Vida had her MRI today at Kansas State University because they rearranged their schedule to get her MRI done today instead of the consult today and the MRI tomorrow to reduce her stress since she doesn't like the vet. Unfortunately, it was not good news. Vida has a 12mm x 14.3mm x 13.3mm meningioma (cancerous tumor) on her olfactory nerve pressing into her brain. The vet said it is a very slow growing type of cancer and that it wouldn't likely grow large enough to kill her before old age does, and the only thing it causes is seizures which can usually be controlled with medication, so we can treat the symptoms and ignore it, or I can talk to CSU about doing radiation or surgery. He said the big downside of the type of radiation that she'd need is that it can cause death and damage of healthy brain tissue, which can cause rapid neurological degeneration, so he doesn't necessarily think it's the best call, but since he's not an oncologist he can't make that recommendation and I need to talk to CSU. You probably already know this (and I know this is a joke post), but the touching may be direct absorption into the vomeronasal organ!

The vomeronasal organ is probably why a dog’s nose is wet. Most animals with vomeronasal organs have wet noses, too. It is difficult for an airborne odor to land squarely on the vomeronasal organ, since it is situated in a safe, dark interior recess of the face. A hearty sniff not only brings molecules into the dog’s nasal cavity; little molecular bits also stick onto the moist exterior tissue of the nose. Once there, they can dissolve and travel to the vomeronasal organ through interior ducts. When your dog nuzzles against you, he is actually collecting your odor on his nose: better to confirm that you’re you. In this way, dogs double their methods of smelling the world.

We have a lot to celebrate this weekend!

Figaro added new titles to both ends of his name. On Friday he took Winners Dog and BOW for 3 points and his second major, Saturday he took RWD and passed both legs of his AKC Temperament Test needed for his title, and today Fig got the last three points he needed (and another major) to become an AKC Champion! He also passed his CGCA and handled himself well over a long weekend of hanging out while I was testing at the show.
