I Was Never Nothing

In Cincinnati, Ohio there is an annual College Movie Festival. It includes several local colleges and they have teams submit short films. Our team was Team Rosie from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Team Rosie was conceived by my mom. She suggested I make a team based around female empowerment. I loved the idea. This was my final year and I wanted to make an impact. Rosie the Riveter was always a big inspiration for me. I contacted several classmates and Team Rosie was born. We were only going to be given two weeks to write, shoot and edit the film. That didn’t stop us from meeting before the two weeks to discuss our roles and do some priliminary casting. I would be directing, editing and writing. I wrote the film in an hour at 11pm after being given the theme of Tolerance. The story was based on experiences by myself and those close to me. We shot the film over a weekend. Everyone supported each other and worked together. I was very injured that weekend and I could not walk. My crew literally held me up during filming. A picture of Rosie the Riveter was used as a set prop to honor our mascot. We then edited the film and even submitted a day early. When the showing arrived, we were excited to see our hard work on the big screen. Although we won no awards, we didn’t lose. We won through our teamwork, our determination, and our message. Tears were streaming through my eyes just watching our hard work come to fruition. This film was a passion project. We were women and men from all paths of life coming together.
