Merry enstarsmas!! Here is my @enstars-secret-santa for Lacey!
I imagine Koga would crash out over how bad the voice recognition in Nintendogs is while waiting for band practice to start. Adonis is there for moral support (and Reis coffin is there for physical support)...

Itâs as the photoshoot director is pouring the fifth glass of imported Pinot noir that Rei begins to consider that he may have flown too close to the sun.
His alcohol tolerance normally isn't much of an issue. Frequent trips to countries in which the legal drinking age is far lower than Japan have given Rei the opportunity to have a uniquely refined palette for someone so freshly of age, on top of making him aware of his naturally high tolerance to alcohol. Just like everything else about him, it is unrealistically exceptional.
But just because his tolerance is exceptional doesnât mean it isnât fallible.

my gift for @smallermangoes for the @enstars-secret-santa event 2025! (pretending like i haven't already sent this) i hope you enjoy <3
Itâs as the photoshoot director is pouring the fifth glass of imported Pinot noir that Rei begins to consider that he may have flown too close to the sun.Â
Just like everything else about him, it is unrealistically exceptional.Â
But just because his tolerance is exceptional doesnât mean it isnât fallible.Â
âAhaha!â the director cackles, his laughter carrying the smell of his inebriated breath to Reiâs poor nose. âYâknow, Sakuma-sanâ â he throws his arm around him, and Rei stifles a flinch. âMost pretty boys I work with canât hold their liquor well, but you! Youâre on what, glass number⌠three? Four? Thatâsâ â he hiccups, âreally impressive!âÂ
Rei smiles at him, and does the best version of his signature charm that he can manage at the moment. âI took my fair share of trips to Europe in my youth,â he explains. âIn Paris they wouldnât let me leave until I could describe the difference between a cheap Merlot and aged Cabernet Sauvignon.âÂ
Apparently, this is the funniest thing heâs said all night, because the director throws his head back as he and the other staff at the table roar with laughter. âNo wonder! I knew I wasnât wrong to waste such an expensive bottle on you.â
Rei nods, head feeling heavy as he does so. âEven without having already seen the bottle, I certainly can⌠taste it.âÂ
The director nods back sagely. âAs expected of someone so cultured.âÂ
Rei can only think to nod again, taking another sip of his wine so that he wonât have to say anything else. As far as nomikais go, this one had gone on for quite awhile longer than he was used to. Typically, entertaining the staff of whatever job heâd taken or was planning to take is fairly easy; heâd have a few glasses of whatever they served him, do a few hours of meandering small talk, and be done before the trains stop running. He very rarely even feels it the next day. Such is the way of a lifelong people pleaser.Â
The director of this specific shoot, however, had surprised him with a very expensive bottle of wine for a job well done, and had managed to goad Rei into staying far longer than he intended, and even worseâ drinking far more than he intended. Five glasses in and Reiâs starting to wonder if sleeping on the street like a stereotypical salaryman would be more trouble than itâs worth.Â
I couldnât. Koga-kun would have my head, Rei thinks to himself, sighing tiredly. He thinks of how mad his poor puppy would be, and even worse, how disappointed and annoyed Adonis and Kaoru would be, respectively. As tempting as the idea is to his intoxicated brain of getting out of here and curling up on the plush pavement, he has to remember that he has an image to uphold as an idol. And that his unitmates would berate him.Â
Despite trying to stifle it, Rei lets out a yawn that goes on for longer than he intended it to. Fortunately, it does not go unnoticed. âSakuma-san,â a womanâs voiceâ his makeup artist⌠he thinksâ asks, âAre you feeling tired?âÂ
Before he can answer, the director cuts him off, âAhaha! Well, I suppose even those who have high tolerances have their limits!â He takes a long sip of his drink. âGet out of here, we can all take care of the rest of the bottle, right?â he questions the table, receiving fanfare from the staff, only half of which is genuine. âIdols need their beauty sleep, after all.â
Normally, Rei would insist he stay, giving some sort of spiel about being a creature of the night, but right now, through his fatigue and the alcohol fogging his brain, all he can say is, âYes⌠I really should be going. Thank you for the wine and for your company.âÂ
He stands up and bows deeply, the movement making his head spin. As he puts on his outerwear, he tries his best to not seem as if heâs rushing to leave. With one last grateful bow and goodbye, Rei exits the izakaya.Â
Itâs snowing as he steps back into the real world, a frigid wind immediately hitting his face and blowing his hair sideways. Looking down at his watch, Rei is met with the realization that he had been kept far later than he wouldâve liked. 11:49PMâŚÂ
Well, taking the train definitely isnât an option. In the back of his mind, Rei knows walking home in his state during such intense snowfall is probably a bad idea. He briefly considers the idea of calling someone, but dismisses it quickly. Everyone he can call is likely asleep. This isnât something to bother them with.Â
Not finding any better options, he steels himself and begins the long walk back.Â
Consciousness finds Rei slowly, as it always tends to, yet this time thereâs a notable stickiness, as if his entire body is encased in honey. His head pounds with a hangover, and horrifyingly, his throat burns with a scratch that he can feel in his ear, somehow.Â
Cracking his eyes open feels even harder than usual, and even despite opening them to be nothing more than snake-like slits, light still blinds him, making his head pound in protest. One of his roommates evidently forgot to close the curtains for him. If it was Aira, then it was an honest mistake made by a beloved yet ditzy junior, and if it was Eichi, then he is a malicious creature of pure spite who will get his comeuppance in due time.Â
Rei pulls his comforter over his entire body to shield his delicate eyes from the light, and immediately regrets that decision as well, as it makes him acutely aware of just how hot his body feels. At the same time, he doesnât feel warm enough, a shiver running through his entire body, the source of the cold coming from so deep inside of him that he thinks he may never be warm again.Â
Evidently, drinking five glasses of expensive wine and then walking back to the dorms in the snow was a bad idea for someone with a physical constitution as weak as his. It's a minor miracle he even made it to bed in the first place, but that's where his good fortune comes to an end. A cough not unlike that of a toddler wracks through his body, and he groans. This illness would be bad enough on its own, but the latent effects of his prior intoxication are making his head throb with pain, like his brain is trying to escape the confines of his skull.
He begins to feel himself slipping back into his state of mild comatose, and heâs going to allow it, when a truly horrible noise begins to ring out, so loud that Rei physically shrivels up, the sound like heâs being lobotomized. It goes on for an agonizingly long amount of time. Rei feels tears prick at his eyes from the pain in his head. When the blaring stops, itâs not a second too soon.
He sniffles, trying his best to recover from the assault on his mind, body, and ears. Heâs allowed around thirty seconds of reprieve before the horrible noise starts up again. Rei moans in agony, and itâs then that he finally registers the noise as that of his phone ringing. Which means he can make it stop on his own. Sticking his hand out of his blanket sanctuary, he paws around for his phone, dragging it off his bedside table.Â
Despite fully intending to simply silence his phone, Rei accidentally picks up the call, not even seeing who it was from. He whines, not wanting to have to speak. Unfortunately, his benevolent nature wins out in the end.Â
âHâ Hello?â Rei starts, cringing at how hoarse his voice sounds.Â
â...ei-kun?â a voice asks. It takes a second for him to recognize it as Kaoru's voice. âRei-kun? Is that you?âÂ
â...It is,â is the most intelligent thing Rei can think to say in response.Â
Thereâs a moment of muffled static, like Kaoru is pressing his phone up against his chest, but Rei can still make out him saying something vaguely along the lines of, âSee, Koga-kun, I told you heâd pick up for me~ â followed by a smacking sound, and then, âOw!âÂ
âIs Koga there?â
âYeah, so is Adonis-kun,â Kaoru says, presumably putting the phone back up to his ear. âThatâs why Iâm calling, weâre all wondering where you are. Did you forget that we have practice today?âÂ
Yes, I did, in fact, forget we have practice today, Rei thinks to himself pitifully. He suppresses another whine. He really does not feel well enough to even leave his bed. Instead of saying any of that, he says, âOf course not, my dearest Kaoru-kun. Do you really think so lowly of my ability to remember my scheduled commitments, especially those of which involve my most treasured companions?â
Before Kaoru can respond to his bullshitting, Koga speaks up. âYa sound like ya coughed up a lung and then died, Sakuma-senpai.âÂ
âYou always know exactly what to say to make a manâs heart swoon, Koga,â Rei laments as dramatically as he can manage. He hopes the teasing is suitable enough deflection to get them to drop it.
It isnât, unfortunately. âSakuma-senpai,â thatâs Adonisâ voice this time, âOogami is right. You sound ill, are you sure youâre all right?â
âDo you want us to cancel practice today?â Kaoru asks, concern dripping from his tone. âI can come pick you up from your room if you neeâ âÂ
âThat wonât be necessary,â Rei says, cutting Kaoru off. âI feel fine. I will see you all at practice in around twenty minutes.â And with that, he ends the call before they can express any more unease. The one thing he cannot stand more than his splitting headache is the feeling of disappointing them.
Rei rises from his bed slowly, feeling like a film depiction of an ancient mummy awakening from its tomb. As far as he remembers, he doesnât have anything else to do today, unless he does, but thatâs a problem for him later. All he needs to do is get through around two hours of Undead practice, and then he will be free to come back to his room and sleep to his heartâs content.
Hopefully he can last that long, he thinks as he wobbles slightly upon standing up.Â
Like many things heâs done in the past twenty-four hours, this was also a bad idea.Â
Rei is hiding outside the practice room, supporting himself on the wall and trying to get his body to cooperate. What was supposed to be twenty minutes has ended up being more like thirty, as he pathetically limped his sweaty, feeble self over to ESâs practice rooms. As he massages his head, trying to get this migraine to finally relieve itself, he begins to realize that there is no way he can keep up the act of being healthy for two hours.Â
But heâll be damned if he isnât going to try with everything in him. With all the resolve he has, Rei stands up straight, clears his throat to the best of his ability, and opens the door to the practice room.Â
âGood morningâ â he tries to say, before being cut off by a nasty hacking fit that sets his lungs on fire.Â
When heâs done, Rei is met by the judgmental stares of all three of his unitmates.
âAnd ya fuckinâ look like death too,â Koga says.Â
âSakuma-senpaiâŚâ Adonis follows up, his worry being the most apparent out of the three of them, compared to Kaoru and Koga, who both look to be some mix of incredulous and annoyed at the same time.
âYeah, no,â Kaoru says, coming over towards him. âYou look absolutely terrible. Iâm taking you back to your room right now.â
He places a hand on Rei's shoulder, attempting to guide him back towards the door, but Rei dodges him, the sudden movement making him sway slightly. âHello to you all, as well,â he says casually, trying his best to seem alright despite knowing that his ruse has already been seen right through. âThough I appreciate your concern, I can assure you that I am fine. I simply have a slight cold.âÂ
âAnd Iâve got the angelic tenor voice of Jeff Buckley,â Koga deadpans, absentmindedly revealing his latest rock music fixation.Â
Rei sees the opening, and takes it, âYou certainly have his captivating aura. Truly that of a born star~ â
He watches as this almost works on Koga, his chest puffing up slightly with pride at such high praise from his idol. Unfortunately, he snaps out of it when Adonis tugs on his sleeve, asking him who Jeff Buckley is. âHeâsâ heâs a musician, heâs really fuckinâ coolâ it doesnât matter right now!â He turns to Rei. âYer fuckinâ sick as a dog! Why are ya even here right now?âÂ
Rei sighs. âI didnât feel as though missing practice was worth it. As I said, it is only a slight cold.âÂ
âWell, to be fair, Rei-kun, a âslight cold' to you is kind of like the equivalent of pneumonia to the average person,â Kaoru quips. Koga and Adonis both nod in response.Â
âSuch little faith you all have in my body~ â Rei jokes back, refusing to let up. At this point, lying about his condition will probably end worse than giving into their whims, but he just canât. Admitting defeat here would be unbecoming.
