City life often demands quick getaways, a trend seen across India. Whenever a holiday coincides with a weekend, cities tend to empty out as people set off on drives or rides to nearby destinations. I’m no exception. For such rides, you need a motorcycle that’s equally at home in the city and capable of handling tougher terrain. For me, the Scram 440 was the ideal motorcycle that could do both.

In three months, my Scram 440 has seen it all — from everyday city rides to rugged paths in the hilly regions, it has done a 1000-km ride and is looking forward to many thousands. 

First Impressions and Design

The first thing that strikes you about the Scram 440 is how familiar yet new it feels. The silhouette clearly draws from the Scram 411 and Himalayan lineage, but the refinement is on another level with tighter lines, the stance more composed, and the overall form cleaner. The fuel tank, proudly wearing the bold "440" graphics, adds a splash of modern attitude to its rugged soul.

I chose the Force variant with alloy wheels and tubeless tyres. It is a small but significant choice that makes a big difference. It is the kind of detail that saves you trouble on a long ride, as a puncture no longer means being stranded. The ergonomics feel just right too, with an upright posture, wide handlebars, and a stance that keeps you relaxed for hours. 

Engine and Performance

The real story begins when you thumb the starter. The new 443cc engine is everything Royal Enfield promised: smooth, calm, and surprisingly refined. There is a sense of quiet confidence in the way it pulls. The vibrations that were once part of the brand’s "character" are almost gone, replaced by a deep, measured thrum that feels modern without losing personality. Torque comes in early, making it ideal for crawling through city traffic or climbing up a steep section without drama.

That sixth gear is a gift. On open highways, it transforms the Scram 440 into a genuinely capable tourer. Cruising at 90 or 100 km/h feels effortless, the engine barely breaking a sweat. Push it harder, and it still has some reserve left for quick overtakes, but the motorcycle seems happiest when you let it breathe at moderate speeds. That is when it shows its true nature: calm, composed, and unhurried. You can tell this machine is not trying to impress you with numbers; it is trying to win you over with feel.

Ride and Handling

Over rough roads, the Scram 440 feels planted and forgiving. The long-travel suspension glides over potholes, gravel, and broken tarmac with ease. At nearly 200 kilos, it is not a light motorcycle, but that weight works in its favor. The heft gives it a reassuring stability, and you feel like the motorcycle is doing half the work for you. Whether I am cutting through traffic or standing up on the pegs on a dusty trail, it always feels grounded and predictable.

Braking performance is solid for everyday use. The front has a good bite, while the rear steps in gently with ABS. I particularly like the option to switch off the rear ABS when riding off-road, a small touch that makes a big difference for riders who like to explore trails. The 15-litre tank gives enough range for weekend getaways, and the small conveniences — USB charging port, hazard light switch, and side-stand cut-off — make it clear that Royal Enfield has been listening to real-world riders.

Everyday Comfort and Practicality

After 1000 kilometres, what stands out to me most is how easygoing the Scram 440 feels. It is not a motorcycle that pushes you to ride fast or prove a point. Instead, it invites you to take the long route home, to stop by a tea stall in the hills, to ride without a destination. It is that rare kind of motorcycle that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the journey, a trait many modern machines seem to have forgotten.

Sure, it is not perfect. The seat could use a redesign, the LED headlamp does not light up the road as confidently as it should, and a slipper clutch would have made downshifts smoother. But those are small trade-offs for what it offers: a buttery-smooth engine, a planted ride, and a personality that is distinctly Royal Enfield.

Verdict: Built for the Everyday Explorer

After my first thousand kilometres, I have realised this is not a motorcycle that grows on you, one ride at a time. Every kilometre adds to its story.
