âThe Ballad of Sexual Dependencyâ was the seminal photography collection of the eighties, capturing the eraâs lawless bohemianism.
In the week of mourning that followed, I was seduced by an older man. During this period of greatest pain and loss, I was simultaneously awakened to intense sexual excitement. In spite of the guilt I suffered, I was obsessed by my desire.
He burned my journals, and the sick thing was that there were people around who knew us and who wouldnât help me. He wrote âJewish-American Princessâ in lipstick on the mirror.â
Elle PeĚrez speaks with Marvin Heiferman about the making of an iconic photobook.
Romance is not a bad word to use. Thatâs certainly part of the allure of The Ballad.
They were fucked-up prints, with weird and oversaturated color, kind of messy prints, and some were signed âNancy Goldinâ in tiny, tiny handwriting. I looked at them, and I thought they were fantastic. I could tell what she was doing right off the bat, knew nobody else was doing anything like it, and I said, âBring some more stuff back.â
If you wanted to make friction or make a break, you had to figure out how to do it yourself.
That was the challengeâto get rid of the extraneous stuff, keep the pictures we couldnât live without, and then keep cutting from there.
She writes, âI donât ever want to lose the real memory of anyone again.â
Itâs less of a conversation and more a feeling. We just try things and if it doesnât open up on its own, we donât try to force it.
I think it really did develop out of necessity, because songwriting has been such an important outlet for me. If I couldnât write in front of them, Iâm not sure how much I would write at all, because Iâm always with them.
I need to feel connected to something bigger. That kind of connects to what we were talking about with the wilderness and feeling like a small part of something big.
The Big Thief frontwoman talks love, loss, fear, birth, death, and everything in between.

Sufjan Stevens's 2005 Illinoise was a dizzying masterpiece. So why is his most recent album so wilfully disorienting? He talks to Tim Lewis
"I'm pretty involved in everything I do," he admits, "which isn't always efficient and doesn't necessarily make for the more successful product. But I do feel that, in that sense, everything I do has a comprehensiveness to it."
I just have the privilege of celebrating my music and sharing it," he says stiffly. "I don't really want to get caught up in that self-doubt any more. I've always been really insecure about what I do, but those existential conundrums are really circuitous and â what's the word? â unproductive. You know, I don't think my music is important, I don't think it's changing the world, I don't think it's art. I just think it's music. It is what it is."
"It's very hormonal, a lot of this stuff feels like a second puberty," he continues. "It's way more self-obsessed and leans towards masochism and solipsism and paranoia and anxiety. I'm a very self-conscious person, I think we all are, but I'm especially not very comfortable in my body. I always feel really weird and awkward on the street or on the stage. It has nothing to do with circumstances, it's just an ongoing psychological state, like white noise."

Identity and the concept of a âtrophy wifeâ have always been interesting to me, and Priscilla let me explore those in a new setting.

Illustrations: Š Alexandra Levasseur, 2022 From the time she was a young child, Sylvia Plath wanted to write. Her first poem was published w
Throughout this time Plath aspired to write a novel, but the form eluded her until she was nearly thirty. Plath wrote The Bell Jar in the spring and summer of 1961 when she was living in London with her husband...
The Bell Jar tells the story of a young womanâs breakdown and recovery, but it is also a devastating critique of a paternalistic psychiatric system that regarded ambition in women as neurotic.
The retro-romanticism of Air's Moog-heavy electronica proved an inspiration for Sofia Coppola's debut feature.