Kaoru continues to hover around him like a mosquito. Before Rei gets a chance to stop him, Kaoru catches him off guard and grabs his shoulder, turning him around to face him. The sudden movement makes Reiâs head spin, and Kaoru takes advantage of the moment of weakness to press the back of his hand against Reiâs forehead. Kaoru is warmâ warm in a nice, gentle wayâ and without thinking, Rei shuts his eyes and lets himself focus only on the sensation of being touched.Â
Kaoru frowns, brows furrowing with worry. âYouâre burning up⌠how are you even standing right now?âÂ
Rei canât answer, wondering the same thing himself as he suddenly becomes overwhelmingly dizzy. His ears feel full of cotton, but he thinks he hears footsteps coming towards him. A different hand replaces Kaoruâs, and Rei feels the cool metal of rings, and with that information he can at least deduce that itâs Kogaâs.Â
He hears the click of someoneâs tongue, he thinks. That sounds like something Koga would do right now. His senses feel like theyâre blurring around the edges, and he doesnât know whatâs happening anymore, so he has to try and make logical deductions. He feels himself begin to lose his ability to stand, and as he lurches to the side, strong arms steady him around his waist. As he feels the solid frame of whoever it is behind him, he deduces that must be Adonis.Â
Itâs the last thing Rei manages to deduce before consciousness slips away from him. Â
When he comes to, Rei is somehow back in his bed, as if even trying to leave it in the first place had all been some kind of funny dream.Â
He knows it must not have been, because somehow he feels even worse than he did when he woke up the first time, full body shivering despite being encased underneath his comforter. At least now the headache from the hangover has lessened into a dull pinch around his frontal lobe rather than a tension that makes his entire head throb.Â
He hesitates to fully open his eyes, slightly traumatized by the prior assault of sunlight, but when he finally manages to open them, he finds the room to be mostly dark, with the blinds closed to only let in a gentle amount of light.Â
Rei breathes out a sigh of relief, finding it almost hard to do so with the congestion blocking his throat. He hears movement to his side, and turns his head to see Adonis sitting in a chair next to him.Â
âSakuma-senpai, youâre awakeâŚâ Adonis says hesitantly. His brows are knit together in apprehension, and his mouth points downwards into a frown that looks as if it were chiseled into his face that way.Â
âAdonis-kun,â Rei replies, voice rough. He opens his mouth to follow up, but is cut off by a harsh coughing fit. Adonisâ expression somehow droops even further. Itâs a cute look on him, and it makes Rei smile as he regains composure. âRelax, Adonis-kun. Iâm not on my deathbed⌠yet.â
This does not seem to comfort him. Though not outright annoyed the way most are, Adonis has never been the type to be amused by Reiâs sense of humor, even when they were younger. Rei decides to go easy on him. âAre you the one who brought me back?â
Adonis nods. âI carried you here. Oogami went to the store to go get some things for you, and Hakaze-senpai went to the kitchen to go make you something to eat. They should both be returning shortly. They told me to stay here so you wouldnât wake up alone.âÂ
Rei hums and closes his eyes, basking in the lovely sentiment. Rather than feverish, the warmth of this feeling was the gentle incandescence of a crackling fireplace. âThank you. Youâre all so kind to me⌠despite my difficulties.âÂ
âOf course, Sakuma-senpai. Youâre our leader, and we care about you very deeply,â Adonis replies, ever the honest boy he is.Â
You shouldnât have to, Rei thinks to himself wearily.
They fall into comfortable silence. Though Rei wishes Adonis would speak his mind more when it counts, itâs nice to know someone with such a soothing presence.Â
A full body shiver randomly wracks his body, and he sniffles discontentedly. He feels Adonis move at his side, gently hiking the blanket higher over his shoulders. Rei smiles softly to himself.Â
When he pulls away, Rei peeks an eye open. Adonis is staring intensely at the middle of his bed, lost in thought. The look on his face conveyed reluctance, and itâs not unfamiliar. Heâs known Adonis long enough to know when his hesitance to speak up against any sort of perceived authority makes him bite his tongue.
âSomething on your mind?â
Adonis shrinks slightly, eye flitting over to Rei before fixing themselves awkwardly back on the spot on his bed. He doesnât say anything for a moment, trying to find the polite words to say what he wants to say. Rei patiently waits for him to find them.
âSakuma-senpai, have we⌠I⌠not been up to your standards recently?â he starts.Â
âNot been up to my standards?â Rei echoes. âOf course not; you all are as talented and lively as ever.âÂ
Adonisâ shoulders sag. He looks at Rei, and briefly he sees the eyes of the shy boy who had hid behind his mother and clung to her dress when they first met. âThen⌠Why did you not allow us to help you when you were so obviously feeling ill?â
Ah. Rei hadnât not expected this, but to hear that Adonis had translated his resistance as a failure of his own cracked Reiâs heart. âThatâs not a failing on your part, my dear Adonis-kun,â he says, smiling weakly at him.Â
Adonis frowns. âIâm still sorry⌠I need to be stronger for you all.â
Itâs not even close to being true. But Adonis canât be convinced with words when heâs like this, so Rei decides that instead of trapping them in an endless loop of apologies, heâll pivot. âIf you want to help me then, you can help me sit up. Iâm simply too frail to do so myself right now. Help me, Adonis-kun~ I need the assistance of your strong arms~ âÂ
Despite Reiâs jovial tone, Adonis is eager in the way he stands to help him again. Slotting his arms underneath Reiâs own, he wraps his upper body into a hug, supporting his back as he pulls him upwards. Rei lets out a pleased sigh, the contact feeling nicer than he had expected.Â
Halfway into a sitting position, the door opens, and Rei looks over Adonisâ shoulder to see Koga, a convenience store paper bag in one hand, holding the door open for Kaoru, who is carefully carrying quite the lavish dining display. Reiâs stomach grumbles at the sight. He feels Adonisâ faint smile at the sound against his shoulder.Â
âJeez, get a damn room,â Koga grumbles as he turns to lock the door behind him.Â
Rei coughs. âWell, as it so appears⌠this is my room.âÂ
Koga does not look impressed by that response, though he walked right into it. Adonis pulls away to turn around and take the tray from Kaoru, who immediately sits on the bed and touches Reiâs face to take his temperature. The look on his face is that of a wife about to be widowed. Rei leans deeper into the touch, almost purring.Â
Whatever Kaoru feels, he doesnât like, because he turns to Koga and says, âThermometer,â as a demand rather than a request.Â
Koga dips his hand into his bag and tosses it to Kaoru, who nearly doesnât catch it. He glares halfheartedly at Koga before pulling the tab off the box. A few moments of fiddling later, heâs giving Rei an insistent look, and he opens his mouth so that Kaoru can stick the thermometer under Reiâs tongue.Â
It beeps thirty seconds later. Kaoru pulls it out of Reiâs mouth and frowns as he looks at it. â38.8.âÂ
âJesus,â Koga says, grimacing as he sits at the foot of Reiâs bed. âHow the hell didâya even get so sick in the first place.â
Kaoru moves out of the way for Adonis to set the tray on Reiâs lap. Rei clears his throat. âYou all know how I get around this time of year. I didnât find it ideal for such weaknesses to affect our preplanned practice sessions.â
Kaoru does not look impressed at this answer. âUh-huh. And this wouldnât have anything to do with how Ran-kun said he saw you coming back to the dorms last night around midnight covered in snow.âÂ
Rei falters, and before he can defend himself, Koga cuts him off, âWhat the hell? Didnât ya have a modeling job yesterday?â
âI didnât think Koga-kun still kept track of my schedule so closely~ â Rei jests. âIf Doggy wants to spend time with me, he can just ask. Thereâs no need to stalk me.âÂ
Koga clicks his tongue, face slightly red. âYer schedule said the shoot ended around seven, what the hell were ya doing out so late?â
âYouâre kinda proving his point, Koga-kunâŚâ
âShut up!â Koga barks at Kaoru. Rei winces at the volume.Â
All the attention in the room is back on him, and he knows theyâve backed him into a corner. Sighing, Rei leans back and closes his eyes, âThe photoshoot director wanted everyone to go out after we had all wrapped up for the day. I didnât want my refusal to reflect badly on Undead. I had a bit too much to drink, the trains were no longer running, and so I chose to brave the storm and walk home by myself.âÂ
Koga clicks his tongue again. âAnd why the hell didnât ya call one of us?! Or anyone?! We would've come to get ya!âÂ
âI did not feel as though it was worth it to bother you all so late at night.â
â...I was awake,â Adonis says plainly, but Rei can hear the disappointment in his voice.Â
âSo was I,â Kaoru follows up.Â
âI was awake too,â Koga ends. âIt mustâve been, what, a quarter to midnight? Do ya think weâre all children that go to bed at eight every night?âÂ
Rei shrinks slightly, not knowing exactly how to respond to them. Heâs normally better at deflection than this, but the illness clouds his ability to think of a way to ease their worry without giving too much away. Though, he guesses it's too late for the âgiving too much awayâ portion.
Koga clicks his tongue, again, setting a record for the most Koga-tongue-clicks in the span of five minutes. âNext time, call us, idiot.â
Rei doesnât respond, suddenly feeling extremely vulnerable. Thereâs a light jostle on his shoulder, and he opens his eyes to see Kaoru delicately holding a spoonful of the soup he made.Â
He opens his mouth in acceptance, brain oscillating between feeling pathetic and enjoying the pampering. The soup is delicious, as expected of a talented cook like Kaoru, made even better by the fact that Rei didnât have to do anything but sit while he was mother-henned.Â
When heâs done, it seems that itâs Koga's turn to fuss over him, because as Kaoru stands up, taking the folding tray with him, he takes his place. He begins taking things out of the convenience store bag. Over-the-counter fever reducer, cough medicine, lozenges, tissues, cold packs, masks, an electrolyte drinkâŚ
âAt this rate weâre not going to have any unit budget left for our next live show,â Rei remarks, punctuating it with a sniff.Â
âHakaze-senpai gave me some cash,â Koga says matter-of-factly. âItâs one of the benefits of being in a unit with a buncha rich guys.âÂ
Screwing off the cap of the drink he got, Koga insists it upon Rei, who truly has no choice but to bend to his whims. At first, Koga attempts to do something similar to what Kaoru and Adonis had done, coddling him the way they had, but heâs far too forceful, and Rei ends up taking the bottle from him to drink his electrolytes on his own before Koga ends up choking him.Â
He sees Koga pout out of the corner of his eye. Itâs incredibly endearing. Kaoru seems to think so as well, because he grins at him and goes to ruffle his hair before Koga swats his hand away.Â
Adonis grabs the cough medicine and fever reducer, and gingerly opens the packets, sorting out the correct amount of each medicine for Rei to take. He hands them to him, and Rei uses the last of his drink to swallow them. Theyâre like a well-oiled machine in the dedication they have to taking care of him.
âWell then,â Rei says as he finishes, voice sounding marginally better now that heâs drunk something. âThank you all for attending to me. You donât need to stay with me all day, Iâll be fine on my own from here.â He shimmies himself back down into his bed, to prove to them he plans on sleeping now.Â
Not a single one of them looks like they believe him. If anything, the dismissal seems to concern them even more.Â
âWeâre not leavinâ,â Koga says, circling over to the other side of Reiâs bed. âYa lost yer privilege to be alone when yer sick. Weâre staying with ya until weâre convinced ya wonât die. Or accidentally kill yerself.â He flops onto the bed and beckons Adonis over, âCâmere.âÂ
Adonis does so immediately, coming over and slotting himself against Kogaâs side like a puzzle piece. He looks over to see where Kaoru went, and finds that heâs pursuing Reiâs bookshelf, looking for something interesting. Their tastes in novels are as different as could be, and in the absence of any romance light novels, he chooses The Brothers Karamazov, which will surely be a fascinating discussion between the two of them if he finishes it.Â
Entertainment decided, Kaoru crawls down the middle of the bed, settling himself between Rei, and Koga and Adonisâ sea otter-esque entanglement. He opens the book, fixes his hand on top of Reiâs head and begins petting his hair.Â
Itâs all more than he deserves. âYouâll all get sickâŚâ Rei protests weakly, a last ditch effort to get them to leave him, despite the contentment he feels.
