this foreshadowing is HORRIFYING and UNACCEPTABLE

interesting to speculate over though...

free! is about friendship and not that dark, so Haru’s going to choose his friends over swimming (but still win probably, because they are his strength, not his weakness) and nobody’s going to die (knock on wood)

most likely candidates for harm will be Makoto and Rin, since they are closest to haru

Rin fits the parallel best, especially considering the implication that Toraichi was the old friend of Ryuuji’s

however, Sousuke is coming back in 2020 and not letting him and Rin get their swimming reunion is way too mean, wtf

and Rin had an angsty first season

Makoto hasn’t had as much angst so far and he’s Haru’s oldest and closest friend

he isn’t a rival, like we’re assuming Ryuuji’s friend was, but he is a friend who is no longer competing, which also parallels closely

Ikuya is also a possibility, but unlikely because he’s had a hell of a season, and is seemingly being set up as a side character in the future, while Makoto and Rin are being brought to the forefront again

...then again, Kyoani’s already gone with a one-two punch of Ikuya-angst with High Speed! and Dive to the Future!

also Ikuya is vulnerable to incidents in the water, which are less likely to happen to either Makoto or Rin because they can breathe underwater

this might set Ryuuji up as an antagonist next season

however, his reaction to Haru skipping training to watch the nationals suggests he may in fact approve of Haru’s friendships

counterpoint: Ryuuji may be harsher because Haru failed to qualify for the 200m freestyle

counterpoint counterpoint: Ryuuji doesn’t blame friendships or anything after the race, instead telling Mikhail Haru hesitated because he was scared to reach his own limits and also Haru probably qualified for the 100m freestyle

or the antagonists could be Albert or Kinjou, since they must have given something up, according to Ryuuji, so they may apply more pressure onto Haru
