We’ve been so fortunate to have a lovely week or so of warm sunny weather which has helped the kitchen gardens and gardens throughout the grounds. The Bluebell Woods are looking beautiful and the apple trees in the new orchard are coming into blossom.
We’d a busy Easter weekend with lovely guests being able to enjoy the fine weather, explore our local beaches and make use of the beautiful amenities such as the Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey close by. Families were able to avail of activities on our grounds and evening entertainment for all ages.
We are looking forward to a few busy months ahead and longer days in which to enjoy it.

We welcomed the first of our Christmas guests on the 23rd of December will a full house on Christmas Eve, everyone having arrived safely and settled in. Our younger guests had a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas day while others braved the Atlantic for a refreshing swim.
Great entertainment in the evening and a lot of talented guests joined in. The weather was perfect for walking, the Diamond Hill was visited by many as well as the gorgeous beaches locally. With a full house of lovely guests continuing until after the New Year was rung in with a live band and excellent dinner.

What is so lovely about having weddings at Renvyle House Hotel is that, like the Bridal couple, no two wedding celebrations are the same.
We can accommodate such a variety of ceremonies and celebrations given the unique location; a seaside venue, a house steeped in history, the grounds with gorgeous woodlands, gardens and orchards as well as our own private freshwater lake. Along with an extraordinary team headed up by Eurotques Commissioners Mr. Tim O’Sullivan in the kitchen, the Dining Room at Renvyle House produces a wedding banquet that is second to none with a lot of the produce grown in our own gardens.
Having refurbished the ‘Quiet Lounge’ earlier this year, we have been able to transpose it to a warm, intimate venue for smaller Civil Ceremonies which has been wonderful to be able to offer our Bridal Couples.

Our CEO Mr Ronnie Counihan has been planning the upgrade to our Kitchen Garden at Renvyle House since early Spring this year with some helpful tips from organic gardener and author Klaus Laitenberger (who will also be giving loads of tips and advice at our ‘Gardening Weekend‘ this October 19th – 21st) .
The additional poly tunnels were put up, the seedlings were carefully tended to and moved from one tunnel to the other as they matured. Some of the hardier plants were replanted outdoors in the Herb & Kitchen garden. After carefully considering what we would need for our Restaurant; the various herbs, salad leaves and vegetables were planned for and planted throughout the Summer with very fruitful results with the very freshest ingredients 50 paces from the kitchen! You can taste the difference.
The Autumn and Winter seedlings are being set presently with hopefully the same successful results.

To celebrate County Galway’s designation as a European Region of Gastronomy “The Bay Coast Wild Atlantic Way Food Festival” presented a week-long festival of gastronomy and culture on the Renvyle Peninsula and Killary Fjord in Connemara, Co. Galway organised by Mr. Ronnie Counihan, CEO of Renvyle House Hotel. It ran from Monday10th to Sunday 15th April 2018. “The experiences reflected our local natural resources, our culture and our people and included special Guests John and Sally McKenna and Aisling Rock, European Young Chef of the Year 2017”.
It was a great success and received great support from GMIT, Galway Bay FM and RTE’s Nationwide Programme.
The Festival Outline included:
Monday 9th April
A Cookery Demonstration featuring local fish and Connemara Lamb with executive chef, author and Eurotoques Commissioner, Tim O’Sullivan. Preparing and filleting of fish will be presented by fishmonger.
A guided walk with renowned archaeologist, Michael Gibbons, “Along the Wild Atlantic Way”. Michael will tell us about the way of life of different past generations and eras – pointing out some interesting and significant landmarks along the way.
Tuesday 10th April
Travel to Letterfrack for an organised tour of the local Oyster Farm DK Connemara Oysters at Dawros Beg, Letterfrack with owner David Keane.
Head Chef Tim O’Sullivan and oyster farmer, John Ward from Dooncastle Oysters will demonstrate the opening and shucking of oysters. Eating Oysters: Cooked & raw with tastings.
Wednesday 11th April
A visit to Marty’s Mussel farm on Killary Fjord (Ireland’s only fjord) followed by a cruise on the fjord, with Killary Cruises on the “Connemara Lady”. Gastro lunch will be served during this spectacular sea journey – duration is approximately 1½ hours.

