Lily is one of the most interesting and compelling characters in the whole game because her existance is simultaneously tragic and cathartic.
Ms Gracie having her identity slowly stripped away from her the way she took the identities from countless children, by her own voice no less, is undoubtedly a deserved punishment, however the result of that punishment is that Gracie no longer exists, instead there is Lily.
Lily and Ms Gracie are the same person in body parts alone, they share the same physical brain but not the same mind, Gracie has been gone for a long time. This makes Lily a walking moral dilemma, she is essentially a child, born 9 years ago with no memory of her previous life. It raises a lot of questions, is it fair to punish someone for a crime they don’t know they’ve committed? At what point does someone become a different person, and can you really hold them accountable for the actions of someone else?
She doesn’t know why everyone hates her, she doesn’t know why she’s unloved despite how much she tries to be everyone’s friend. When she lashes out it’s not malicious, it’s a cry for attention, a tantrum. She’s a child desperately trying to make the world follow the rules she believes everyone must follow, including her. But it doesn’t matter how well she follows those rules, or makes everyone else follow them, it’s never enough, she’s still punished for reasons she doesn’t understand and that no one will explain to her.
She’s jealous of Poppy like a sibling, she follows Gracies rules like a child obeying their mother, she has become the orphan, and the former orphans have become her tormentors. The role reversal is what makes it such a moral dilemma, because at this point is she really any different from the children she hurt?
