“Roberta.” Murphy presses his lips together. He swears he could stare at her for years and never fully understand her – how strong she is. How weak she becomes around those she loves. How desperately, utterly human she is after all this time. Murphy folds his arms over his chest, swallowing thickly as he glances at the ground.
“You think we’re strong enough to go on without you? You think I am?” He huffs, rolling his eyes with a soft shake of his head.
“Thought you knew me better than that.” And he doesn’t know what else to say; if he sounds indignant, maybe it’s because he is. He doesn’t want to come to simple agreements when they end him never being able to see her again.
“I can’t watch you die,” he says simply, letting his arms thud to his sides. “I won’t.”
BAM. There it was . It was always serious when someone used her christian name . She nods her head - trying not to let the emotions rushing over her consume her whole . She knew that she was a good enough leader , she’d got her group this far with a little help and a few casualties . Somehow though, it still managed to get to her when they told her how much they NEEDED her . Nobody has ever NEEDED her ... she just did her job . For her that was still what she was doing .
She laughs a little , despite herself . she wasn’t sure how he managed to be amusing to her even in the darkest of times - but whatever it was , she was grateful for it . He was like the sun - warming the world even if it did shine a little too hard in your eyes sometimes .
“ Are you going to stand there .. and honestly tell me that you’re NEVER going to get yourself into trouble again ? “
Pause - she gives him a look that’s more than affectionate .
“ Because I don’t THINK that you can go one day without nearly dying on me . “
