I recently went to this amazing blues jam night with my boyfriend Jon, there is so much I could write about... and I plan to be a regular there, so I'm sure there will be more later... but the thing that has stuck with me most is this phrase that we kept hearing echoed throughout the night. "I want to give you flowers while you're still here." This concept is so simple and lovely. I got out of my seat and danced after some convincing, "Dance, while you still can." ...You don't know how long you have, you won't be young forever, you may not have another opportunity, you may not always be capable... so do it while you still can. It was a tribute night the evening we went; a tradition they have where they choose a player who's been around a while, and take a night to honor them. (A really awesome thing, especially in a city full of musicians who often get overlooked.) A night to say that they're appreciated, that they matter. Families come, people fly in from out of town, and instead of the usual few songs, they have as much time as they want to play their own stuff, get dressed all swanky and have the spotlight. "We want to honor you, while you're still here." I love it. Don't wait to dance, to play, to sing, to do what you love. Do it before you can't anymore. You don't have to wait to show people love, to honor them and who they are; do it now. Love yourself while you're still here. Give people flowers, while they're still here. <3
