Knowing
She sat on the floor of his room flipping through photos of his summer travels while he filled on his lap top playing clips of his favorite new songs. There is was a time when hanging out in a boys room may have raised some eyebrows, but they had been friends for so long that no one really thought about it any more. The door was always open and his large family was always passive back and forth popping a head in to ask about Lilly's summer or give her a message to pass along to her parents.
Though they had seen each other off and on through the summer it had always be in large groups. They attended the same youth group along with a number of their friends from school and the summer had been filled with pool parties, bbqs, and floats down the river. In between summer jobs and family trips they had both managed to attend a few of the gatherings and had hung out some. But always in the chaos of the larger group. This was the first time it had been just the two of them since that moment in the school parking lot on graduation night.
The time apart had given her room to think through the night and she realized now with a sinking hear that her gut reaction had been accurate. She was head over heals in love with her best friend. As she sat there listening to him casually talk about the girls he had met and hung out with this summer, she figured he had no such revelation.
With a stiflled sigh she slowly and methodically packed up each hope and dream that had bubbled to the surface over the summer. One by one she packed them away in tiny boxed and filed them away in her heart in a section called “someday.” She wasn't sure when it had happened, but she knew she had been in love with him for at least a year now. If she had managed to ignore those feelings this long, she should be able to push them away a while longer.