âShhh,â Kaoru hushes, not even looking at him. âJust go to sleep, Rei-kun. We arenât going anywhere.âÂ
Too tired to protest, Rei gives in, pressing his head into Kaoruâs side.Â
What did I ever do to deserve them, is his final thought before he hazily falls into a dreamless sleep.
There is one thing the Exhibition is known for in particular: since 199X, every single person or group who had ever tried to pull off a heist there had gotten caught, and was later arrested after the fact. The place is infamous within their circles; those who don masks and have a flair for the dramatic; for being a total death sentence for any phantom thief, or any thief at all, who even attempted anything there. It was something that the administration took great pride in, that no thief had ever been successful in stealing from them.
If Kaoru could pull off what he came to do tonight, it would cement him as the greatest thief alive.
ââââââ ⥠âââââââ
my reikao phantom thief/painting fic that i posted for reikao week and never uploaded to tumblr... oopsyyyyy
âAlarm systems are down, cameras are frozen, and Ooâ I mean, Vulparia, took care of all the on-site security. You have about twenty minutes to get in and get out. Maybe even less. Good luck~!â
Kaoru can almost hear Kogaâs eyeroll over the comm. âWould it kill ya to make sure you donât accidentally get me arrested. There always could be someone listeninâ to our comms.âÂ
âThere isnât,â Yuta says bluntly, a stark contrast to his twinâs lax attitude surrounding the whole heist thing. âWe would know if there was. Besides, they donât even know weâre even here yet. That being said, Foxglove, I can see you havenât moved yet⌠Hurry.â
Kaoru lets out an airy laugh at Yutaâs insistence. âI know, I know~! I was just taking a moment to take it all in.â To support his statement, he inhales a calming breath of air. He looks out over the sweeping cityscape. Kaoru would never admit it aloud, but the weight of this specific job is starting to get to him.Â
Currently, Kaoru stands atop the skylight of the National Exhibition of Art in the city of Bucharest, Romania. Itâs entirely different from the electric neon skyline of Tokyo. Its architecture looks as if it were from multiple different erasâ medieval historic buildings, modern skyscrapers, and a sprawling mix of buildings that intermingles both art nouveau and art deco into its cityscape. The diverse collection of different styles is charming, he thinks to himself.Â
Far off in the distance, Kaoru can hear the sound of the night life scene of Lipscani. They wonât notice him, or pay attention to him if they did, being too far gone on alcohol to care. If he listens hard enough itâs almost like he has an audience. He closes his eyes and exhales; an attempt to release his nerves and let the wind carry them away into the city.
âYou can take it all in on your way out of the buildinâ. Wait any longer and we're gonna miss our chance.â Koga grumbles. âYou of all people know how important this one is.â
And Kaoru does know. The National Exhibition is not in any way any more remarkable than any other museum heâs stolen from in the past. To Kaoru, who has no real personal stake in the world of fine art outside of the thrill he got from taking it in grand fashion, its selection of art is diverse and beautiful, an array of multiple different styles and cultures. But to critics? The collection is far more modest than some of the more well-renowned museums even just within Romania. Itâs also noted to be eclectic, as if, in the words of certain snobby museum connoisseurs, the curator âhad no vision behind the gathering of material.â
However, there is one thing the Exhibition is known for in particular: since 199X, every single person or group who had ever tried to pull off a heist there had gotten caught, and was later arrested after the fact. The place is infamous within their circles; those who don masks and have a flair for the dramatic; for being a total death sentence for any phantom thief, or any thief at all, who even attempted anything there. It was something that the administration took great pride in, that no thief had ever been successful in stealing from them.Â
No one had ever been able to crack the code on how exactly the museum always figured out that they were being robbed, but they always did, every time, without fail. The weirder partâ the museum never had this reputation prior to around 199X. There have been five attempts since then. Not a single one has been successful, and the story goes about the same way every time: the thief gets away, they make off with whatever it was that they took, but they never make it far. Their identity is always somehow discovered by the museum administration, and theyâre always eventually tracked down and arrested.Â
The thought sends a shudder down Kaoruâs back. It certainly is a huge risk to rob a museum with such a daunting reputation, but heâs confident that of all people, he can pull it off. His masked face has already been plastered across wanted posters internationally. Bulbs of Digitalis purpurea , commonly known as foxglove, had become a calling card synonymous with his presence, thus earning him his name as intended.Â
Heâs trying not to worry too much. Hinata and Yuta had assured him that they had things under control. In fact, they had even noted how old and outdated the Exhibitionâs security system was. âItâs as if it hasnât been upgraded since⌠Iâd say⌠maybe around 201X? It was reallyyyy~ easy to get into this thing and trick it into thinking weâre the administrator,â Hinata had said laxly.Â
âThe last heist attempt was around then,â Koga had added. âHave they seriously not upgraded it since?â Â
âIf they havenât, then that's better for us, but we shouldnât let our guard down just yet,â Yuta chimed in. âIt could all just be a red herring. If it were really this simple, someoneâs attempt would have been successful by now. We canât let our guard down and just assume itâll be easy just because it looks like it will be. The Exhibition definitely has other tricks up their sleeves, we just need to pinpoint what they are.â
The four of them had spent the better part of a year scoping the place out. Theyâd come to find out through the twinsâ meticulous datamining that the museum had a whole other underground security system, much more sophisticated than their surface level one. The cameras were better hidden, and the alarm system was completely silent and so undetectable that you wouldn't even know you had tripped it until it was too late. It took months to get inside and slowly disable it without raising any eyebrows, but eventually, they did it. They had successfully infiltrated the impenetrable wall that was the security system of some random B-tier museum in Romania.
Theyâd spent another month doing whatever undercover searching they could to see if there could possibly be another security measure they missed. Despite the high defense around the secondary system, Hinata and Yuta both noted that the security system they uncovered was⌠fairly standard. Much more modern than their surface level one, but still, about the same as any other museum. It was strange. Why bother going to such lengths to hide such a basic system? Still, the search came up with nothing. Every protective layer in the Exhibition Gallery had been broken through, and they were defenseless. The time was now.
If Kaoru could pull off what he came to do tonight, it would cement him as the greatest thief alive.Â
Kaoru makes not a single sound as he drops onto the floor of the museum's main hall, dusting off his blazer. âThe eagle has landed~ â he whispers happily into his ear piece.Â
âGod, youâre so fuckinâ corny.â Koga huffs into his microphone.
Attempting to play off his nerves, Kaoru quietly laughs. âJust trying to keep things light, Koga-kun.â
Turning on his heel, Kaoru begins his stealth expedition to the impressionism exhibit where their target hangs. Claude Monetâs â Camille â , a life sized portrait of the esteemed painterâs wife and life long muse. They had figured, hey, go big or go home. It is by far the Exhibitionâs greatest pull, being one of Monetâs more famous paintings. Depicting the painterâs future wife in a green and black striped silk dress over a black jacket trimmed with fur, apparently itâs best known for its use of color and movement of the dress⌠or something. Kaoru had done his research over the past couple months, and he personally much prefers Monetâs more intimate pieces of Camille. Still, itâs obvious how much he adored her from the way he depicted her.Â
Managing to steal anything from the museum would be a feat within itself, but stealing Camille was the boldest move. To steal her and also slight the museum administration? The notoriety and infamy that would come with pulling that off?
Itâs a temptation simply too irresistible to refuse.
Koga had already done his half of the plan, going through and clearing out all the on site security. It was fairly minimal, being only a team of around six men whom Koga had described as âfuckinâ idiots.â It seems the museum administration had put all their eggs in the figurative basket of their secondary security system. Perfect.
Still, Kaoru goes about his route with the same care he would have had even if the security had not been disabled and the guards impaired. Light on his feet, he sneaks along his predetermined route. Though thereâs no one there to witness his theatrics, he performs them anyways. It would be no fun if he didnât get to tease them a little bit, even if heâs the only one who knows he's doing so.
Arriving at the entryway to the impressionism exhibit, Kaoru presses his back against the wall, taking a peek inside. He presses his finger to his ear piece. âIâm here,â he whispers. âThe eagle has landed⌠again~ âÂ
Koga lets out a sigh that is also a groan, and Kaoru can practically hear the eye roll that accompanies it. It makes him suppress a giggle.
The earpiece crackles to life with Yutaâs voice, âYouâre all good to enter, Foxglove. Be quick.â
âAnd have fun!â Hinata adds.Â
That does make Kaoru giggle, albeit as quietly as he can manage. âWill do~ â
Finally entering the room, Kaoru takes in his surroundings. Nothing has changed since his last trip to the museum to memorize the layout, which is good. It means they probably didnât suspect anything suspicious. At least, if they did, they didnât seem to find it necessary to change the layout of the exhibit. All according to plan, all according to planâŚ
The room is extremely large, open and spacious with its only decor being some benches for guests to sit and admire the collection, but Kaoru always found that the paintings on the wall themselves were laid out in a somewhat disorderly fashion. They line the wall seemingly at random, ornate frames of varying sizes placed on the wall like disorganized puzzle pieces rather than a thoughtfully designed art exhibit. Though, with the way they were slotted together with no space wasted, Kaoru was certain that there was someone behind the scenes who had meticulously planned out the layout down to every last minute detail.Â
The layout made it so that every time Kaoru had returned to reassess the place, a new painting caught his eye. He wasnât sure if that was the intended effect, and it was admittedly a little overwhelming to his senses, but Kaoru can admit that it probably made it fun for real art history nerds to come back on multiple occasions and find something new to appreciate each visit.Â
For him, howeverâŚ
There was one painting that had consistently drawn his attention every time he had revisited the museum. Itâs on the same back wall that holds Camille, lingering inconspicuously towards her right. It depicts a man dressed in a princely blue and white tailored suit with gold accents that Kaoru has overheard passing wannabe art historians say isnât indicative of any defined era. Heâs splayed out on a bed of white and yellow roses, and surrounded by picture frames just as embellished as the one around the painting itself. His right hand toys with a strand of hair languidly, the left one gently holds two yellow roses close to his chest, and he makes direct eye contact with the viewer, gaze inviting them to take him in. Kaoru is almost inclined to describe the look he's giving as bedroom eyes if he werenât so self-conscious of how that would sound coming from him.
What really intrigues Kaoru about said painting is the plaque next to it.
Unknown Artist
In the Blink of an Eyeâ ExhibitionÂ
Unknown Year
Oil on canvas
Extremely vague, no further elaboration beyond that. No blurb or description, no year, no artist to attribute the work to. Only a title, and an enigmatic one at that. Without any explanation, it doesnât do much but confuse whatever patron decided to give it a passing glance. Most donât even really bother with it; when you have a Claude Monet original to look at right next to it, who would? Anyone that did only bothered to comment on the attractiveness of the portraitâs subject. Which, again, Kaoru could acknowledge, but not relate to.
It almost made Kaoru feel bad for⌠it. The painting. The lack of care people gave it wasnât unjustified given the lack of information, but it only made him more curious about its origin. Heâd overheard others wonder the same thing, though most shrugged it off and moved along to whatever caught their eyes next, paintings with more clear-cut stories. He just⌠he just thinks it's a shame. Surely the artist didnât paint this piece for it to be so transient in people's minds. The man in the portraitâs intense eyes demand attention, yet in a room full of beautiful paintings, heâs barely afforded anything more than a slight ogling. It makes Kaoru, ever the romantic, pity it.
