Excuses for Extraordinary Behavior

Billie shook her head, hands palm up in surrender already. 

“YOU” she emphasized, poking at Jason’s chest with an index finger as she spoke “are the one that agreed to watch this demon cat.” 

Billie only rolled her eyes through his insistence that the cat wasn’t a demon, not wanting to get into the how-do-you-think-he’s-lived-this-long argument. Again. 

“I told you, when Britt goes poking around for a Tubs sitter we are very busy. It’s in the married to me handbook.” She gave a nod, watching the familiar recognition to this defense flicker across his face and beat him to the punch. “Yes, along with I always get half of your burrito and every third Friday is animated movie binge night.” 

Jason’s shoulders slumped, defeat beginning to set in. 

“You’re saying you wouldn’t come help if I’m screaming?”

The pout was almost working, but Billie had plenty of practice against that particular method and held her ground. She leaned in, wrapped her arms around Jason’s shoulders and gave him two tight squeezes. 

“I’m saying, I love you but when it comes to bathing supposed ex-crime lord senior citizen Tubbington, you’re on your own.”

“DEMO  DAY!”

It was Kara’s favorite day. There was something about the destruction of something old to make way for something new that inspired her. There was also something about their process. Sure she understood shiplap and back-splash, but the way that James imagined these home designs to life was far beyond amazing. Knowing the endgame only further motivated her to get her job done as quickly as possible. Not to mention, it was a lot of fun.

When they moved out of National City in pursuit of a quieter life in Waco, Texas, Kara didn’t know what was in store for her. Sure she would fly home occasionally to check in on her sister and aid the D.E.O. on cases they needed help with, but she was scared that it wouldn’t be enough, not that James would ever not be enough. She was just convinced that the only good she could contribute to the world was as Supergirl. Who knew giving people the home of their dreams could be just as fulfilling? Well, not quite, but it was definitely a very close second. 

Kara had already taken out all the unnecessary fixtures, knocked down all the right walls, and put beams under the low-bearing walls and it wasn’t even lunch time yet. The only reason she knew it was lunchtime already was because she heard James’ truck pull up in the driveway, which only meant one thing.

Ham sandwiches!

She raced down the stairs and reached the front door before James was even out of the truck. There were a few things that made her smile from ear to ear and two of those things just happened to be at the doorstep. Taking the brown paper bag out of James’ hand, she pulled him into the construction site and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “Man after my own heart.” Excitedly, she pulled her sandwich out of the bag and wasted no time devouring the carefully made meal.

“Is that my shirt?”

Kara looked down at the plaid shirt that wrapped her body and offered James a sheepish smile as she adjusted her glasses. She didn’t mean to grab his shirt while getting ready that morning, but when she did, it smelled too good and felt too soft to put it back. Besides, it fit her job description a lot better than the denim cover up she originally planned on wearing. “Maybe.” 

She spun around as if she was a model trying to show off the newest trends. “You gotta admit, I look a lot better in this shirt than you do,” she joked before taking another bite of the sandwich. “You might as well just let me keep it.” He shook his head, but she knew she was off the hook as soon as that smile formed on his lips.

Three words that were always reserved for Jason. There have been other good boys, ones who bent to the will and command of both Quinn and Jason’s flawless dominance. But none of them were her’s. None of them deserved the title, none more than the good boy who’d been by her side for the past 10 years.

It was hard to pick a true anniversary date. There was the day they first had sex, a day that started with Quinn checking on him after a Switch-wide punishment. There were so many punishments back then and Quinn wasn’t sure what she would have done if she didn’t have him on her side through all of them. There was the first time she called him hers. Her good boy. The same words engraved on the dog tags he still wore around his neck today. A reminder that no matter what, nobody could ever take that away from them. There was the first time she dominated him. Put him down on his knees and truly dominated him. Graduation was just around the corner for them and they knew things were never going to be the same after that. 

It was impossible to choose, so they decided on the day they started their lives together. The day they became the perfect team. Quinn got her first job as an attorney at a D.C. law firm and Jason transferred from the LAPD to the Metropolitan PD. It wasn’t a smooth transition in the least, but for Quinn, Jason stuck it out. His first day in D.C. he was on his own, and on the subway nonetheless because his car hadn’t shipped from California just yet. The first three nights, he had dinner alone because Quinn’s new job, took all of her time and energy. But she didn’t realize exactly how selfish she was being until she came home to find Jason kneeling right at the front door. 

“My good boy.”

He spent that night tied to a chair with wax dripping down his naked body. And Quinn spent that night promising him that she would never make him feel that alone again. That became their anniversary date and every year, Quinn would come home to find him kneeling at the front door.  

Quinn never understood Russell when he claimed that he was protecting her and her mother by lying to them. The less you know, the better, was what he always said, but she never thought that it was a valid excuse. She always believed that you should be honest with the people you care about, no matter how hard the truth might be to hear. But those were the thoughts of a little girl and for the first time in her life, she agreed with her father. 

Things were always dangerous and each time Quinn went out of her way or made an excuse to see Mike, she knew she was making it just a little bit worse each time. If someone caught them during one of their late night drinking sessions or private dancing time in the studio, she knew it would have resulted in a few bruises and the unemployment line for the bartender. But she never tasted happiness like she did when she was with Mike and she believed a few bruises would have been worth the risk. 

As time went on, just being in his presence wasn’t enough and she found herself in his arms at the mercy of a chaste kiss. One that would completely tear her world apart. Before she realized just how deep she was, it was too late to turn the other way. Quinn had never been in love before so it was hard to read the warning signs. Before she could stop herself, she was waking up next to him, the sun pouring into his tiny Chicago apartment and by that time there was nothing she could do to keep him safe. Nothing except convince him to leave the city for good. 

“It’s just not going to work out between us. I’m engaged - to a man I love and I can’t have you here ruining the life I’m trying to build for myself.” The words tasted like vile coming out of her mouth. She had to convince him that she didn’t love him. That she was just suffering from a lapse in judgement and that she wanted nothing else to do with him. 

It was a lie. 

A lie to keep him safe because she knew that if he ever got hold of the truth, he would fight for her. Mike would try to save her and get himself killed in the process. So, yes, she was lying. But it was for his own good. 

“I want you gone, Mike. Leave the bar and never come back. And do yourself a favor and go see your mom. I know she misses you.” 

Quinn managed to keep a straight face until she reached his apartment building’s elevator. This was her cross to bear and he didn’t need to suffer along with her. The life she wanted with him would never be and he deserved better. Mike deserved everything she couldn’t give him.
