Did you know Jackson Hole is home to a 25,000-acre National Elk Refuge, where up to 10,000 wintering elk make their grounds? The refuge was established in 1912 to ensure the survival of the herd after a combination of human development and severe winters took their toll. It now provides a non-enclosed sanctuary for the largest elk herd on Earth. And Jackson Hole is now known as the 'American Serengeti.'
