i keep seeing people comment likeĀ āeveryone starts somewhereā and im here to tell ya somethin, iām a self taught makeup artist i started at sephora when i was 18 years old and worked my way up since then iāve worked with 3 different companies in various areas in the makeup industry from freelancing to events teams to brand repping to training and education to standing at a counter for 9 hours hustling to make numbers, iāve done a lot, i have experience iāve been trained to the point where i can and will call myself a makeup artist because iāve been trained and taken under the wing of some great people who didnāt want me to make a fool of myself, people who didnāt want me to let a person leave my makeup chair feeling worse off, people including clients whoāve taught me how work with their skin and tips on how they personally do their eye makeup.Ā
you guys who keep sayingĀ āeveryone is an artist! everyone starts somewhereā dont know shit, honestly, i work with people to this day who REFUSE to learn how to do makeup on people with monolids and/or how to do makeup on people with deeper skin tones. they donāt know how some shades of eyeshadow will turn gray on certain skin tones they donāt know aĀ ānudeā lipstick is different for everyone, they donāt know that a smokey eye on a person with monolids looks different than someone with hooded eyes and then they have the nerve to get MAD when someone requests someone who looks like them do do their makeup! theseĀ āartistsā act like the client is saying that they canāt do their job when they PROBABLY CANāT iāve been in the business 5 years and i would never claim that i can do a black girls makeup better than a black girl can because it goes beyond that 5 second interaction it goes beyond me wanting to prove myself or whatever, it has to do with distrust and people who arenāt white have the right to distrust me and the industry as a whole because the whole damn industry has failed them. Ā itās bigger than thisĀ āeveryone is an artistā bullshit, the industry itself does not cater to people who arenāt white, it doesnāt, itās a fact donāt try to tell meĀ āsome brandsā are moreĀ āinclusiveā and have a bigger āshade rangeā because iāve seen people of at least 20 different skin tones get matched to NC 45 and sent on their day.Ā
everyone starts somewhere of course, i started doing makeup on myself and family members, people that look like me, thatās how i got into makeup and how i started to take it more seriously but it doesnāt just stop there, i had to be WILLING to learn once i got a job in the industry i have to be willing to take criticism and turn it around even 5 years into it, the same as every fucking industryā¦Ā if i was a chef at an italian restaurant and i didnāt know how to boil pasta and i served your meal to you raw as shit would you be likeĀ āyea well at least u tried every1 is a chefā NO ! you would expect me to do my job to the best of my ability and if i couldnāt learn how or if i refused to learn how i shouldnāt call myself what iām not and you shouldnāt fucking encourage it.Ā
