The first news Lan WangJi had of Wei WuXian for five years was printed in the paper for anyone to see. He almost skipped the article with its sensationalistic headline—Yiling Business Owner Buried In Lawsuits For Reviving The Dead—until Wei WuXian’s name jumped out at him from the block of text. Wondering if it might be someone else, he read the quote.

…when asked to comment, Wei WuXian responded: “Of course I want to think they’re okay with it. Who wouldn’t want to be able to comfort a loved one from beyond the grave? But I don’t know for sure, and I’m not going to put words into anyone’s mouths, not even if they’re dead. People can judge me however they like. I’m not going to stop.”

He re-read the headline. Then the first paragraph. Then the whole article. It was, obviously, not as impossible as the title had suggested. It was still a novel thing Wei WuXian had done, something creative and controversial that only he could have been dreamed up. Lan WangJi set the paper down and considered what he’d read. Then, he pulled out his phone, searched for whichever flight or train would get him to Yiling the fastest, bought a ticket, and packed a bag.
