Lucky Charms. Oh how much I longed for them, I longed for them to take me over the rainbow, to find my own pot of gold. To meet all the leprechauns I tried to trap with all the gear my dad & I bought at RadioShack. Oh it was my dream. To taste those shimmery little marshmallows in the clouds, to prance through the swirling fields of Ireland in my own mouth. I was enchanted. Commercial after commercial, I sat & I watched. I watched as every color filled the taste buds of my eye. Maybe after all, I’d finally meet my childhood hero, the King of Ireland, Bono. If only I could get my hands on a bubbling box of Lucky Charms. I was forbidden. No sugary cereals for a growing girl like me. None, just cornflakes & Crispix. Raisin Bran. The time had finally come when I was all of 14 years old. I was in marching band, about to head out to a competition via bus. This time however, we were granted the gift of buddy bags. We were asked to write down a list of our favorite snacks & have an anonymous buddy to out & buy them with their parents. As you can imagine, I believe I wrote Lucky Charms down about 5 times. The days dawned & there she was. My very first buddy bag, & inside, two bright & shimmering boxes of Lucky Charms. I was a lucky girl. I held one box up to the sky. Pinching the corners in the air as I watched the dawn of the new horizon. I opened the seal & listened as the crunch of paper sweetened my eardrums. Inside, a new land, a broadening beginning as I heard the jungle from the Lucky Charms commercial dance freely in the air. No one know how important this day was for me as I stuffed my face full of two boxes of Lucky Charms at the back of the bus. I got sick but I had won.