Kaoru had never really been much of a fine art fan the way one might expect him to be, considering his line of work. But this painting, this man and the treatment heâs given from the viewing public makes Kaoru wonder if the title became something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Despite the complicated feelings the painting conjures, it is not tonight's target. Kaoru had briefly considered the idea, searching the piece online one sleepless night, only to find no formal record on it. Not even the museum itself had any sort of acknowledgement of its existence online, and the only thing about it Kaoru could find were forum posts filled with a handful of past visitors who had also been curious and charmed by The Exhibitionistâ the name given to the man in the painting by his niche fanbase. None of them cared to speculate on the value of the painting, which was all Kaoru was interested in.Â
âWe meet again~ â Kaoru says in a low voice, mindful that he still needs to be quiet. Playfully, he winks at The Exhibitionist. âSorry, I donât really swing that way. Iâm more into older girls,â he teases, glancing at Camille as he says it.
His comm crackles to life. âCan you quit fuckinâ around?â Koga says at the same time that Hinata begins to add something about how the real life Camille Doncieux was only around nineteen years old when âCamille in the Green Dressâ was painted.
Kaoru rolls his eyes. âYeah, well, sheâs been dead for like, over a hundred years! So she's old for me!â Looking back at Camille, he adds, âNot that thatâs a problem!â
Koga groans. âIâm gonna wake one of these guards back up and tell him to go get you so he can lock you up.â
âLove you too~ â Kaoru sing-songs as he taps his earpiece to mute himself.Â
âAlone at lastâŚâ he whispers to Camille, unable to resist getting one last joke in. Satisfied with himself, he stops wasting time. Pulling his jacket open, Kaoru begins to pull out everything heâll need to free Camille of her fancy prison.
âDonât worry, beautiful, once I get you out of here, youâll be safe with my friends and me,â he says idly as he approaches her, laser pen ready to cut through the glass that protects her.Â
âOhoho⌠Is it not considered rude these days to abduct a lady from her home?â a disembodied voice rings, echoing throughout the room.
Kaoru goes very, very still as his blood runs completely cold. Every hair on his body stands on end as he tries to process what he just heard.
âMight I suggest asking her out for dinner first? It would be quite hard to say no to a handsome gentleman such as yourself,â the voice purrs. Itâs speaking fluent, albeit long outdated, Japanese.
There was someone in this room with him. Someone who knew he specifically would be here.
Coming to his senses, Kaoru whips his head around and swiftly draws his handgun Koga had insisted he carried, readying his finger to pull the trigger to save himself.Â
Kaoru had really hoped that heâd never run into a situation where he would be forced to use it. He enjoys the rush of stealing, but harming someone is a whole other thing. Unfortunately, it seems Kaoruâs luck has finally run out. He does his best to will his hands to stop trembling as he holds the gun the way Koga taught him to.
He doesnât say anything in response to the voice, not wanting to give up any potential leverage he may have. Like a leopard, he slowly stalks forward, looking for any signs of life.
Though, as Kaoruâs eyes scan the exhibit, thereâs no movement or misplaced shadows, no sound⌠Nobody. Itâs like the voice had come from a completely incorporeal source.
âYou know,â the voice pipes back up again, âas far as I can tell, the safety of your gun is not currently switched off.â
Kaoru cringes, switching the safety off. He feels his heartbeat in his ears as he shifts the gun to his left hand and presses a shaking finger against his earpiece.
âSylvatica?â
Yutaâs voice crackles to life. âWhatâs up?â
âCan you do a heat signature scan for me?â
Yuta makes a noise of confusion. âEh? Why? Iâm absolutely positive there's no one in there with you right now.â
He hears another line open as Hinata joins the conversation, âIs something wrong, Foxglove?â
Kaoru takes a deep breath, trying to control his uneasy heart rate. âI heard a voice. I know I did. I think there's someone in here with me.â
âA voice?â Hinata asks.
A few seconds of typing, and then, âThatâs not possible,â Yuta said, his befuddlement palpable. âThere's nobody else in there, the scan says youâre completely aloneâ â
âYou know, dear thief, they say it's considered rude to ignore someone right in front of you to have a conversation on the telephone.â
Kaoru jumps in surprise, years of stealth experience kicking in as he lands soundlessly like a cat.
âHakâ Foxglove?!â
âAh, do you mind taking that thing out, dear thief? Iâd like to have a conversation with you.â
Kaoruâs eyes rapidly jump from corner to corner as he points his gun wildly in every direction. Finally losing it, Kaoru snaps. âWho's there?â he whisper-yells. âWhere are you?!â
The voice makes a tsk sound. âAnd here I thought I had caught your gaze lingering on me as you entered⌠Such a shame I am but a fleeting aesthetic pleasure to you.â
Kaoruâs face scrunches in confusion as he processes what was just said to him. It takes him a second, but a feeling of disbelief washes over him as he comes to the only possible conclusion. It wouldnât make an ounce of sense, but itâs the only answer he can think of. Slowly, a part of him expecting to be wrong, he looks up at the painting of the beautiful man adorned in yellow roses.
As he looks up, Kaoruâs stomach drops at the realization that the man depicted in the painting is most certainly not in the same position he was in when he had entered the room. Now, rather than lying languidly amongst his roses and frames, heâs sitting up on his hip and balancing himself with his hands.
The most horrifying part is that the painting⌠is moving . The man toys with a strand of his hair. Kaoruâs eyes shake as he notes how the brush strokes of the painting seem to bend and redirect themselves to aid the motion, almost as if the action were animated frame by frame.
At the sight of the way it had petrified Kaoru in both shock and fear, the painting frowns. It moves in real time, painted shadows shifting to accommodate the motion.
What the fuck.
âDo not be so alarmed, dear thief,â the painting comforts. âI only wish to speak with you.â
â Hakaze-senpai?! â Yuta says urgently, dropping his false name completely. âIs everything alright? Do you need us to get you out of there?â
Recovering from his shock, Kaoru slowly brings his shaking hand to his ear piece. âEâ everything is fine. It was a false alarm,â he manages to stutter out. âJust a slight⌠complication.â
âYour voice is shaking and you went completely silent on us. What kind of âslight complicationâ waâ âÂ
Kaoru rips out his ear piece. This is something he would never do under normal circumstances, knowing that Hinata and Yuta acted as his spotters who would aid him from afar if he needed them. However, it seems that this heist is starting to look like anything but normal. He observes the painting, which smiles in satisfaction at him as it watches Kaoru listen to his request.
âNow that we are in private⌠Hello.â The paintingâs smile deepens, a mysterious gleam in its eye as it looks at Kaoru. Itâs strange to be able to watch as such clear emotions are depicted on the face of someone two-dimensional. Seeing the colors and shadows of its face changing literally right in front of him makes the painting seem more expressive than even an actual person.
â... Hi?â Kaoru replies, recovering from the shock at the odd remark. Hello? Thatâs what itâ he â had to say?
âI apologize. You must be terribly confused at the moment⌠Although, your break in was quite impressive. Perhaps you have seen other paintings who can move? Judging by your reaction, though, I wouldnât think that to be the case.âÂ
Kaoru blinks slowly at him. âNo⌠No, this is a first for me.â
The painting leans forward in interest. âIâm afraid we donât have much time. Do you have a name?â
â... Not one Iâd ever share willingly.âÂ
The painting chuckles at that. âThatâs fair, I suppose. You are meant to be committing an illegal act, after all.â
Putting a gentle hand over his chest, the man in the painting leans forward in a subtle bow. âMy name is Rei. Sakuma Rei.â He says his name as if itâs an affirmation, rather than something he is regularly called by. âIt is a pleasure to finally meet you, dear thief.â
Despite the painting putting on the charm, Kaoru rolls his eyes. âDo you say that to every phantom thief who comes through the door?â he chastises.Â
The paintingâ Reiâ shrugs. âNot all of them. Only the best of you.âÂ
Kaoru scoffs. âAnd how many has that been, exactly?â
Rei pretends to ponder the question for a moment. âJust you, dear thief. Iâve already determined youâre the only one that's ever been worthy of my commendation~ â
â... Whatever,â Kaoru mutters, discomfort settling in his chest. âI doubt youâve even seen one in a while. This place has quiteeee the reputation you know.â
Rei hums. âDoes it?âÂ
Kaoru can tell from the tone of his voice that Rei is feigning ignorance. It annoys him. âIt does. Nobody who's ever tried to steal from this museum has ever gotten away with it.â
âOh myâŚâ
âYeah,â Kaoru replies, annoyed at the lack of enthusiasm. âAnd Iâm kind of trying to be the first. So do you mind if I get back to that?âÂ
An impish glint re-enters the painting's ruby red eyes. âAm I boring you, dear thief?â
Kaoru huffs. âA painting that talks and moves is anything but boring. But I came here with a job to do, and Iâm kindaaa running out of time to do it. It was reallyyyy nice to meet you, Sakuma-san, but I have to get moving.â
He turns on his heel, walking away and putting his earpiece back in. Slotting it back into his ear, he taps it to reinitiate the connection. âSorry guys, Iâ â
âIt appears you have not yet put two and two together, dear thief.â Reiâs voice booms from behind him, much louder than Kaoru had assumed he could get, sending chills down his spine. It makes him remove his finger from the earpiece in shock.
âWhat was that?!â Hinata and Yuta both exclaim in unison. Kaoru tugs his earpiece out again so he can listen. Theyâll worry, but he canât focus with their voices in his ear.
âYou seem wiser than those who came before you. Iâm sure you and your friends must have dissected every news report, police report, interview, testimonyâ everything.â With his back turned, Kaoru canât see the mischievous smile on his face, but he can hear it in his voice. âIâm sure you all took every precaution necessary to make sure you would not make the same mistakes as them.â
Kaoru turns back towards Rei, only to see that Rei seems to have gotten as close as possible. His face is now extremely close, and it breaks Kaoruâs brain a little bit to watch as Rei seems to bend reality to change the perspective of his painting.
Rei backs up, sighing dramatically. âHowever, it seems you have made a most fatal mistake.âÂ
âI imagine that in every report, it is mentioned that the heist committed by the criminals was actually successful in most cases, until the museum itself discovered some sort of damning evidence that always directly linked a suspect to the crime. I imagine you and your friends must have naively assumed that you would not make such a foolish mistake. But Iâd like to propose to you a new questionâŚ
â...knowing what you know now, would it be possible for you to consider moreâŚÂ abstract answers to the question of why this museum in particular has never been able to successfully be stolen from?â
Kaoruâs blood goes cold and he feels his heart sink to the floor. Fuck.
Despite the mask covering his face, Rei must be able to see how this information has affected Kaoruâs demeanor, as his casual smile suddenly turns into something more like a Cheshire grin. âIâm sorry to disappoint you, dear thief. Itâs simply why Iâm here.â
Kaoru has been stealing as a phantom thief for the majority of his young adult life, and he has never been caught. He has never so much even been a suspect in any of his heists, despite the name Foxglove being well-known amongst the press. In his line of work, this means he is very good at his job, especially with some of the things he has managed to obtain in his career. Priceless jewels, artifacts, paintings⌠And never once had he ever been nervous about getting caught. Heâs good at what he does and he knows it.
But this⌠This situation is something that no thief, no normal person could ever have accounted for. An out-of-place painting in the museum he is currently attempting to rob is sentient and apparently snitching on anyone who dares to attempt a burglary. It sounds stupid when he lays it out for himself like that.
One of the primary reasons Kaoru has gotten this far is because he knows when to walk away, and now seems like the perfect time to do just that. He would still be absolutely fucked, but at least he wouldnât have taken anything and would only be charged with breaking and entering, which he could maybe get off for⌠If he didnât have such an extensive laundry list of past offenses from all his past heists, and one of the most recognizable names in the media and the world of phantom thieves. It hits Kaoru all at once just how screwed they all are.
