Massive street protests have erupted across Ukraine following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision to dismiss the country's highly popular, tech savvy Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov. Thousands of demonstrators, primarily young citizens, have taken to the streets in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Kharkiv to demand his reinstatement. The public backlash marks a severe political crisis for Zelenskyy, as Fedorov was widely credited with modernizing Ukraine's drone and missile capabilities and driving key anti corruption reforms within the military establishment. The political turmoil centers on several deep seated internal conflicts that spilled into the open following the announcement. Rift with the Military Command: President Zelenskyy cited irreconcilable friction between the 35 year-old Fedorov and the 60 year old Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi. Fedorov publicly accused Syrskyi of blocking innovation and creating division, stating that military leaders were relying on outdated approaches. Fedorov angered well connected traditional defense contractors by exposing billions in defense spending inefficiencies and allowing frontline soldiers to procure their own tech directly via a military website. Protesters view the removal as a victory for an "old guard" military establishment. The decision also triggered high level military fallout. Col. Pavlo Yelizarov, the Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force and a prominent drone commander, resigned in protest, calling the ouster "a great evil for the country's defense capability".
