Windows 10 Upgrade
No, I don’t want to update this Windows 7 Virtual Machine, it’s Windows 7 so I can debug software on.. Windows 7.
GO AWAY!
Kali Linux
Why didn’t I start using this years ago - made a nice VM and I never have to care about installing a tool on any of the platforms I use again, apart from VirtualBox.
Counterstrike Paintball
A Redditor has discovered a real-world replica of a map from the multiplayer FPS ‘Counterstrike’, possibly for paintballing. No one is really sure where this is - one thread points to being based in China, another that it’s based in the UK and put together in 2003 (!!!)
You can see more examples and follow the conversation at Reddit here
std::tuple or, why oh why oh why oh WHY
WHY?!
Seriously, look at it. Look at all that code.
We could have got an addition to the language that allowed us to create and introspect structs via some template type mechanism - problem solved, and a whole load of other cool things.
But no. We got std::tuple.
I just.. no. Fuck you.

Stop naming software libraries. Forever. I mean YOU.
Being a C++ developer who tends to get his kicks writing compilers and signal processing software, I don't often get to play with the wonderful world of 'using other people's really fucking stupidly named libraries'.
( That's ignoring the C++ 'std' namespace - you just go.. numb after a while ).
This: 'huge issue with accordions' I know what those words mean, but WTF is it? Well, you can easily work it out can't you?
Of course!
And that's a second of my time when I could have been thinking about breakfast, or cheese, or sunflowers or pies or something better. That is a tiny little example, not even that bad. There are way way worse.
Name. Engineering. Stuff. After. What. It. Fucking. Does.
'But how do I make my library stand out if I don't name it something cool?!' you ask. Of course, you want people to use your stuff don't you! Well, when I'm looking around for some bit of code to handle a certain task, I'm looking for what it does, not your fancy name which I don't even fucking know yet!
And if you do what every other thing does.. why would you expect anyone to use your code? I'd pick the one with the more boring name every time.
It's probably better engineered due to being used and developed by more people.
( as a note, I found it hard to remember what stupid names I'd seen, due to the fact that when I see one, I immediately retire that name from my working memory ).
Another Compiler Bug
And another repo submitted. I've found an unnatural number of compiler bugs over the years, this was a weirdo one though. I'll have to wait and see what Apple say.
I must have crashed Xcode about 50 times today tracking it down.
Rule of Zero
Hello C++11, got five rules now have you?
It was three! And that could be annoying.
Zero you fucker, I'm using fucking zero! Oh and I'm defaulting all your virtual destructors too.
RAII and Smart pointers with Deleters. Never write a move constructor ever again. Or a destructor either.
Horizon to..
..horizon. Shame I only had my phone on me.
Pie cloud
I swear this cloud looked just like a mince pie.. until I tried to take a picture.
Bloody clouds.

Damn it..
..more horse. All the sheep, goats and cows around here appear to be hiding, else the farms went bust in the 10 years since I last walked around here.
In a wood, miles from anywhere..
..what in the name of fuck. I get away from the internet on a run, and you little bastards are still everywhere.
Horse?
Well duh. Says the horse.
Who put that there?
Plasma sky. Made the run interesting.
Better Than Concrete
It's much better having a run in the morning through this than the built up stuff I had to in Manchester. To be fair, Manchester does look the better of the two, but you have to go out about 3am! (Which is brilliant if you cut through the city center and around Manchester University).

XCode
I've spent more time fighting XCode today than actually writing any code. How am I supposed to make this machine make cool pictures if it won't do what I say (I'm looking at you dependent projects)! Back to Quartz Composer tomorrow, I need to get some native effects compiled - the apple stock patches are way too clunky for what I need, it's nice just being able to write a shader rather than needing 20 linked patches to do the same thing.
More pretty interactive stuff, less fiddling with compiler options.
It tried to hide..
It failed. Nice try Mr Moth.