Okay, forget this place. Forget the notoriety he would gain from successfully completing this job. It evidently isnât happening and he might as well save himself while he can. He needs to go find Koga and tell him that the job is off andâÂ
Kaoru moves to make a dash to the area of the museum where he knows Koga is keeping watch; if they have one sentient painting, then they may have another or many others who are on the lookout for sticky-fingered theives. Maybe thatâs why he hasnât heard from Koga in a while. From experience, he imagines they donât have much time before someone starts to realize whatâs happening and the police show up anyways, and with the new knowledge of a painting that is planning on ratting him out, Kaoru doesnât exactly know what the timeline for the conclusion of this job is looking like. Maybe if he acts fast, he can at least get Koga out of this.
âWait,â he hears from behind him as he begins to frantically make his way towards the exit.Â
âNope. No,â Kaoru says decisively. âI donât want to hear it. Iâm already screwed enough as isâ â
âAs previously stated,â Rei interrupts, âyou seem smarter than those who came before you. Prettier, as well. So I have an offer for you. One that will surely benefit us both.â
Kaoru stops, letting out a frustrated huff. âWhat could you possibly offer mâ â
âTake me with you.â
For a second time tonight, Kaoru is thrown for a loop. âHuh?â
âSteal me. This is the deal I am offering to you: you steal me, and I am finally allowed to leave behind this wretchedly boring life of observing and being observed, and you donât get caught, as there is no one to alert the museum higher ups of the identity of the intruder.â Rei waves his hand casually. âIt seems like a win-win situation, no?â
Slowly, and against his better judgment, Kaoru walks back to where Rei hangs. He still has the casual smile plastered on his face, though Kaoru canât really read his eyes anymore, like Reiâs no longer allowing him to. Kaoru has seen a lot of paintings in a lot of different museums all over the world, and heâs never seen one with an expression so unknowable. Itâs a little uncanny.
Seeing Kaoru thinking it over, Rei continues his persuasion. âIâm aware that I am not as lucrative a prize as the piece you came here in an attempt to obtain, but I imagine that something is better than nothing and being imprisonedâŚâ
Well. He does have a point there. Â
Running out of time and not having a better idea, Kaoru puts his ear piece back in. âErm, Linnaea, Sylvatica?â
âHaâ Foxglove! What happened, the camera feeds are still off so I donâtâ â
He looks over at Rei and holds eye contact with him, glaring into his ruby red eyes. âChange of plans. Weâre not bringing home Camille tonight.â
The paintingâs face shifts into a satisfied grin.
âWhat?!â Hinata joins Yuta to exclaim.
âHakaze-senpai, youâre scaring us. We all agreed on Camille! You were the one who insisted it had to be the most famous one! Whatâs going on?!â
âIâll⌠Iâll explainâ or like, show you guys later. See you soon, get ready to leave quickly.âÂ
â...â Back in the inconspicuous van they use as a command center, Hinata and Yuta sense theyâre not getting a more concrete answer than that, and time is of the essence. So they give each other a nod, and both focus back on the task at hand. âAll right. Currently routing your escape to be able to meet up with Vulparia. Weâll see you shortly.â
With his team slightly clued in, Kaoru then moves to the wall Reiâs frame is resting on.Â
âMy, even more beautiful up close. Even with the mask~ â Rei flirts. âThough, with how much youâve stared at me in the past, Iâve gotten quite good views of you without it.â
âCan you please not make this weird?â Kaoru asks, though not really acknowledging this; the whole thing is weird. The painting flirting with him is only about a 0.2% uptick in weirdness.
Reiâs eyes seem to suggest he got a kick out of that. âAs you wish.â
Kaoru rolls his eyes. Examining Reiâs frame, itâs just about a meter long and probably around fifty to sixty centimeters tall. He pauses. âIs it going to like, hurt you or something if I take you out of the frame and roll you up?â
Rei seems to ponder this. âNo; however, it certainly wouldnât be appreciated. It seems Iâm well within your capacity to carry as is, no?â he says matter-of-factly.
Kaoru glares at him. âDo you understand how this works at all?! I need to get you out discreetly . I canât just carry you out of the building still in your frame, you're too big.â
Reiâs face melts into something playful. âMy, I havenât heard a man say something like that to me in years ~ â
So not only is he being blackmailed to steal a painting he doesnât want to, by the painting itself, but said painting is also a weird pervert. Great.Â
Resisting the urge to let out a guttural groan of frustration at the turn this night had taken, Kaoru decisively flips Rei over and begins attempting to remove him from the frame.
He hears the man in the painting sigh, âSuch a shame. They made this frame specially for me, you know?âÂ
âI really donât care,â Kaoru whispers. In his head, having accepted whatâs happening, heâs now mourning the notoriety his name would have gained if he had managed to steal Camille. With its size, it wouldâve been harder to execute. He would have had to take her off the wall, pull the painting out as gently as possible, roll her up, get the frame back on the wall, and then get out, all within about ten minutes before anyone could even realize what was going on. Sheâs definitely more secure than Rei is, and Kaoru was looking forward to having to deal with any sort of extra safety or security measures on the fly.
It was supposed to be part of the fun of the night; people were going to wonder how he even got the huge thing out of the museum so inconspicuously, and in such a short time frame. Media speculation would have gone on for weeks. Thousands of cute girls would have had his name on the tips of their tongues once again, the picturesque image of a suave gentleman thief. A random, unrenowned piece, omitted from any sort of official gallery highlights list only gets him the points for having been able to get into the museum in the first place and take it. He doubts theyâd even really wonder how he got it out of the building with how averagely sized it is. Given that Rei is the backbone of their security system, Kaoru wonders if theyâd even alert the media at all. The thought makes him pout.
Reiâs frame really isnât safeguarded at all, only being tacked into place behind a standard moisture barrier. Itâs childâs play to remove compared to some of the stuff Kaoru has done in his storied career. He pulls a screwdriver out of his jacket and makes quick work out of unscrewing the eight mending plates holding it in place. From there, he pops up the backing layer and carefully takes Rei out, flipping him over in the process.
âHello, my dear thief,â Rei greets, waving at him. Seeing him move up close only makes the entire thing make less sense.
Kaoru sticks his nose up. âI have nothing more to say to you.â
Rei sulks at him, crimson eyes somehow looking wet, accentuated with more prominent white highlights. âDonât be like that, Kaoru-kunâŚâ
For what seems like the hundredth time tonight, Kaoru feels lightheaded. Sighing deeply, he looks up at the ceiling in defeat. âHow do you know my name?â he asks, though the answer hardly matters to him by now.
He can still hear the smile in Reiâs voice, though. âYou gave it to a very lovely young woman one of the many times you came to visit me~!â
Kaoru blinks, processing. âI wasnât visiting you, I was here to seeâ â He gasps in sudden realization, âDoes that mean you knew I was going to be here?!â
âWellâŚâ Rei hesitates, at least having the decency to look guilty. âYou seemed to be here so often that I maybe⌠had my suspicions...â
âDoes anyone else know Iâm here right now?â Kaoru growls at him.Â
âNo, I made sure to keep it under wraps~ â Rei says cheerfully, dropping the act. The sudden shift from the enigmatic demeanor five minutes ago to this jovial one he was playing now, after getting what he wanted, only serves to get on Kaoruâs nerves even more.
âThe heads of the museum trust my judgement completely. With how often you were here, I suspected you were possibly planning a heist. Of course, students of the arts tend to frequent the museum more often than the average patron, most of whom are tourists, but I always noticed you seemed to care more about the security of both the room itself and of dear Camille over there, which is what led me to the conclusion that you were a thief. However, I also noticed that I was the only piece you paid attention to with any sort of genuine consideration. Somehow, I seemed to have caught your wandering eye each time you visited. I was flattered, really~ From there it was just a matter of waiting for you to show up. I felt like a princess locked up in a tower waiting for my knight in shining armorâŚâ he finishes wistfully.Â
To himself, Kaoru wonders why Rei chose him specifically to blackmail. If heâs the reason that thieves kept getting busted at this museum, then couldnât he have done this whole blackmail song and dance at any point in the past? Kaoru suspects that Rei is hiding his genuine reasoning from him, but at the moment, he canât find it within himself to care. Heâll probably get a chance to ask him later, as long as they donât get caught because Rei wonât shut up.
He sighs again, that being all he can do at this point. âAll right, whatever. Weâre running out of time.â Kaoru slings the transport tube over his shoulder, moving to roll Rei up.
âKaoru-kun⌠please donât⌠we can talk about thisâŚâ Rei begs, looking at him with those same soggy eyes as before.
Kaoru scowls at him. âI think youâve said enough,â he says, feeling smug knowing he finally has some leverage over Rei.Â
He hears Rei begin to say something, but Kaoru hastily rolls him up so he wonât have to hear whatever it is. Through the thick canvas, he sounds muffled to the point that his words are unintelligible. Kaoru grins. Â
Plopping Rei into the tube and capping it, he chuckles. âI think I like you better like this~ â Now, Kaoru canât hear anything at all.
He really is running out of time though, so now that Rei has been dealt with, he focuses back on the task at hand. He throws the strap of the tube back over his shoulder and promptly begins to put the frame back together, screwing the mending plates in with nimble precision.
Once finished, Kaoru rehangs the frame, now missing its inhabitant. It brings him little satisfaction when Camille is still there, her coy posture now feeling ironically as though it were mocking him.
The final step is to leave his calling card, which does at least spark some joy. He pulls it out of his jacket; a vial with a few real foxglove bulbs. Theyâre only toxic when ingested, which does slightly dampen what he was going for by choosing a poisonous flower for his namesake, but it's the thought that counts.Â
Kaoru never sticks to one specific color of the flower, but for this heist, the bulb is a bright canary yellow. Embarrassing, but it was meant to match the roses painted alongside The Exhibitionist. It was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but itâs now too literal for Kaoruâs liking. At least Rei hadnât seen them.Â
He gently places the vial on the ground, positioning it so it would look dramatic in her shadow. Job done, now itâs time for his grand escape.
Kaoru dashes back to the main hall, footsteps lissom, and spots the open skylight he had entered from. He moves towards it, finally putting his earpiece back in as he does so.Â
âSorry about all that before,â Kaoru starts, putting back on his frivolous persona. âIâm leaving now, is Vulparia ready to go?âÂ
Koga, for the first time in quite a while, Kaoru realizes, finally speaks up, âI hadâta go back early. Youâre gonna haveâta get yourself outta this one, Foxglove.âÂ
Kaoru clicks his tongue. âUgh, are you serious?â He says it while already prepping his grappling device, launching its rope extension with practiced precision at the opening. âIâll have you know, I have had quiteee the night with this one. I really donât need these extra obstacles right now, Wan-chan~ â
Heâs exaggerating how big an inconvenience it is, because he knows it will rile Koga up, and riling Koga up always makes Kaoru feel just a little bit better about his failure.Â
And it does. â Youâve had a bad night? Wait âtil you see what fuckinâ happened to me ! And I told you to stop callinâ me that when we're workinâ!âÂ
Kaoru activates his grappling device, the rope retracting towards where he had aimed it and pulling him forward. Upon arriving at the top, he grabs hold of the edge, hikes his leg onto the adjacent panel, and uses all his upper body strength to haul himself onto the ledge, careful not to get any of his DNA on the glass.Â
Dusting himself off, Kaoru pushes the button on his earpiece to reply, âDid you get hurt or something? Did one of those big mean guards wake back up and try to arrest you ~ âÂ
âI fuckinâ did actually, asshole,â Koga sneers, and Kaoru instantly feels bad for teasing him. âThey had an extra guard we didnât know about. The bastard snuck up on me.â
âOh shit,â Kaoru says. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine enough. Itâs all stuff thatâll heal.â A pause. âWouldâve been nice if youâd responded when I said somethinâ, but I handled it.âÂ
Damn. That must have been during the period where he had his earpiece out, and Rei was threatening him. âSorry, Wan-chan, I was a little preoccupied.â
â Tch ,â Koga says, obviously miffed. âJust get back here with Camille and Iâll feel better.â
â... Right.â Kaoru doesn't have the heart to tell poor injured Koga that the dream of obtaining Camille had died about ten minutes ago. Given their lack of response, neither did Hinata or Yuta. â... See you in a few! Linnaea, Sylvatica, are you guys both ready to get me out of here?â
After receiving an affirmative, he ends the conversation with that. He dislodges the head of his grappling device from where it had stuck, and moves the glass panel back into place. Making sure his prize of the night is secure on his back, Kaoru sprints off along the rooftops and into the night.
