The [New Yorker asks](http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2012/11/will-sandy-turn-new-yorkers-into-bike-commuters.html) if Sandy will make more bike commuters. Why Not?

A Moment of Sorts
In post-storm New York, the bike is having [a moment of sorts](http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/02/nyregion/with-transportation-snarled-in-brooklyn-bicycles-roam-free.html?smid=go-share&_r=0). Photo: Benjamin Norman for The New York Times.
Utility of The Bike
*Riding in Japan* Interesting how presence changes perspective. After the Tsunami, the Japanese rode bikes and continue to do so in a mini bike boom. Post Sandy, NYC is discovering the utility of the bike and that's what we're posting about here. Local bike advocates are responding with #bikesandy events, [commuter stations](http://bikenyc.org/event/3772), [free rental bikes](https://www.doliquid.com/free-sandy-bike-rental), and [blinkies](http://www.bicycleretailer.com/north-america/2012/11/01/industry-pitches-encourage-nyc-commuting?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed#.UJKnj4afPuV). *Rapid Response by Bike in Fukushima* Photos by [Robin Low](http://www.flickr.com/photos/robinlow/5551382569/) and [Japanese Red Cross Society](http://www.flickr.com/photos/ifrc/5542580700/).

The Epoch Times [ran this photo](http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/united-states/hurricane-sandy-live-updates-new-york-city-308115.html) of community power generation with a tandem bike after Sandy and many bike commuters are likely wondering how they can power their own devices with a bike. You do so while riding with a dynamo hub or a stationary trainer like [this one from Field Studies](http://www.fieldstudies.org/visiting-professor-pedals-small-act-of-sustainability-at-sfs-costa-rica_1631) that was seen on the Climate Ride. At Bike Hugger we travel with [Biologic's Reecharge system](http://bikehugger.com/post/view/biologic-reecharge-case-for-iphone-and-dynamo-hub). The [hub charges a battery](http://www.thinkbiologic.com/products/joule-3-dynamo-hub) that powers your phone, as described in this video.
We've ridden on tour and vacation with the Reecharge system and will do so again this Winter, in Maui. Would also lend our legs to a community charge station and share our off-the-grid, pedal power. Find [dynamos online](http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=dynamo%20hub&linkCode=ur2&tag=texturadesign-20&url=search-alias%3Dap) or at your local bike shop. Expect to spend a couple hundred dollars on the hub and converter.
The bike industry in New York and nationally is pitching in to help commuters use bikes in post-Sandy New York City this week.

WSJ blogs how bikes are getting ridden again in NYC after Hurricane Sandy. βI havenβt used this in like a year,β said 29-year-old Jeffrey Johnson, who works at an Internet marketing company in Manhattan. He brought his bike into Atlantic Bicycles Thursday to have a new lock put on. βBut I had no choice.β
Many frequent bike commuters said that, with sparse traffic in downtown Manhattan, conditions were ideal to bike.

_In the midst of congested transit left in Super Storm Sandyβs wake, more New Yorkers are opting to ride bicycles._
Post Sandy, expect many NYC cyclists are thinking of ways to help more people with bikes and this is one of them. The bicycling Info Ladies of Bangladesh bring the Internet to villages by bike.

_Don't drive, ride a bike. Commuters are filling bike lanes in greater numbers than usual this morning. Staring out the window of an idling car, I wished I were one of them. The sun is shining and the streets are full of optimism_

While searching for the obligatory man riding his bike through a flooded street shot, Google returned this....and we were like, well that's pretty good [stock photography Google](http://www.123rf.com/photo_14377665_the-girl-with-the-bike-for-a-walk-in-the-woods-on-a-sandy-road.html), but not quite. It is a bike on a sandy road at least. Then the ladies of [Hugga HQ](http://bikehugger.com) thought maybe the Hurricane blew her top off?
