There were times when Adam had to deal with people other than Derek and the household staff, and if anyone threatened or hurt him, he felt an especially acute need for Derek. And whenever Derek came down from one of his fits of jealous rage, he would take a nasty sort of pleasure in seeing Adam crawl back to him like a beaten but loyal dog. Yet despite his wrecked psyche, Adam held on to many of his own quirks and interests, which amused Derek. So, in a way, Derek had grown attached to Adam, too. Derek doesn't want to (or perhaps simply can't) tell Adam that he actually matters to him, and at any opportunity, he likes to remind him that Adam is nothing but a resource, and an easily replaceable one at that, even though they both know that isn't true.
