Real Talk: I Had No Idea My Tyres Were This Bad Until I Got a Free Check
So this is a bit of a PSA post. Bear with me.
I consider myself a reasonably responsible person. I pay my bills roughly on time. I go to the dentist. I don't drive on empty. And yet somehow, until recently, I had genuinely never thought about my tyres beyond "they seem round and inflated, we're good."
I pulled into Resolution Tyres in Unanderra — family-owned place on Resolution Drive in Wollongong — just because I needed air in one tyre that was looking a bit sorry for itself. They offer free safety and pressure checks, so I figured, yeah, pull in, two minutes, done.
They found three issues I had absolutely zero awareness of.
First: my tread depth on the front two tyres was approaching the legal minimum. I could not have told you what the legal minimum was, let alone whether I was near it. (It's 1.5mm in Australia, for the record. Mine were sitting at 2mm. Getting there.)
Second: my wheel alignment was off. Apparently this can happen from hitting a pothole, which I do approximately every time I drive through a certain section of Crown Street, so... explains a lot. Misaligned wheels cause uneven tyre wear — so one side wears down faster than the other. Left unchecked, you're replacing tyres way earlier than you should be.
Third: one of my tyres had a slow puncture from a nail that was far enough in that I'd never noticed the pressure drop (it was gradual), but it had been slowly compromising the tyre for who knows how long.
All of this from a free check that took maybe fifteen minutes.
Now I will say: they didn't try to upsell me on everything at once. They were honest about what was urgent (the nail puncture — needed to be fixed, not just plugged from outside but properly repaired from the inside, which is apparently the only correct way to do it) and what was a "keep an eye on it" situation. That kind of honest advice from an independent workshop is genuinely refreshing when you're used to chain tyre places that sometimes make you feel like you need four new tyres every time you walk in.
The thing about Resolution Tyres that I want to highlight is that they're a proper family business. They've been serving Wollongong and the Illawarra area and they genuinely care about repeat customers in a way that a franchise outlet just... doesn't have the same incentive to. When your reputation is local and personal, you don't fudge the advice.
They also have this wild service that I had no idea existed: 24/7 mobile tyre repair. Meaning if you blow a tyre at 11pm on the Princes Highway, you can call them and they'll actually come to you. I don't know how many times I've heard about people sitting roadside for hours waiting for roadside assist. Having that option locally is genuinely valuable.
Stock-wise, they carry all the brands you'd actually want: Pirelli, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Dunlop, Falken, Hankook, Kumho, Yokohama. So they're not just pushing whatever one brand they happen to be tied to — they can actually match you to the right tyre for your car, your driving style, and your budget.
Anyway. Point of this post: go get your tyres checked. Especially if you're someone like me who didn't realise there was anything to check. The free safety and pressure check at Resolution Tyres is legitimately no-obligation and takes no time, and you might find out something you really needed to know.
Don't wait until you're on the side of the road at midnight. I say this with love.
