8 Funerals in 4 Years
March 2023 - paternal grandmother, which was ROUGH because she was a surrogate mom-figure for me and my siblings
Also March 2023 - great aunt D on my dad's side, held the day before Grandma's funeral since they passed around the same time and a lot of family members would be in town for one or the other
November 2023 - not a funeral, but the 4-month-old kitten I'd found and raised since birth had to be put to sleep due to FIP and that actually wrecked me
April 2024 - great aunt V on my dad's side
November 2024 - great aunt S on my dad's side (Grandpa had 11 brothers and sisters but she was the last)
May 2025 - longtime family friend, also died of old age
November 2025 - great aunt by marriage on my dad's side; I actually missed this one due to being out of town
January 2026 - Dad's sister; this one hit hard because she was only in her early 60s and has a daughter who is just ~25
June 2026 - Mom's mother passed away last night, and she wanted to be buried next to Papa, so I know the funeral will be soon

Something I think is critical for humans to survive AND thrive is to have an identity or ego that no one can take away from you.

Most of the time, the age gap isn't the cause, but it can be a symptom.
People who are abusive or controlling or even just insecure will (sometimes unconsciously) seek out partners who are vulnerable, inexperienced, or beneath them in a power dynamic. Because they are easier to manipulate and control.
Age gap =/= abusive relationship. But it can be a warning sign.

ON RAVENS
Speed and distance: Based on some quick research I think a healthy raven in normal conditions could probably average 300 miles in a day. That said, the longer the journey, the fewer average miles per day, since the raven would need to sleep and hunt. So, for journeys 301-499 miles, I estimated an average 250 mpd; for journeys 500-699 miles, I estimated an average 200 mpd; and for journeys over 700 miles, I went with a flat 150 mpd. I'm also assuming they fly mostly straight and aren't bothered by changes in elevation.
Locations: GRRM is vague about how the ravens work but essentially they seem to be able to find fixed locations. Let's assume a raven in any rookery in Westeros could find any major castle if needed. This means that ravens can't find people who are marching or in the field. They can SEND ravens if they have them (ala Sam on the great ranging in ACOK) though.
Some commonly noted calculations for raven trips:
King's Landing <- -> Winterfell = 10 days
King's Landing <- -> Castle Black = 14 days
Castle Black <- -> Winterfell = 3 days
Oldtown <- -> Winterfell = 21 days
Asking because a few months ago I started a huge insane autism project of trying to figure out where each chapter/event in ASOIAF falls on a calendar, and now I'm doubting myself (of course).
My goal generally was to err on the side of caution and to keep the timeline tight, but also to keep it based on what could be reasonably assumed from information we have in the text and not random guesses.
Here are some disclaimers:
1. I know GRRM intended things to be vague so that people can't do exactly what I'm trying to do. I don't care because he's had 14.5 years to put out the next book and I'm sick of waiting.
2. I know there is a fan-made calendar accessible via Reddit and while I am using that as a sort of check against my own, that one doesn't seem to account for moon cycles, which I think are really important.
3. I was inspired by a video from Preston Jacobs about the timing of the Pink Letter so blame him for this I guess
4. I'm assuming that the Planetos moon works the same way ours does (~29 day cycle).
5. I'm working from a fan-made map and using the Wall as my scale for distance (I believe GRRM once said the Wall is about 300 miles long).
6. I am estimating travel times for raven flight, riders, large groups of travelers, people moving on foot, etc. None of it is precise, but it's all I got.
7. The purpose of this is to scratch my autistic brain but also for funsies. My intent is not to pick holes in the story or find errors.
