Why stigma and discrimination hinder recovery and social inclusion for people with mental illness...
Click to read a pdf article by me on the issue of stigma and discrimination in mental health. I wrote it for my MSc so I'm afraid it reads pretty academically, but there's some really interesting facts and research in there, and there's some excellent books and articles in the references section.
It's split into discussions of how stigma and discrimination operate in the following settings:
Employment
Housing
Healthcare
Criminal Justice System
Relationships (including 'courtesy stigma')
MediaΒ
[I shouldn't have to say this but please do not copy this for yr own academic purposes. I am publishing this in the spirit of sharing knowledge for free - I'm not here to up yr grades for you. Thank you!]
Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge.

Thank you. It is amazing to have a positive space to recover with others, rather than feeling like there might be too many triggers!
You're welcome!

Sizes are just numbers assigned to garments to make shopping easier. Ever thought of it that way? They're numbers, put in order, that are designed to make our lives easier when we go shopping. They're not telling you you're EXTRA LARGE, or SMALL. They're like, "oh hey this top is smaller than that one, just FYI" So you can be like, "Why thank you size tag, you just saved me so much time!" Size tags should not hurt your feelings. You should be thankful that they exist! And besides, every size is dependent on the brand. There is no universal size. They're sized in comparison to other items of the same variety, for your convenience. Just don't be scared of a number on a tag, okay?
Distractions
Ok, so hereβs a list I have in my crisis plan and on my wall of distractions. These are ones I personally find helpful, however they may not apply to you. Distractions should never be a task too large as it could potentially make you feel worse i.e if you were planning a party and decided to use it as a distraction it could make you feel worse and only heighten your emotions. Small, often pointless tasks are best.
Puzzles
Crosswords
Books
Working out
Making bracelets
Facebook games
Finding recipes for my food scrapbook
Stretches
Drinking tea
Making cards
Writing poems
Painting my nails
Face masks
Scrapbooking
Listening to music, very loudly
Smoking a cigarette mindfully
Scribbling
Calling a friend
Colouring
Making a poster
Having a bubble bath
Going for a walk
Making a βto doβ list and crossing them off one by one
Listening to what is going on around me i.e mindfulness
Listing important people in my life and describing them with one word
Making vlogs
Burning incense
Throwing eggs at trees
Writing a letter
Trying to blow big bubbles with bubble gum
Customising clothing
This list is not inclusive, but itβs a start - find what works for you!

I think this is a wonderful change. I'm currently in intensive therapy to try and recover and that's why I really want to do now. I think trying to push forward is better than letting the past dictate who you are, and more who you want to be. I'll help however I can <3
I'm really happy for you, recovery is always the better option :) I'm going to be opening up the submissions box soon, if you or anyone else has anything to submit it'd be brilliant.