Kaoru ditches his costume after arriving at the planned changing site, an alley only somewhat nearby where they had parked the van Hinata and Yuta were operating out of, planned so that heâd be out of view of anyone or anything. Thereâs a backpack waiting for him there, big enough that he can conceal the tube as well as his outfit.
Now back in civilian clothes, Kaoru does his best to look as though he has business on the empty streets of Bucharest at three in the morning. The area theyâd selected was mostly discreet side streets, and Hinata and Yuta should have frozen all the security cameras within a five block radius, allowing him to quietly disappear.Â
He walks in a self-assured manner, just in case there is anyone potentially watching him. After finding his way back to the van, he knocks on the back door in the rhythmic pattern they all agreed on. Kaoru hears the click of the door unlocking, and lets himself in.
âIâm back~ â he hums, already attempting to lighten the mood. Itâs not working, though; when Kaoru turns around heâs met with three thoroughly displeased faces. Hinata is pouting at him, Yutaâs exhausted scowl looks like itâs been permanently etched onto his face, and Koga, sporting a black eye and what looks like several other bruises that go on underneath his clothes, stares him down with hostile intent. Far worse than he had described.
âYouâre late,â Yuta says coolly. âWould you care to explain why you caused so much trouble tonight?â
Hinata nods to back up his brother. âBecause we were caught up thinking Hakaze-senpai was in trouble, we couldnât properly warn Oogami-senpai about an extra guard we hadnât anticipatedâŚâ He falters. âAnd we were also really worried about you. We thought something really bad had happenedâŚâ
Kaoruâs stomach twists at the confirmation that heâd let down his juniors. Itâs an odd feeling. Despite knowing them for a few years and forming a thieving ring with them, Kaoru has never considered himself the reliable senior type. He was only ever in this business to spite his father, satisfy his innate desire for freedom to do and go as he pleased, and pick up a few adoring fangirls on the way. Heâd always kept them somewhat at armâs length, even when they tried to know more about him personally. It was better that way, it kept everything far simpler. But watching Koga try not to wince at the slight shift of his arm makes Kaoru realize just how badly heâd failed them.Â
He decides not to linger on the feeling. It comes with too much baggage to unpack, and now isnât the moment to let them see him slipping. And so he deflects.Â
Kaoru chuckles loftily. âYou guys should know not to doubt me at this point~ â He feels like an asshole when he says it, and even worse when he sees the subtle twitch of Kogaâs good eye.Â
âWhatever,â is all that Koga says in response, resigned. Itâs so much worse than if he were mad. Kaoru couldâve worked with mad. âHinata-kun and Yuta-kun filled me in on what happened. Whatâd ya end up bringing back instead of Camille?â
Kaoru sighs. âNot something that's going to get us any sort of recognition, thatâs for sure. Iâd be surprised if they even announced it was missingâŚâ he mutters.Â
He pulls the backpack off his back, then hesitates. Up until right now, Kaoru had almost completely forgotten about the nature of⌠Rei. Well, he thinks to himself, at least I have a decent excuse for letting them down. As he pauses, he can tell that everyoneâs patience with him is wearing thin, but he doesnât exactly know how to explain the situation without coming across as totally crazy.Â
â... Before I show this to you guys, you have to promise not to freak outâŚâ he starts. Hinata tilts his head questioningly, but other than that, no one moves, committed to their agitation. Kaoru pouts. âGuys, Iâm serious, you have to promise.â
âPromise,â Yuta says flatly at the same time that Hinata says it genuinely.Â
âKoga-kun?â
Now having everyone's eyes on him, Koga sighs, âI promise,â he says, accentuated with an eyeroll. âNow hurry. Up.â
âOkay! OkayâŚâ Kaoru unscrews the cap off the tube, and braces himself as he pulls it out.Â
He takes out the canvas and unfurls it in a singular motion. Immediately, heâs met with the sound of whining, reminding him why having Rei in the tube was ideal.
âKaoru-kunâŚâ Rei sniffs. âHow could you leave me in there for so long⌠it was so dark⌠youâre a cruel, cruel man, Kaoru-kunâŚâ He sniffles again to really hammer home the point. Itâs Kaoruâs turn to roll his eyes, not bothering to dignify Rei with a response as he turns him towards the other members of his team.Â
âOh, Kaoru-kunâs confidants. How lovely,â Kaoru hears Rei say. âMy name is Sakuma Rei, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.â Rei must be adjusting his position in some way, because Kaoru watches as all their faces drop. Hinata and Yuta both sit up straight in their chairs, and KogaâŚ
âTHE FUCK?â
â Shhh! â everyone in the van says, shushing him all at once.Â
âMy, what a lively little doggy Kaoru-kun has~ âÂ
âDâ donât call me that!â Koga shouts. âWhat the hell even is this?! Are we being pranked?!âÂ
âHakaze-senpai, would you care to like⌠explain?â Yuta asks, now too baffled to even be mad.Â
Kaoru grimaces. âSakuma-san blackmailed me into taking him.â
âThat doesnât really answer my questionâŚâÂ
âI do admit, I did in fact conspire to extort Kaoru-kun. I apologize for any turmoil I caused in the process, but it was a necessary evil to achieve my goal,â Rei says solemnly. Â
âWhat does that evenâŚâ Yuta asks, trailing off.
Kaoru does the best job that he can to recount the details of what happened, leaving out any parts that arenât exactly flattering to his image, like him not realizing the handgun he carried still had the safety on. Mercifully, Rei doesnât bring it up either, allowing Kaoru to retell the story as he wants it to be heard. Kaoru can tell he considers it though, his eyes shining with a mischievous luster.Â
By the time Kaoruâs done, Koga has his arms crossed defiantly, leg bouncing, and is staring at the floor. Heâs muttering something about how this whole thing is âWeird. Itâs too fuckinâ weird.â Hinata, on the other hand, has seemingly recovered from his shock as he leans forward to get a closer look at the canvas, a curious shimmer in his eyes. He gently brushes his thumb against the canvas, right where Reiâs shoulder is. âSakuma-san, can you feel it when I touch you there?â
âHow curious you are~ â Rei says amusedly. âNo, I canât feel anything through the confines of the canvas within which I exist. Itâs a good thing too, for Kaoru-kun was not very delicate with me.â
âHow rude of him! Hakaze-senpai, you should know you need to be more careful with the art we steal,â Hinata chastises, wagging his finger at him as he does so.
âYou wouldnât be careful through him either if he did to you what he did to me! He scared me really badly, and then made me take him with me, otherwise weâd have gotten busted! Sakuma-san is the entire reason the place was so secure in the first placeâŚâÂ
âI seeâŚâ Yuta says, leaning forward in interest. âThatâs actually kind of fascinating. Howâd they even get something like this in the first place?âÂ
âWho cares! Itâs a liability! If itâs been tellinâ the museum whoâs tryinâ to steal from them this whole time, whoâs to say this isnât some scheme on behalf of the museum,â Koga snaps. âPlus, itâs fuckinâ freaky.â
âYou wound me, Kaoru-kunâs doggy; itâs not as if there's very much I could do in a state such as this,â Rei sighs. âThough I still look and talk as one, do you not consider me to be a âpersonâ?â
Koga hesitates for a moment â...Are you one? A person?â he asks, phrased as a genuine question.Â
The question lingers. Rei doesnât immediately respond. It occurs to Kaoru that when he was caught up in the chaos of the night, he had never really bothered to ask the questions of how or why Rei⌠was. His existence was entirely illogical no matter how he came to be, but what even was he? Was this like, ghostly or demonic possession? Kaoru really hopes it isnât. The thought of having brought a spirit into his life is almost enough to make him physically shudder. He hopes it's something more friendly, like whatever was going on with the toys in Toy Story .
Kaoru readjusts Rei so that he can view him properly. Rei maintains the same alluring, unreadable smirk that heâd held as he laid perfectly still during the museumâs daytime hours. It must come as naturally to him as breathing. Though now, Kaoru picks up on the way it doesnât quite reach his eyes, a perceivable dullness exaggerated through a lack of any highlights.
âI was,â Rei says after a prolonged pause. âThat was a long time ago. I suppose I must concede that youâre right not to consider me as such.âÂ
âWhatâs that supposed to mean,â Koga grumbles.Â
Kaoru furrows his brow. âAre you trapped? ⌠Or possessed?â
Rei laughs, âNot possessed, no. Not particularly trapped either, now that youâve rescued me from my keepers,â Rei says coyly. Before anyone can challenge the non-answer, he redirects them. âAnyhow, I can assure you all that I have no means of reestablishing contact with them, and even if I was somehow able to, I would not ever attempt to. I have no intention of going back to such a pitiful life of stasis.â
âWhat exactly do you plan on doinâ then? I really donât see how you're any more free with us than in there.âÂ
âOn the contrary, doggy,â Rei says. âYou have already done me an immeasurable favor by whisking me off with you, Kaoru-kun. But I fear I must ask one more favor of you. I would like to humbly request that you please bring me along to wherever you are all off to next. I can assure you Iâd be of much use if you plan on continuing your pilfering of similar establishments.â
Kaoru frowns, âWe're not⌠âpilferingâ! This is serious business to us!â he exclaims.
Rei waves him off. âHowever you care to define it.â
âInteresting pitch,â Yuta says. âWhat would you be able to do for us?â
âOn top of the vast wealth of knowledge I possess, it would prove to be quite advantageous in your future endeavors to be assisted by something that is so intimately familiar with the environments you find yourselves looting, no? Plant me on the inside to have constant eyes on targets if you so desire. Thatâs merely one suggestion, but you all are clever children, so Iâm sure you could determine an abundance of ways to use me. If that idea doesnât please you, then Iâm also open to being your cute mascot Sakuma Rei-chan~ â âÂ
He punctuates the statement with a cutesy wink and peace sign.Â
Koga scoffs. âUgh, why would we everâ âÂ
âOkay! Iâm convinced! You can come with us, Sakuma-san!â Hinata says.
âHey! Since when did you get the final sayâ â
âI agree with Aniki. Sakuma-san poses some interesting possibilities for future jobs,â Yuta agrees.
âWhat the hell! Hakaze-senpai, back me up here!â Koga says, turning to him with a wild look in his eyes.
Kaoru glances over to Rei, the latter paying no mind to Kogaâs yapping. He's only paying attention to Kaoru, which makes him want to start squirming, feeling hot under Reiâs gaze. His smile is as mystifying as ever.Â
âKaoru-kun?â he questions. Though it isnât phrased as a plea, Kaoru canât help but interpret it as one.
