Godric fought not to laugh. He took a deep swig of mead to cover his smirk. “What does that matter?” he asked.

Salazar was gripping his own goblet very tightly. “It matters because - ” He couldn’t seem to say why.

This time Godric did laugh. “Second place doesn’t count, and you know it. That’s what bothers you.”

Salazar decided not to dignify that with a response. He concentrated instead on cutting his bread. Across the hall, Helga was walking along the Hufflepuff table congratulating her students. The Great Hall was adorned with bright banners in yellow and black. This was Hufflepuff’s first victory, ending three years of Slytherin wins, so they had never been seen before. A towering black badger hung behind the High Table. Salazar already longed to see the silver and emerald banners of his own house.

Nonetheless, when the time came, he raised his goblet to Helga and smiled along with her when the Hufflepuff table rose in applause. She was his friend, and he could not begrudge her.
