Birthday Dinner at Forlino
I was tingling with excitement tonight as muffy led me to a secret dining destination for a special birthday dinner. The intrigue was mounting like an avalanche threatening to cascade in a powdery but dense-looking mass (if you look far away).
My taste buds and sensibilities have not yet experienced the fine nuance and exquisiteness of such intellectual cuisine in its many years. Now life demands to be measured by the experiences that engage the delectable playfulness of the senses.
Each plate was delivered with the clarity of purpose befitting a wisened chessmaster or an elder statesman. Each ingredient well placed, each move well considered, each combination well balanced. We were treated to a fine performance in what food is and what food can be. The fattiness, meltiness, crispiness, tangy-ness, sweet and savoury all mingling and mixing and interacting in a carnival of . The pieces breaking down and reconstituting in the mouth to birth something far greater than its parts. Like when each of the Power Rangers robots combine to form the MegaZord.
In order of the dishes served, we have:
Amuse bouche (its pronounced amuse boooooshhh http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=amuse-bouche): cauliflower custard with mushroom consomme and parma ham cubes and truffle
Appetiser: cured tasmanian ocean trout with caviar, burrata cheese and dried tomato vinaigrette. Absolutely delightful, cheese was surprisingly mild and complemented the trout which just all melted into puddles of happiness (in my mouth).
Catch of the day: cod wrapped in ham with deep fried zucchini flowers and seaweed puree.
Pasta: 5 cheese tortellini with kurobuta pork cheek in saffron sauce, beetroot puree and autumn truffle.
Battery ran out so we didn't take a picture. Found out there was a little bit of juice left in the battery only half way through while we were daintily eviscerating our food. Muahhaha.
Main: angus beef tenderloin with foie gras, more autumn truffle, rosemary potato puree
Dessert: coconut panna cotta with toasted coconut shreds, pineapple, passion fruit, raspberry and dark chocolate twig.
Dessert 2: sweet cherry pie. Saccharine personality served with honey melons, juicy tenderlips and dressed with hisbiscus flowers.
Forlino opened my eyes to food. And it opened my heart to life.
