Introducing REKursiv NEMO
REKursiv NEMO is an experimental music, animation and narrative art project built somewhere between a virtual band, an ongoing film series and an increasingly elaborate nervous breakdown.
Created and directed by independent artist 'Vael Monas', REKursiv NEMO combines original songwriting, performance, digital production, animation, generative media, collage, video editing and an expanding cast of fictional characters into a single evolving body of work.
It is tempting to describe this as “AI music.” It is also not particularly accurate.
The songs are conceived, written, arranged, directed and extensively produced as authored pieces of music. Generative systems are used alongside conventional instruments, recording, sampling, synthesis, editing and other digital tools. The same principle extends to the visual work: AI-generated material may provide performances, images, textures or raw footage, but these elements are repeatedly directed, selected, manipulated, edited and assembled into finished films.
AI is therefore part of the production environment, not the artist.
A better description might be AI-assisted multimedia art, although even that only tells part of the story. REKursiv NEMO treats contemporary generative technology less like an automated content machine and more like an unstable new collection of cameras, instruments, actors, effects units and collaborators.
At the centre of it all is NEMO, a CCTV-headed musician surrounded by dysfunctional band members and a growing surreal mythology. Their world moves freely between absurdist comedy, social anxiety, domestic life, existential dread, punk, metal, electronic music, retro games, collage, animation and whatever else the next song happens to demand.
There is no prompt that produces REKursiv NEMO.
There is a person obsessively making it.
REKursiv NEMO is not an attempt to automate art. It is an attempt to discover what kind of art becomes possible when these strange new machines are deliberately placed in the hands of an artist.
