Surely their "licensed network of content and research partners" are paying Automattic for this data, which is obtained from users? Like I know it's not exactly the same as selling personal information like most sites do but this still leaves a NASTY taste in my mouth

Not enough people supported them. I remember some time ago an employee/ former employee shared the figures for ad-free subscribers and they were depressingly low. So now Tumblr is likely using one of their only other viable money options