⌠Despite the talk of what Rei is, if he had ever been human or something otherworldly, he was most certainly alive . Vexing as heâs been, Kaoru would feel far too guilty abandoning him, regardless of the fact that heâd be a loose end.Â
He gives Koga a sympathetic look, âSorry, Koga-kun. Itâs not exactly like we can leave him anywhereâŚâÂ
â Tch . Whatever,â Koga mutters, undercut by the Aoi twins high-fiving next to him. He gets up and jumps out the vanâs back door, wincing as the action agitates his injuries. âWeâve gotta leave soon anyways. Start preppinâ the camera route to get us outta here.âÂ
He slams the door behind him, leaving the twins snickering. âDonât pay any attention to him, Sakuma-san,â Hinata says. âHe gets cranky when we donât all agree with him.âÂ
âHeâll warm up to you eventually. Oogami-senpai is kind when you get to know him. Heâs just a bit of a tsundere ,â Yuta says snidely.
Rei chuckles. âI assumed so. I have no doubt your doggy will come around to my presence after he sniffs my hand a little.âÂ
The comment brings a smile to Kaoruâs face. Itâs the first thing heâs said all night that is actually funny.
He hands Rei over to Hinata, who immediately shifts to allow Yuta to also get a closer look. âIâll go up there and talk him down. The two of you have fun playing with Sakuma-san~ âÂ
The twins both call out affirmatively, and Kaoru turns to get out of the van. Heâs stopped by Rei calling out to him, âKaoru-kun.â
âYes, Sakuma-san?â Kaoru asks, not really sure what's even left to be said.
âThank you. I know I have caused you a significant inconvenience tonight, but I wanted to tell you that youâre a very kind person for going along with this for my sake.âÂ
Rei has shown a considerable number of sides tonight, but this sentimental tone heâs taking up is new. Who knows if itâs real or not, but Kaoru wants to believe itâs the most honest heâs been all night.Â
Blush creeps onto his face at the praise. âYâ youâre welcome. I guess,â is the only thing he can think to say in response before closing the back door undignifiedly. Heâs absolutely sure the twins are giggling about it as he walks away.
âYouâre all red,â Koga says matter-of-factly as Kaoru gets in the passenger seat.Â
âDonât worry about it,â Kaoru replies defensively, turning his face away.
Koga gives him a skeptical look, but doesnât push for more information. He pulls the stick shift and puts the van in drive, peeling off the curb. âSo, what do we plan on doing with him?â
âWellâŚâ Kaoru says, thinking. âWe should probably take him to get appraised by Adonis-kun anyway to see if he can figure anything out about him. See if he can figure out where heâs from beyond what the plaque said using like, the paint or whatever.â
Koga nods, eyes still on the road. âMakes sense.â
Kaoru looks out the window at the passing scenery of an empty Romanian side street. He thinks distantly about the cityâs buzzing night life scene. Of the nocturnal population who are all laughing, dancing, drinking, and enjoying the present moment. He thinks of Monet and Camille.
âAnd then⌠I was thinking we should try and see if we can find a way to free him.â

âLeonâs a free spirit and a lone wolf. I let him off-leash so he can get all his energy out without me gettinâ in his way,â Koga shrugged. âHeâll come back if I call him though.âÂ
Turning around to amplify his voice towards the general direction he watched him sprint in, Koga shouted, âLeon!âÂ
⌠And nothing happened. No corgi came bounding for him from any direction.

gift for @uglytsumugi12, you were my assignment for the enstars new years gift exchange 2022!! i hope you enjoy this silly little koga centric fic <3
As much as he loved him to death, even Koga could admit winter was not Leonâs best season in terms of agreeability.Â
Despite his well behaved nature, shaped by multiple years of Kogaâs meticulous training, Leon was curious in nature. It's as if he seemingly forgot how to act when temperatures dropped. He loved exploring, playing in snow, forcing Koga out into below freezing temperatures at 6am so he could go run around and get snow all over his coatâŚ
Koga sighed. He canât be annoyed with him really. Heâs the one that signed up for the responsibility of having a dog, and Leon was always worth the turmoil. Doesnât negate the fact that the streets are completely covered in ice that has yet to be salted, Koga has to be at school in two hours, and Leon is dragging him along to get to the park so he can run around off leash, and Koga has nearly slipped and ate shit about four times now.Â
âQuit tugginâ... Weâre gonna get there soon, and then you can run around all you want without nearly killinâ me, okay?â Leon had stopped momentarily to pee on someoneâs potted plant. He blinked at Koga owlishly. Koga, unamused, blinked back at him. The second he was done with his break, he darted off ahead of him, nearly pulling his arm off.
Two near death experiences and a little treat bribery later, and they finally made it to the dog park. Once there, they made it a safe distance into the park before Koga bent down to unclip Leonâs leash. Free at last, Leon dashed off into another direction, to do who knows what in the snow. Probably take a shit, Kogaâs brain supplied.Â
âOogami.âÂ
Koga nearly jumped out of his skin at the hand appearing on his shoulder. When he whipped around, his attacker revealed himself to just be Adonis, joined quietly by Souma at his side.Â
âJesus fuck, I thought I was about to be mugged. Always so damn quietâŚâÂ
âI apologize Oogami. I did not mean to sneak up on you.â
â...Sâokay. I canât really be mad when you apologize so earnestlyâŚâ
Souma, looking for an opportunity to make his presence apparent, bowed. âHello, Oogami-dono.â
âZakki, hey⌠What are you two doing out here?âÂ
Adonis smiled. âKanzaki needs to bring Kamegorou back to the marine life club for a check-up with Shinkai-senpai. We decided to take him with us while we went on our morning jog, so that we donât have to go back and get him. It ended up being more of a walk to accommodate him⌠But it was nice.âÂ
Koga looked down between the two of them and finally noticed what Souma was carrying- a small clear plastic pet carrier lit from the inside by a warming light, with a perch rock and a small bit of water. Laying on the rock was a small pond turtle shell, presumably with its head and legs tucked inside.
Koga looked at the carrier, confused. âIs it not⌠too cold to be carryinâ that thing aroundâŚâÂ
Soumaâs face dropped at the question, âI truly hope not. Iâve been doing my best to keep him warm. Iâm unsure if the lighting fixture Iâve installed in his carrier is enough. Weâve been stopping in shops periodically to make sure he doesnât freeze. I am beginning to think this was not the great plan I had thought it to be⌠But I acted selfishly. I did not want to give up on my morning run with AdonisâŚâ
âKanzaki. I would not have taken offense to you canceling for a day if you had other responsibilities.âÂ
âI know⌠As I said, I was acting selfishly. I enjoy spending time with you and did not want to miss an opportunity to do so,â Souma lamented.
âAh⌠That means very much to me, Kanzaki. You truly are a dear friend to me.â
âAdonisâŚâ
Koga looked between the two of them with thinly veiled discomfort at the quarrel he had been forced into witnessing, if you could even call it that. âSo if you two are going on a walk with the turtle⌠Whyâre you at the dog park?â
Souma brightened at the reminder of why they were there, âAdonis saw you and suggested that Kamegorou-san meet your dog. He spoke very highly of how well behaved Leon is, and if Adonis says he is well trained, I trust him.â Souma looked back at Adonis as they exchanged fond smiles. âWe saw him with you just a moment ago. Where did he go?â
âLeonâs a free spirit and a lone wolf.
Koga, suppressing an instinctive anxiety, tried again. Louder this time, Koga shouted, âLEON!âÂ
And still, nothing happened.Â
âGod fucking damnit where did he go,â Koga grumbled. Leon was well trained, and rarely ever ran off without coming back. Koga also highly doubted he could get very far on his little legs. âFuck, I donât know where the hell he went.â
âWould you like us to help you look for him?â Adonis asked, concern clear in his eyes.
âAh⌠Fuck, yeah, if you can.â Koga gave in. Souma pressed his carrier closer to his body and wrapped his arms around it completely in an attempt to keep its passenger as warm as possible, and then the three of them set off in different directions, all shouting Leonâs name.Â
After about ten minutes of walking around the park, Koga finally started to allow himself some internal panic. Leon never did this. Even when he was being trained as a puppy, he never strayed far from Koga for very long, especially not after having his name called. Not responding when his name was called implied that Leon was far enough away to not be able to hear him calling. Did he run away? Did someone take him? It was about 7am at this point. There were only about two other owner and dog pairs here right now, both caught up in their own little worlds. Still, he approached them and asked if they had seen an orange corgi running around anywhere. Both said they hadnât been paying attention. A little negligent of them, Koga muttered under his breath as he turned away. Koga never didnât pay attention to what the other dogs at the park were doing, just in case any of them were misbehaved enough to try anything⌠Except now Koga was the negligent one because he just left his dog completely unattended while he talked to his friends and now his best friend was lost and he was never gonna see him again-
âOogami.â Adonis put a hand on his shoulder, snapping him out of his thoughts for the second time that morning. âOh. I did it again. I apologize, Oogami.â
Souma piped up, âUnfortunately, me and Adonis did not make any meaningful progress towards finding your dog. We searched the entire left side of the park, and both found nothing. Iâm sorry we couldnât be of any help.â He paused, â... and unfortunately, it is 7:30⌠Classes start in half an hourâŚâ He trailed off, looking extremely guilty that he had to put his studies over finding Kogaâs friend. âIt would be unwise of us to show up so late and risk punishment⌠And I also need to assure Kamegorou-san is properly warmed up.â
âIf you would like, we can help you the moment we get out of school today. Kanzaki and I both feel deeply responsible for Leon running off, since we distracted you with our presence while you were watching him. So we will both do anything we can to help you reunite with him. I apologize that we cannot do more for him now.â Adonis said, hand still placed comfortingly on Kogaâs shoulder.Â
As always, when the two of them were being so earnest with him, it was very hard to be upset at them for what he knew was ultimately his mistake. There were three things that Koga took more seriously than anything in the world. #1 was being a member of Undead, #2 was practicing his guitar, and #3 was being Leonâs owner. He knew that despite Adonis and Soumaâs claim to guilt, the blame for Leon straying too far away was on him.Â
â... I think Iâm gonna keep lookinâ for him for a bit. Student council be damned; itâs not like Iâve been extremely late all that often. I just gotta hope theyâll make an exception this time. Leonâs too important not to keep lookinâ... You two can go though. Iâll come bother ya if I really do need help after school though.â Koga was desperately trying to keep his cool and not show how stressed he truly was. There was an image to maintain, after all.Â
Adonis looked at him unsure. âKanzaki, maybe we should stay⌠I would feel truly terrible if something were to happen to Leon because Oogami could not find him in timeâŚâÂ
âNah, seriously, you guys are good to go. Leonâs tough, I trained him to attack if he senses bad intentions. Unfortunately, he hasnât attacked Hakaze-senpai yet, but hopefully heâll get there one day.â Koga said, only about 90% sarcastically.Â
Souma giggled at that, while Adonis gave him a look of confusion, âWhy would Hakaze-senpai have bad intentions with Leon?âÂ
âAgh, nevermind, I forgot you two donât always understand sarcasmâŚIâm just sayinâ, he can handle himself. Besides, heâs got on a collar with my phone number on it. Nobodyâs gonna think he's a stray.âÂ
Having been reassured of Leonâs supposed strength, Adonis relented. âOkay. If you say heâs strong, we will go. Please let us know if you do need our help.â And with that, Adonis and Souma said their farewells and headed off. Koga sighed. Reassuring Adonis did actually help to reassure himself that Leon would be fine. Leon didnât look anything like the strays that wander around the area. Heâs a well taken care of, 12kg corgi. If anyone found him, they would call him.Â
Confidence in his ability to find Leon restored. He set off to search the entire park again.Â
How far away could Leon truly even get?
