finally did that charactour thing and these two were right next to each other i’m losing it

       right place, right time. peter had been walking behind her, staring at the floor. his eyes caught the sight of her feet slipping before anything else, and he moved himself forward to catch her in the crook of his arm. in an impressive display, his other hand reaches out for her project and catches it mid-air before it can hit the wet floor. he struggles for just a moment to keep it balanced, fearing it’s going to fall, but after a moment everything steadies and he slowly lifts her back into a standing position.   ‘i think so...’   he says, offering the project to her with a sheepish smile.   ‘the real question is are you okay?’

       ‘yeah,’   peter says, although he knows that’s not the answer finn wants.   ‘they’re trying to get a reaction outta you, and you don’t have to give it to ‘em, right? i mean, just think about how mad they’re gonna be when they’re spending all their energy trying to piss you off and you don’t let ‘em get under your skin.’   he knows it’s an imperfect solution--- sometimes guys like that don’t stop no matter how little attention you give them, sometimes they make you pay attention and sometimes it hurts--- but he also knows that finn can’t afford to get in trouble for violence at school, either. self-defense is one thing if another guy starts it, but swinging on someone for hurting your feelings is another. at least in the eyes of the school board.   ‘no problem, man, you know i got your back. seriously, don’t worry about those guys.’

       ‘no, it’s not that i don’t believe you, that’s not it at all, it’s just---’   it’s that you seem like the kind of person who’d tell your friends.   ‘it’s just embarrassing.’   peter’s collection of spider-man photos had luckily not blown his entire cover with maddy, but the twist that he’s just a spider-man fanboy had been one that he’d been very hesitant to land on.   ‘sorry, i was totally being paranoid. i just don’t want people thinking i’m like... obsessed with him. or anything. i just think the suit is cool.’   he should shut up now.

       ‘it’s up to me ‘cause i’m the one who can do it, y’know? i’m the one who can take a beating from these guys and come out of it alright, all these other people can’t. it’s like--- the cops try, you know, but just shooting at a giant lizard tearing through crowds ain’t really enough to cut it. and if i’m not there to stop ‘em, who else is gonna do it?’   peter hesitates for a minute, turning his head to look at the tops of the buildings to his left. he knows the city like the back of his hand now, able to navigate himself around whether he’s in the air or on the street.   ‘besides, i like some stuff about it, i guess,’   he admits finally, offering up a little shrug.   ‘i mean, it’s fun.’

       just after she stops, a man twice peter’s size charges him and slams him into the side of a building. there’s a loud,   ‘oof!’   followed by a strained,   ‘that didn’t even hurt,’   before spider-man’s head is grasped in the man’s hand and slammed back against the wall. for a moment it looks as if he won’t be able to get out of it, especially because there have to be stars in his eyes after the way the brick cracked behind his skull, but he brings his knee right up between the man’s ribs and hurts him enough that he lets go. once peter’s feet hit the ground again, he gets to work wrapping the man in enough webbing that he can’t pull his arms away from his body and then he trips him so he falls to the ground, unable to stand up. once things seem stable again for the moment, peter turns around and sees annette standing right where he’d left her. the man starts to shout, and peter shoots a web to cover his mouth before he speaks.  ‘hey, you shoulda gotten outta here. c’mon, let’s go before this guy figures out how to get up, alright? you’re gonna just come with me.’

       he hasn’t told harry because he doesn’t want to reveal his identity, doesn’t want to make things more complicated or make harry hate him more, but there’s a part of him that screams at him that he can trust harry, that he’s his best friend. part of him hopes against reason that if he sat harry down to tell him the truth, he’d listen and believe peter. the problem is that he’s let it go on for long enough now that he thinks the truth might still make harry mad, even if he believes him. because how could peter justify letting him suffer about it for this long?   ‘i just miss you.’

       ‘is that right?’   he asks after a moment of taking her in, lifting a hand toward her. now he’s smiling a little, but it looks like he’s almost trying to fight it off.   ‘well, come here, then, before whatever it is about that wears off.’

       peter knows it’s the last thing that ben would want him to feel, but every time he sees his uncle in pain he feels a heavy pang of guilt. it rocks through his chest and sits there, sometimes long enough that it feels like it’s never going to end, and he feels it now as he sits next to ben. he’s gotten better, he thinks, at not letting it show, but sometimes ben can tell something’s wrong even when he’s putting on what he thinks might be the best performance of his very amateur acting career.   ‘your secret’s safe with me this time,’   peter says, pressing a finger to his lips,   ‘but your money’s no good here, alright? i got the stuff i need.’   

       peter spends enough time outside in a skin-tight suit that he thinks he’s gotten pretty good at predicting the weather. sometimes he still mis-steps, coming home drenched from head to toe because he’d left his backpack on the top of a building to get rained on while he spent the night patrolling the city, but something in the air today says it’s going to get cold any minute now, and she’s probably not going to be home before the sun goes down.   ‘call it a sixth sense, but i think you’re gonna need it,’   he tells her. something about the way her hair falls down her back feels warm and familiar to him--- he’s seen it a million times over the years when she leaves for work or the store--- and he suddenly adds,   ‘hey, you want some company?’   he hasn’t spent as much time with her lately as he should have. as he wants to.
