zoomer's kneejerk thoughts after finishing this book + half assed review. spoilers ahead.
I saw a comment/post somewhere saying that the judge may be a reference to white supremacy and racism, and now Iām eager to do a reread with that in mind. Maybe next year Iāll reread it and add on to this review.
I assume in the book chigurh isnāt an anglosaxon or anything cus why is he calling ppl crackers LMAO

my fav judge fact is that he canonically has mites - itās just such an innocuous detail and itās probably not even unique to him (most of the gang would likely be crawling with all manner of ticks and mites too due to their frequent bivouacking in the open terrain and infrequent bathing opportunities) but the moment itās mentioned (Chapter VII) it instantly adds this new, filthy layer to his character. Up until that moment heās been presented as this ominous but otherwise clean figure. His whiteness and hairlessness implies this twisted sense of pureness (a product of racismās association of whiteness and shaving with being hygienic) and yet when you look closer heās just as gross as anyone else. Because white supremacy and the colonial effort are gross, if not from afar then most definitely up close. Where having no hair might make him seem streamlined and beluga-like, instead it has him sweat profusely and (though heād never show it) deeply uncomfortable, especially because BM is set 40 years before talcum powder was invented. His vessel is vast and imperfect, teeming with āsmall lifeā that thrives in āthe folds of his hairless skinā to which it appears he must nightly try to groom himself from - not because heās worried about hygiene but because he canāt stand to help something live, canāt bear the notion that his body might offer some level of protection and sustenance for a single creature, not even a mite. Because what kind of parasite would he be if he let anything feed off him? In his size and energy he resembles a tick, as well. The further along he ushers the gang down their path of both inward and outward destruction, the broader he seems, thriving where (or even because) they fester, fattened on not just the bodies of the Native Americans and Mexicans, but the labour of the gang members. This is where I think focusing on Holdenās fatness misses McCarthyās characterisation because itās not so much that the judge is fat as he is just big - if McCarthy wanted us to only associate Holdenās weight with his evilness he wouldnāt have bothered to make him 7ft. Holden is both the landscape and the bulldozer, the locust and the vulture. He is borderline vampiric in his unidentifiable age and stamina, never depicted sleeping and claiming to not require it, energised on bloodshed alone. His partnership with Glanton seems symbiotic until itās not, Glantonās decline (or at least its acceleration) decided the moment he invited Holden inside the group after they find him sat upon that boulder. In their final moments, when Glanton is at his nadir (his enterprise scattered, his company defected) the judge is at his apex, stood literally above him, āstanding on the rise in silhouette against the evening sun like some great bald archimandrite.ā Essentially what Iām trying to say is the judge having mites is symbolic of American settler colonialism. Heās also maybe a vampire and that comes with its own capitalist allegories but thatās another post prolly.

very quick notes I took on my rewatch of NCFOM, organized and formatted for my blog
Antonās second kill of the movie is him pulling a man over on the street, having him leave his car, and using an air gun to kill him with a shot in the forehead. Anton asks him to āplease hold still, sirā. The scene immediately after is Llewelyn telling an antelope to āhold stillā while he takes a shot. At least the animal had the sense to run away.
I think my favorite part of ncfom is Carson referring to Anton as a guy who doesnāt have a sense of humor, meanwhile Anton is by far the funniest creep in that movie. Killing people part aside the way he talks to people before he does (or doesnāt, in the case of the store clerk) kill them is hilarious

around halfway through The Blood Meridian. Favorite quote by far āDid you learn to whisper in a sawmill?ā Gave me a giggle. Gave me a chortle. Gave me a hum hum. If you will. If you cheese, of course.
The movie I picked out to watch today was Appleseed Alpha dir by Shinji Aramaki but the soundtrack is so bad i want to stop watching it hasnāt even been 10 minutes