âââââââ
Pretty fucking far, apparently.Â
He had searched the entire park, the park's direct exterior, up and down the streets surrounding it, hell, he even had begun to retrace his steps and walk back to ES, hoping that Leon was smart enough to know his way back home.Â
By the time the clock had reached 9:30, Koga knew he had to give up for now and take Adonis and Souma up on their offer to help look for him after school. He could tell he wasnât doing a very good job at not wearing his emotions on his sleeve, because the second he walked in the room, they both gave him a slight look of pity that he pretended not to see.Â
All day, Koga couldn't stop checking his phone. It was truly baffling to him that no one had called and said they had found him yet. He couldn't stop bouncing his leg up and down and fidgeting with pen and looking out the window and checking the clock. He was so antsy, he felt like he was gonna explode.Â
The minute they were dismissed, he bolted from his seat, ready to go resume the search.Â
Adonis and Souma followed swiftly behind him. âDid you really find no leads while you were out this morning, Oogami-dono?,â Souma asked. âYou were gone for an extra two hoursâŚâÂ
Koga glared. âIf I found somethinâ, do you think Iâd be rushing out the door like this Zakki?!â Souma wrinkled his nose at Kogaâs tone, but said nothing in response, reasoning that he was being even more snippy than usual because of his lost friend. If Souma lost one of his dear friends, like Kamegorou or Saigoudon, he doesnât think heâd be very calm either.Â
âWhere did you leave off your search, Oogami?â Adonis spoke up.
âI was heading back towards ES to see if Leon had somehow gone back home without me. But I realized how late it was getting, so I called it quits⌠Letâs split up. Zakki, go towards ES and see if he somehow made his way back towards that area. Adonis, you come with me and weâll both look around the area of the dog park separately.â
They both nodded, and they all headed off on their separate missions.Â
âââââââ
As the sun began to set, Koga allowed himself to feel an emotion he had not allowed himself to feel all day: dread. He and Adonis had searched an even wider area than he was able to cover this morning. He had begun to ask locals if they had seen a corgi waddling around, but both of them had come up empty handed on any sort of lead.Â
Only around 6pm did they finally allow themselves a break. They found a nice local cafe to get a rest from the cold in, just to warm up a bit before they ultimately headed back to ES. Adonis watched as Koga took a phone call while he got their drinks. âWas that someone calling about Leon?âÂ
Koga sighed. âNah. It was Sengoku calling on Zakkiâs behalf. He didnât find anything in the direct area around ES. Leon isnât there.âÂ
Adonis frowned at that, âIâm truly sorry, Oogami. I cannot shake the feeling this is my faultâŚâÂ
âSânot your fault, I already told you that. You donât haveâta feel guilty over it, Adonis. It was me who shouldnâta let him off the leash in the first place. He never does stuff like this though! Heâs never just run away from me like that before⌠And I mean honestly, how far could he have even gotten?!âÂ
Adonis frowned at Kogaâs attempt at a joke. âSo what is your plan n-â
âIâm so sorry to interrupt. Did you two gentlemen say you were looking for a corgi?â
Koga immediately shot to attention. One of the cafeâs waitresses had timidly approached the table. âYes. Why? Have you seen one? What do you know?!â Koga frantically asked. Her eyes widened, slightly, at the sudden outburst of her patron.Â
âI⌠Two gentlemen came in here earlier, one of them was carrying a corgi. They got drinks and dessert, and a small cup of whipped cream for him, dined, and then leftâŚI vaguely remember them discussing needing to return him to his owner.â
Holy shit. Leon WAS kidnapped! He was fucking dognapped! Whoever the bastards were, they knew they had stolen the Oogami Kogaâs dog, and they were gonna ransom him out for money! Or something potentially worse! Koga didnât know what he was gonna do, he was an idol sure, but he didnât have Leon ransom money?! Maybe he can convince the company to pay, or get Tenshouin to use some rich person trickery bullshit to figure out who kidnapped his damn dog-
âMay I ask, what did they all look like?,â Adonis asked. âBoth the dog and the two men,â he added.Â
She thought about it for a second, âThe dog⌠was orange with white patches on his face and belly. Definitely a corgi breed.â Adonis and Koga shared a quick look. Definitely Leon. âAnd the two men⌠One had long-ish black hair, and scarlet eyes, and the other had blonde hair and brown eyes, but- oh, they kinda looked grey when the light hit them right. He was very charming, the way he talked, and-â
When Adonis looked back to Koga, he could practically feel the rage billowing off him in hot waves. âThose fucking assholes.â Cutting off the women from her rambling about how this handsome blonde strangerâs casual flirtatious compliments made her double shift totally worth it, Koga angrily grabbed his jacket and got up. Adonis quickly bowed in apology towards her as he followed Koga out the door. âIâm seriously gonna kill âem this time. They stole my fucking dog!âÂ
âOogami. We donât know why Sakuma-senpai and Hakaze-senpai took Leon. We have to hear them out first.âÂ
âIâm not hearinâ shit from the two of them! Theyâre both gonna fuckinâ die today!âÂ
âââââââ
The door to the Rhythm Link office space Rei and Kaoru were occupying slammed open. Koga was immediately greeted with the sight of the two of them lounging on the couches located at the back wall, filling out paperwork. And there, on Kaoruâs lap being absentmindedly pet, was Leon, napping without a care in the world. He seethed even more.Â
âYOU TWO.â Rei and Kaoru both looked up at him with surprise. Rei shook it off quickly, âDoggy. We were hoping you would stop by today.â Noticing Adonis standing anxiously behind Koga, Rei smiled at him. âAh, hello to you as well, Adonis-kun.âÂ
âHello, Sakuma-senpai.â
âDonât be nice to these thieves!,â Koga said as he turned around to reprimand Adonis. He whipped back around. âYou two stole my dog!âÂ
Having been woken up from his nap, Leon finally noticed his ownerâs presence. He immediately hauled himself up, and Kaoru unfolded himself to allow Leon to jump off his lap and bound towards Koga. As soon as he reached grabbing distance, Koga snatched Leon up into his arms. He hugged him close and pressed his face into the side of his neck.Â
âFuckinâ scared meâŚâ Koga whispered into his neck, soft enough so only Leon could hear. Angry as he was, having Leon back in his arms significantly dampened the rage he had felt. Not that he was gonna let his seniors know that though.Â
He adjusted Leon so that he was pressed against his chest, head on his shoulder as if he were a baby. Koga stood up, made sure his dog was still comfortable, then glared at Rei and Kaoru. âAlright, âfess up. Why did you two take my dog, and then not bother to tell me you had him all day? I was goinâ crazy all day thinking I lost him. Itâs really pissinâ me off that you two had him all day and didnât fuckinâ tell me.â
Rei yawned. âAre you not glad that he was found and isnât out there wandering the frozen streets? He even got to spend his day being spoiled by his favorite grandparents~âÂ
âDonât call yourself that!âÂ
Rei shrugged as he continued absentmindedly filling out whatever bullshit paperwork they had been working on. Kaoru, at least, had the decency to look guilty. âWe were gonna bring him back to you, honest!âÂ
Koga continued to glared, unimpressed with this answer. Kaoru shrank back, still attempting to hold a kind smile, but evidently crumbling under his gaze. âRei-kun and I were going out for brunch and we found him running around in an alley. Since you werenât with him, we figured he was lost but my phone was dead, and Rei-kunâs-â Kaoru looked at Rei, exacerbated. âYou wanna tell Koga-kun what happened to your phone?âÂ
Koga switched his attention back to Rei, who now looked like he was actively trying to hide from this conversation, paperwork entirely covering his face. Realizing he had become the center of attention, he slowly lowered them, a feigned nonchalant smile on his face. âAh⌠well⌠Itâs truly an almost chivalrous story, if you think about i-â
âRei-kun.âÂ
Rei deflated at his partner's condemnation. â... You see, Kaoru-kun and I attended a dinner meeting last night to meet with Hasumi-kun, Kiryuu-kun, a handful of representatives from an advertising firm, and some of the companiesâ higher ups to discuss some business about our unitsâ involvement in an upcoming advertising campaign for a brand of instant ramen. It was truly a beautiful establishment that they booked, with a dazzling view of the city skyline, and you could even get a stunning view of the ocean-â
âGet to the fuckinâ point.â Koga barked.
â... In my, truly noble might I add, attempt to get Kaoru-kun a picture of the view with my mobile phoneâs camera⌠It seems that I was not being careful enough, and I dropped it off the balcony.â Rei hung his head in shame at the admission. âThe representatives, at least, found my fumble amusing.â
âAnd so, neither of us had phones we could use to call you. We were planning on just taking Leon-chan back to you when you were done with classes, and we were done with all this paperwork, but it's ended up taking much longer than we thought it would.â Kaoru finished, sighing over the misfortune.
Koga squinted at the two of them. âThat all sounds like a buncha bullshit you two made up. Whatâs the real version?â
Kaoru frantically shook his head. âNonono! I promise itâs the truth!! Believe me, I wish I could make up the story of Rei dropping his phone off a balcony in front of all those important businessmen. Hasumi-kun was not happy with us on the ride back to the dormsâŚâÂ
Adonis interrupted to ask, âDid it hit anyone when it fell? I cannot imagine that would have ended well if it had.âÂ
âThankfully, it did not.â Rei said, mood shifting back to being annoyingly playful. âTo be quite honest, I do not understand why Hasumi-kun was so displeased with my actions. The representatives loved it, and itâs not as if it was his mobile phone-â
âShaddup. You two are idiots.â Koga said, finally reaching his limit with the conversation. âCâmon Leon. Letâs get you cleaned up since you were apparently playinâ in the trash. Letâs go, Adonis.âÂ
âKoga-kun!â As the three of them turned to leave, Kaoru suddenly got up to stop them. âWeâre sorry. Really. We didnât mean to scare you so bad. We know how much Leon-chan means to you, so we thought it was best if we looked after him. We shouldâve found a way to tell you sooner.âÂ
Rei nodded in agreement. âRei-chan is weally sowwy~â
Kaoru scowled, Koga scoffed. Realizing his error in determining the mood, he quickly added, âAh, I mean, what I meant was that we are truly sorry, Koga-kun. Kaoru-kun is right when he said that we should have made more substantial attempts to contact you. We apologize.â As if planned, they both bowed to him and Leon in sincere apology.Â
âOogami, I think they are serious.â Adonis whispered.Â
â... Did you guys at least feed him?â
Kaoru perked up at that, âYes! I used some steak pieces that someone left in the fridge with a âfree to useâ note on them, along with his usual food combination to make him something gourmet~! He really liked it, from what I could tell.âÂ
Rei smiled. âThough it was safer with us, he kept trying to find his way to your dorm room. If I had to guess, he must have simply wandered too far in his excitement at the fresh winter snow, but he made some truly valiant attempts to get away from us to find you.âÂ
âHeh, good boy.â Koga grinned at his dog. He knew he would never purposefully run away from him. â... Fine. You two are forgiven. If anything like this ever happens again though, you both are fuckinâ dead, hear me?â
âYes, Wan-chan~âÂ
âUnderstood~âÂ
âGood. Adonis, letâs go.â As Koga turned to leave, Adonis bowed in departure to their seniors.Â
They walked to the elevator in comfortable silence. Leon had fallen back asleep, face pressed safely into the side of Kogaâs neck. Once in the elevator that would take them back down to the dorm levels, Adonis broke the silence. âOogami⌠I still feel bad about you having lost Leon-san. Seeing you reunited with him has made me even more aware of the damage I have caused, so I must offer my help with bathing him, if you will let me.â
If getting close with Adonis has taught him anything, it's Adonisâ tells when he's not being entirely forward with his feelings. Adonis was shy, but never closed off. Right now, his body language was almost anxious; arms crossed and looking downwards. If Koga had to guess, he didnât truly still feel bad about being the cause for Leonâs brief disappearance.Â
Kogaâs eyes softened. âIf you just wanted to spend more time with him, you coulda just said so.âÂ
âI apologize.â
âDidnât mean it in a bad way. âCourse you can come help me⌠If you wannaâŚâÂ
Adonis smiled at him. âIâd like that very much.âÂ
