Retrosong '86

The winner of the 1986 International Grand Prix of Popular Song is Norway, with the song “Take On Me” by A-Ha, having received 93 points from across the world.

The United Kingdom’s Bonnie Tyler with Holding Out For A Hero narrowly came 2nd with 92 points. West Germany’s Nena with 99 Luftballons came 3rd with 87 points.

It has been an honour to host the first annual Retrosong! In the coming months, watch out for a survey to determine the time period that the next one will be held in!

A very narrow victory, but still a victory nonetheless!

Now we go to the first of the two countries tied for first place in Phase I — the United Kingdom. They need 51 points to surpass West Germany and take over the lead.

This puts them in the lead with 92 points!

Now we move on to the 3rd place finisher of the Phase I results, Italy. They received...

...35 points! This puts them comfortably at 5th place so far.

Before we move on to the top 3 finishers of Phase I, we must go through West Germany first. And it seems they have received...

...75 points!

They surpass the United States and take the lead with 87 points!

West Germany's points can be broken down to 10 from Spain and the Soviet Union, 8 from the United Kingdom, Austria, the United States, and Japan, 7 from Italy, 6 from Poland, 5 from Sweden, 3 from Denmark, and 1 from Yugoslavia and Norway. With the 12 points from France, that means they’ve received votes from every delegation!

Moving on to Denmark now, and it appears they received 31 points! This brings their total up to 43.

This can be broken down to 8 points from Sweden, 5 points from Spain and the Soviet Union, 3 points from the United Kingdom, France, Japan, and Norway, and 1 point from West Germany.

Let’s talk about France! They received 64 votes, bringing it up to a total of 76 points! Ah, so close to beating the United States!

Phase I: 5/14 initially listed France giving them both 8 and 7 points. In fact, Denmark gave 7 points. This has been corrected.

We are now halfway through Phase II!

Next is Austria, which only received 29 points and currently puts them at third place.

The lovely Novi Fosili from Yugoslavia have received 36 points. Yes, it’s less than Japan, but we never said this was in ascending order in terms of points.

Now we find out how many points Japan has received. And in fact, they have been given a whooping 63 points!

As for the Soviet Union, they received 41 points, just 1 more than Spain did.

We’ll now find out how well Spain did. They have received 40 points!

Next up, we can now reveal that Sweden has received a grand total of 33 points!

As determined, the first country we’ll reveal is Poland. We can reveal that they have received 19 points!
