This press release from AVIS Rental Car details their implementation of RFID in their “Avid On Location” program to make the rental process more efficient for some of their corporate clients.

In modern times we talk heavily about RFID technology in sports, specifically in the NFL. Why? perhaps because it is the most interesting application in recent memory. However, there are much more impactful uses of RFID technology that are not at the forefront of people’s minds when they think of RFID.  For example. RFID is used in SCM (Supply Chain Management). Procter and Gamble utilize this technology to “reduce shipping errors and cut labor costs.” Additional business applications of RFID are provided in this article from “RFID Journal”.

Is the RFID technology for the fans or the coaches & athletes?  Zebra Technologies CEO, Anders Gustafsson, states that the technology implementation is “about helping the fans, it is all about the fan experience.” He makes it clear that the fan is first and foremost when it comes to the delivering of benefits from RFID in the NFL. The coaches and organizations will be set to reap smaller side benefits from the technology.

We have seen the implementation of RFID technology in sport through the NFL’s major integration of the technology, but let us take a look at a project that is a little closer to home. SportRFID is a company that works with Sportchek and Snowboard Canada to set up RFID triggered camera’s around board circuits to improve the sport for spectators, coaches and athletes.