A day of gastronomy at Kylemore Abbey with food writers John & Sally McKenna and executive chef John O’Toole. Celebrating foods of past and present as part of County Galway’s title of European Region of Gastronomy 2018. Learn all about our unique food heritage with jam making, chocolate tasting, garden tours, bee keeping, fish smoking, Connemara Lamb on a spit and lots more. We will also host some of County Galway’s best food producers with an open air food market featuring Goat’s cheese, honey, mussels, fresh fish, oysters and more.

To celebrate County Galway’s designation as a European Region of Gastronomy “The Bay Coast Wild Atlantic Way Food Festival” presented a week-long festival of gastronomy and culture on the Renvyle Peninsula and Killary Fjord in Connemara, Co.
You might think, after a hectic Christmas and New Year, that we’d be resting on our laurels for the few weeks we are closed….that’s not the case!
We’ve been busy refurbishing some of the areas that would be difficult to do with a full house. We continue to make the most of the 1920’s Arts & Crafts Design Movement features in the rooms whilst refreshing them. The Dining Room will look super for re-opening on the 9th February. Below are images of the behind the scenes / work in progress.
We have opened up a Reading Room at the end of our Long Lounge (a quiet area for adults to retire to for some peace and quiet, read the paper or a good book or simply time to think) in what was the old Library before the house was burned down in the Civil War and more recently the Billiard Room which was seeing less and less use by our guests over the years.
We have some photographs of the work in progress from a week ago, it’s looking great this week and will update photos shortly.
We have super spring midweek breaks and a great array of Themed Activity Breaks (weekend and midweek) for you to enjoy.

We are currently refurbishing our dining room which we hope you will enjoy when you come to stay with us, along with Tim and his team’s delicious food of course.
We are also reinstating the reading room “Quiet Room” / Seomra Ciúin at the end of the Long Lounge. It was a Billiard Room for quite a number of years but with little use over the last few year and helpful suggestions from our guests for a quiet space to read and relax, we thought it a good idea to make the change.
We reopen on the 9th February and look forward to welcoming everyone then.

This midweek break will have both afternoon classes and evening dancing sessions. Ballroom dancing music will be performed by the Waltz King, Sam O’Doherty. Sam will play on Tuesday evening, on Wednesday afternoon from 2pm-4pm, on Wednesday evening and on Thursday afternoon from 2pm-4pm. On Thursday evening there will be a waltzing competition with prize-giving to follow.

On Friday evening, there will a tasting of four different Chilean wines accompanied by a light buffet of Chilean Foods. After a leisurely, cooked to order breakfast on Saturday morning, Professor Michael Gibbons will take you on a 3 to 4 hour guided walk of the Renvyle Peninsula providing a wealth of knowledge on the area – both historic and archaeological. What a way to welcome the new wines from France! It was a weekend of the most delicious food, great company and a lovely choice of Beaujolais Nouveau wines.
On Friday evening, head chef Tim O’Sullivan and his team cooked a beautiful buffet with such gorgeous choices of french food including terrines, foie fras, paté, scallops, mussels, vennison and pheasant to name a few. The French Honorary Consul to Galway, Catherine Gagneaux introduced the Beajolais Nouveau wines which were sampled, the history behind them and what to look for.
On Saturday morning, a beautiful morning, guests partook in a beautiful and very interesting 3 hour walk around the Renvyle Peninsula guided by historian and archaeologist Michael Gibbons who pointed out many places of interest, the history, geology, geography and archaeology along the route.
Saturday night’s Banquet was carefully put together by Tim O’Sullivan and Ronnie Counihan and was based on the French chef, restaurateur and culinary writer Mr. Georges Auguste Escoffier recipes. Georges Escoffier popularized and updated traditional French cooking methods (1846-1935). A delicious feast accompanied by George de Boeuf’s Beaujolais Nouveau wine.
We will be running more Gourmet breaks in the Spring 2018 as part of the Galway European Region of Gastronomy 2018 so keep an eye on our website;
One will be our Chilean Food & Wine Weekend (2nd – 4th March) with Jorge Coderch of the Caballo Loco vineyard travelling to be with us along with the Chilean Ambassador to Ireland. The other will be our inaugural, week long Wild Atlantic Way Bay Coast Food Festival (8th – 15th April) also in conjunction with the Galway European Region of Gastronomy 2018.
