feel that they somewhat drifted apart these past few weeks, but he couldn’t assume the worst. he knew hana was just going through a difficult time right now, and questioning her about it or their relationship would just add more fuel to the fire. still, that doesn’t excuse the fact that he was here with another girl, even if your two crazy friends tagged along.

the crowd got quiet when the hosts announced to get your lanterns ready, as well as any personal letters people wrote to attach on their lanterns that would soon be released into the sky. you immediately took your phone out to record. one by one, people slowly let go of their lanterns and watched in awe as they blazed across the sky. everyone except anton.

he was looking at you. even when you caught him he still stared at you, and you furrowed your eyebrows when he didn’t seem to look away. he doesn’t realize the words ‘you’re really pretty’ leave his lips until he watches your dumbfounded reaction. he apologizes quickly before he looks away, making sure dani and sungchan didn’t hear it. confusion took over your features, as well as the warmth that spread across your skin at his compliment. you figure he was just being nice, giving you a friendly compliment because that’s the kind of person he is and always has been, but you can’t help the butterflies forming in your stomach when you glance at him, only to find him looking back at you with slightly pink cheeks.

a little while later, people went out and about throughout the festival. the joyful sound of laughter from friends and families surrounded you, along with the sounds of danielle complaining in your ear about how hungry she was. “dude i told you to eat before they picked us up,” you groaned, giving apologetic eyes to anton and sungchan who probably wanted to play at a game booth or take more photos around the land. well you mainly looked at sungchan. you and anton couldn’t seem to lock eyes since what he said 20 minutes ago, but luckily your two friends haven’t picked up on that.

“no worries, i could go for some food right now too,” sungchan assures you, danielle giving you a look that says ‘i told you so’. the four of you look at the options around you, anton not giving much input due to the embarrassment of calling you pretty. what he said wasn’t embarrassing, but under the circumstances of him being in a relationship, he wish he could just dig a hole to the center of the earth and hide there for the rest of his life.

“i’m good with whatever you guys choose,” is all anton says and he receives 3 nods in response, as you all decide on a kbbq food truck selling nearby. standing in line, sungchan spots a few familiar faces beside the food truck, most likely a group of people who were waiting for the food they ordered to be ready.

“is that rachel and bora?” sungchan questions out loud, catching anton’s ear. he knows they’ll question him about hana once they see she’s not there with him, so he hopes it isn’t them. he really hopes it isn’t them.

“bora! rachel!” sungchan calls out, and anton winces. his girlfriend’s best friend finally notices them, walking over after receiving their food. wow, such perfect timing, anton thought.

“holy shit. didn’t know you guys would be here,” rachel giggles. “we all could’ve came together! carpooling’s always fun, right?”

“next time rachel, for sure,” anton answers awkwardly, hoping there’s a way to end this conversation as quickly as possible.

“is hana with you?” sunghoon asks as if reading his friends’ minds. “we usually come here with her but..” he trails off, not feeling any need to bring up the situation going on with their friend group.

“uh no.. she’s not,” anton replies. “i haven’t been able to talk to her as much recently, i think she just needs some space right now.” oh man he feels terrible. its technically true, hana is in a weird place right now and he figures she just needs some time alone, but as her boyfriend, he should check up on her at least once a day, and he hasn’t had the chance to do that because he’s been too focused on.. well, you and your friendship.

“makes sense,” they all agree, thankfully. the last thing anton needs right now is to be interrogated by hana’s friends. of course he’s protective over her but their protective in the best friend kind of way.

“hana!”

the coincidental calling of her name catches everyone’s attention. sure, her name is pretty common, but the timing of it after the conversation they were having that involved her caused all their ears to perk up.

“thank you.”

yup, anton knows that voice. bora, rachel, sunghoon, and jake do too. so does sungchan. and of course you do as well.

anton’s anxious but excited eyes follow where the voice of his girlfriend is coming from. he turns over his right shoulder, finally pin pointing where she’s standing across the walkway in front of a different food truck. seeing her is a surprise, but definitely a pleasant one. he feels a sense of relief. he wants to go up to her, because he misses her and it’s also a great reminder to himself that he already has a special someone that he loves dearly. rebuilding an old friendship with you can wait (for now).

“oh shit is that her? we should go over!… there..” jake’s voice turns to a whisper at the sight of an unknown male grab hana’s free hand and kissing her forehead.

all eyes shoot from her to anton, to her and back to anton as he furrows his eyebrows in confusion. he bites his lip, his throat going dry and tears threatening to fall down from his eyes but he doesn’t let them. he can’t cry, because it’s possible that what he saw wasn’t what he think it was.

within a few seconds, he comes up with at least a hundred possible explanations for the scene in front of him. maybe hana has a twin. i’m sure that kiss wasn’t romantic. maybe i’m hallucinating right now. yeah, that must be it. she did mention she had a weirdly youthful looking uncle. that probably wasn’t her at all. she wouldn’t hurt me. hana wouldn’t do that to me. this will all go away after a blink. anton, just close your eyes. okay, 3… 2… 1…

she’s still there, giving major heart eyes as she eats and chats with.. whoever the hell this dude is. anton was too lost in his own thoughts to notice bora walk away and towards hana. he wants to move, he wants to get out of there as quickly as possibly but the discomfort flooding through his entire body causes him to freeze in place. he’s so embarrassed that his friends are witnesses to him being cheated on by a girl he’s moved mountains for. so embarrassed at how openly in love he’s been with her just to see her with another man.

you and dani share a look. normally this is where she would laugh in your face and say “i told you so!”, but right now all she could do is hide behind you and whisper for you to do something to save anton from this painful moment.

bora’s yelling in her face, loud enough for you guys to barely understand her and catching the attention of a view passerby as well. “who the fuck is this? is this why you’ve been sneaking around huh? hiding things from your best friends? lying to your boyfriend?”

shit. hana forgot about anton.

anton never tagged along whenever her and her friends would come to this festival, but the mere chance of him happening to be here this time scared her. hana looked around, not even paying attention to the rest of the words bora was yelling at her. she searched the crowd, hoping she wouldn’t come across anton’s face, but when she did, her stomach twisted in guilt. he built his lip awkwardly, gulping as his bottom lip quivered slightly. and for some reason, the sight of you whispering to anton that you should get going made hana angry.

hana looked away and to the floor, completely tuning out the argument going on between bora and intak, who wasn’t full on yelling back but was trying to defend hana in any way he could. “what a shitty person you became,” is the last thing bora says to hana before leaving her and rejoining you guys. sungchan had already dragged anton away, you and dani following close behind while sunghoon, jake, and rachel stood there staring at hana. she felt her stomach dropped repeatedly. bora’s eyes watered, jake quickly noticing as he held out his hand for her to take which she did, walking away. rachel pouted at hana before being pulled away by sunghoon.

“we’ll go home.. okay?” intak comforts hana. all she can do is nod.
