UWE Work

Non- Diagetic- The sound you add to the film to enhance the experience and make it more powerful. 

Work in pairs to create a short multimedia piece between 1-3 minutes long, using a range of filming and audio techniques. 

A small clip of the water running, that can be used between footage to add bulk or help the transition. 

This is a small video from Frenchay's Red zone. It is documenting a part of nightlife in Bristol- particularly for students. I tried to do panning without a tripod, so it is slightly shaky. Also the lighting is quite dark, so if I were re-shooting I would consider using an external flash gun. 

After deciding that I liked this location, looking over the bridge I got some footage, it was by sheer luck that an ambulance drove over the bridge while   I was filming and because of that I decided to keep it. There is a bit of shaking at the end from where I went to turn it off, and the sound also needs editing as it has my voice in it. I like the composition overall, and also how the water reflects the surrounding views.

Waterfront/docks/harbourside: There is a risk of slipping/ falling into the water, or dropping equipement into the water so we must be careful to keep a tight hold on the equipment and walk carefully. Depending on the time of day will affect how busy it is, however, we are planning to get footage in the morning so there is minimal risk from the pubic. As we are planning to get photos of the water more so than of people we wont have to ask for consent to take or use the images. As it is a well lit and populated area with lots of businesses running it is unlikely for a high risk of theft, although it is always worth being cautious. Town centre/ high street locations: The main risk here is from either being in the way of people shopping, or for people to not notice our equipment and knock it over. Therefore we will need to keep a hold of it while getting footage here. During the day there is lots of people around and cctv working so the risk of theft is quite low. As the footage here will have lots of people in it, we will have to be careful not to film anyone if they express a complaint,but otherwise as we are not focusing on anyone in particular, and it is in a public place we do not need to ask for consent. Frenchay nightclub: This is the most problematic of all the locations as it is in a dark/ confined area with lots of drunk students. To ensure the safety of ourselves and the equipment we have to keep at a distance and keep an eye on everything. Also as it is technically private property and a private function we need to ask for permission to take photos and film there beforehand. Oktoberfest: As I was photographing this event regardless I decided to use to opportunity to get footage for our film as well. Having already gained permission, and seen that the event was quite quiet the risks were low. Although it would have been a similar scenario to the nightclub if it was very busy.

Once we have got our footage we will make sure it is edited to flow within the sequence of 24 hours so that it appears to look like one continuous day.

Still images work to fill the gaps between film, and can be used to tell a story, such as in La Jetee, however if the entire film is still images, it can make it quite boring. If there is no set purpose to the images it an make the film seem disorganised with no consistency. Still images are, however, very good at showing the artistic side, and can be very interesting if taken well. We are chosing to mix still images amongst the moving image througout the film to give it a varied balance.

Panning is where you film and move the camera to either the left or right  to show more of the scene. It has to be done slowly otherwise it can be too hard to see what is happning, and needs to be done on a tripod with a steady hand. Out of all the techniques we are including this one I believe is the most tricky. This method is useful when trying to capture a wide view, or if the subjects are moving around alot, it is also more visually appealling than a single view.

This is straight forward, camera on tripod in a fixed position filming a set scene just as you would take a photograph of it. It is good for focusing on specific things, such as a person talking for an interview, or just watching something move across the frame. It is good to have this sort of film for filling the gaps between two scenes or for providing background information. To make it more visually interesting zooming in and out could be added. It is not a good method to use for a long persiod of time unless other footage or images are inserted between it to break it up. This method is often closely related to the audio, for example if the audio was of someone talking about a cup of tea, the film could then just be of a cup of tea someone is holding etc.

It has very atmospheric music to keep your interest, while the images are of the general publics daily lives. While we are chosing to have some hyperlapse in our film we do not want to make it the main type as it is time consuming and has already been used for many of the similar Bristol videos.

After doing some background research into the styles of film possible, and the works of well known photographer's, we have come up with some initial ideas on which we can test out and expand upon. A day in the life of Bristol This is our first, and favourite idea which is to get a series of images and film varying in the time of day. This would then be edited together to make a film which appears to be 24 hours of Bristol, starting and ending at 7am. Working life A documentory style film focusing on a few people's working lives in Bristol City. We would include interviews of the selected people, with a few filler clips of the place they work and surroundings, with the speach over the top. Bristol timelapse A more artistic take on the city with no linea timeframe,  just various views in Bristol made into a timelapse. We would have non-diagetic sound playing over the top, and the film would focus entirely on the artistic photography and asthetics rather than the subject content.

Gilian's work focuses in a more direct way on people's lives  than Gregory's for example, in the way they are both portraying an aspect of the people involved but Gilian's is verbally spoken straight from them rather than through the interpretation of the photographer. I like how thought provocative her work is, and it is a stye of photography I can relate to, and would work with.

A photographer, who stages locations in order to make them look like a movie set, while also reflecting the normality of the lives of those living there. By heavily using semiotics to narrate his images, he makes you think about what the images are implying. While his still images are not a film, many people have been inspired by him to make soundtracks that fit in with the scene thus making it a multimedia piece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMeK9jWXA6Y Due to the theatrical nature of his images it is easy to see how they could be turned into a short film. In relation to my ideas, while I find his work visually pleasing and interesting, I would prefer to capture the world without staging it and therefore chose not to mimic his style for this particular project. Furthermore, setting up a scene for a series like this takes a lot of time, which I do not currently have.
