She smiles and it is a small thing, a touch muddled but seems honest enough. All the more honest for that touch of uncertainty that underscores the action. Dick can read the confusion as easily as he might words on a page. Then again, he’s never really known Raven to be anything but honest.

Lying doesn’t seem to be something that she does very often.

            “You want company, or would rather be on your own?”

  she’s so formal, she realizes, i wonder if that is why they think i am insincere? maybe she will gradually introduce a compatible speaking structure within the next couple of weeks. too bad, she assumed the more effort she put into her words showed her thoughtfulness.

  she is a little flustered, this attention is not uncomfortable but she is not used to it. she has always been cautious with these sorts of things; perhaps he should go?

  a stutter in her grace; a pained intake of breath. it is momentary before she regains her poise & seals her mask. the stars have reached me, she had thought, but the universe has never been so kind.

22. Leaning their head on mine’s shoulder tiredly

  there is a moment of displaced fluidity & everything around her is STATIC. all panicked limbs & shallow breaths & the feeling of needles pressing into muscles. nothing is real, she thinks, this isn’t how the world is supposed to feel. she checks & checks & checks for any rip or tear or bubble in the reality that she is in but she find no sign of fabrication.

  raven leaves her room around 2 pm, lethargy & pinpricks dissolving her blood. she thought, maybe my magic isn’t good enough. maybe there is something bigger. but maybe she is just tired. she collapses on the couch (more of a heavy float downward for her) and takes a deep breath, closes her eyes & hopes this will pass. like everything else does & will. & it will be like the time she saw the tides roll in an injured turtle; cracked shell & wheezy lungs. the tide rolled out & so did she.

  she is not asleep when robin sits next to her but she assumed he would leave soon enough. 

                         ❝ sort of weird today, huh? ❞ his fingers are tapping against something but she keeps her eyes closed.                        ❝ do you feel it too? ❞                        ❝ i feel tired, but i have a feeling you’re referring to something much heavier than sleep. ❞                        ❝ maybe. ❞ 

  they sit silently for a while, thinking & typing & being. raven considered shuffling back to her latent bedroom.                       ❝ let’s talk. ❞ robin sets down his laptop & beams at her tiredly.                       ❝ what are you distracting yourself from? ❞ she asks with a surprising lack of accusation.                       ❝ am i really that obvious? ❞ he meant to scoff but yawned instead.❝ i’m fighting sleep. i don’t want to take a nap & ruin my well-established sleep pattern.❞ he grins in good humour. they both know sleep comes rarely for him.

  mostly, he does the talking, but she encourages him appropriately to continue & when he asks if he can lay on her she sputters an “I suppose so.” he chuckles & leans on her shoulder & talks about things that don’t mean anything but somehow mean so much. raven responds when she has anything relevant & hopes he appreciates that she doesn’t say much because she doesn’t have that many anecdotes.
