People will still binarize your character, even amongst relatively progressive people. You can explain over and over again that their gender is not binary even if they fit the mold and look the trope of an effeminate man, and can fit the label, that is not all they are. People will still flatten the character to be a "feminine binary man" first and not that they're not only a man which is a bit annoying when it happens over and over again. People act like if someone can be called or seen as a man, they are therefore the direct opposite of a girl and cannot "count" as one.

Even to those who Do flatten the character to an effeminate man entirely according to their own desires, that's exactly what they will do, and only do. They do not see their "effeminate man" as a full human being, but as the fun "gay best friend." They do not ever have the primary interest in being interacted with, or seen as a viable and interesting romantic investment. They are seen as unserious, unrealistic, and just not a deep or profound human being. It's the fun puppy dog side character treatment, not the main interest treatment.

Binary men that just Happen to have feminine features are more interesting than the purposefully feminine character.
