25. “My nightmares are usually about losing you.”

A loud sniffle pulled Bertholdt out of the depths of sleep. He looked around in confusion, trying to get his bearings in the dark room. But all was quiet. Unnervingly quiet.

Another sniff drew his attention to the figure beside him. Reiner was still under the blanket, lying on his side and facing the wall. Not good. He always slept on his back.

Bertholdt gently placed a hand on Reiner’s shoulder. His boyfriend froze at the touch. “Reiner…?”

Reiner shrugged Bertholdt’s hand off. “’m fine,” he muttered, “go back to sleep.”

But he wouldn’t face him. Still concerned, Bertholdt started to rub Reiner’s back, fingers carressing his warm skin.

“What did I just say?” came the responding growl.

“I’m not sleeping yet…” Bertholdt whispered. “Not until I know you’re alright.”

Silence. Then, slowly, Reiner finally rolled over. Even in the dim light, Bertholdt could see how red and puffy his eyes were, how tightly he pressed his lips together. Bertholdt immediately cupped Reiner’s jaw and stroked his cheek with his thumb.

“I’m okay, promise,” Reiner said quietly, not meeting Bertholdt’s worried gaze. “Just… a nightmare.”

Bertholdt hummed in sympathy. He knew what that was like. He ran his fingers through Reiner’s short hair and placed a kiss on his forehead. “It’s over now.”

“Yeah, for now…” Reiner mumbled. But then he furrowed his brow again and swallowed hard. “…My nightmares are usually about losing you…”

Bertholdt’s heart broke when Reiner’s voice cracked at the end. All day, Reiner was the strong one, always helping and encouraging everyone who needed a boost. Very rarely was he the one who needed support.

“Hey, hey…” Bertholdt drew Reiner close, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend and gently cradling his head to his chest. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here with you, and I always will be.”

Reiner hugged him back, his strong arm squeezing Bertholdt closer. “Thank you,” he murmured, warm breath ghosting over Bertholdt’s chest. A few deep, shaky breaths passed and he finally started to relax. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too.”

Reiner! This boy was so smitten with Bertholdt from almost the moment they met; of course, it was more of a friend crush at first because he just really wanted to be friends with this awesome kid, but once they became best friends, that sentiment quickly morphed into “I want that boy to be my boyfriend.” Bertholdt had no mind for romance until he was older, and was honestly oblivious to Reiner’s pining, even once he started to pine himself.
