Welcome to @recede-au , the official blog dedicated to the STH AU Recede created by Mod Kit (@bobbutterbutt) and Mod Tails (@kittails) . We created this blog in order to have a more organized place to post our art and information involving the AU, as well as to answer any questions anybody may have about it.
Recede AU is a Kitsunami and Tails focused Sonic horror/angst AU set many years in the future from current canon. It deals heavily with themes of abuse, trauma, codependency, and obsession. It also contains a lot of medical imagery, violence, blood, extreme gore, torture, and death. Please exercise caution when viewing this blog if any of these topics are difficult for you to engage with.
AU SYNOPSIS
Tails, interested in Kit's endoskeleton and cybernetics, asks Kit if he can study him, offering the ability to repair Surge with what he learns in return. Kit, who has been feeling frustrated and directionless since Amy came into his and Surge's life, sees an opportunity to be useful to Surge again and obliges. During their sessions, Tails comes to realize that he enjoys inflicting pain on and exercising control over Kit, and Kit realizes that he loves feeling useful and having control exerted over him again. The two convene more and more often, falling into a deeply toxic and codependent relationship with one another. Surge becomes suspicious of the two's activities once she notices Kit's been spending more and more time with the other fox, sometimes multiple days or a week at a time. Though she has no evidence aside from Kit and Tails’ strange behavior, she can't shake the feeling that something's off.

Surge and Amy walk into a diner and spot Sonic in a booth who was waiting for them
Surge: "Ugh. Did he really have to come along too?"
Amy shoots Surge a gentle, trying smile.
Surge cocks an eyebrow at her and sighed.
Surge: "Whatever. Actually, its a good thing you're here."
The tenrec and hedgehog took their seats across from Sonic.
Sonic: "Eh?"
Xe looked around as if to check if Surge was talking to anyone but xem.
Surge: "Yeah. Your brothers been hanging around mine a lot, huh. I know you spend plenty of time around his workshop. So, what have those dorks been up to?"
Surge stirred her drink as she spoke.
Sonic: "Oh, ya know, nerd stuff. Its not really my scene."
The image of Tails hunched over Kit's trembling body like some sort of animal being possessive over it's prey crept back into his mind. The deprived look in his brother's eyes when he turned to face him.
Xe stifled a shudder in front of the tenrec, who's intense blue eyes pierced him like a blade. He reminded himself of what Tails said, it being for some kind of cybernetic research. But the image of it was still burned into his mind. Tails really had a better stomach than xe did.
Sweat beaded on his temples.
Sonic: "And anyway, I don't hang around there as often, i-i've been running to keep my mind off things lately."
Surge stopped stirring her drink.
Surge: "Oh? What things?"
Sonic: "Well. Tails has been…distant. I think hes really started to finally branch off and be more independent. Kit seems like the sort of friend his age he really needed for a while now. I'm happy for him, but, its hard to let go of something familiar, you know? So I've been running to process those feelings more."
Surge was picking her food apart now, having not taken any proper bites just yet. She just stabbed around at it with her fork.
Surge: "I…guess I get that"
Sonic: "Ha, really?"
Surge: "I've just been… worried about Kit lately"
She didn't sound vulnerable, more stern than anything.
Sonic: "…"
Surge: "Come on. Give me details. I KNOW you still hang around that shitty place constantly."
She was slamming her fist on the table now, their silverware rattling.
One of Sonic's brows tapered, seeing Amy frown at Surge's slamming.
Sonic: "Oh come on, Surge. You know I give the guy his privacy!
Wrong wording. She didn't like that.
Surge: "Are you saying I don't give Kit his privacy? You-"
Surge's muzzle contorted into a snarl, her pupils dilating, climaxing at an expression of pure rage before she settled herself into a more relaxed position, defeated.
Amy reached a gentle hand out to pet at Surge's back.
Amy: "Surge, I know this is something you've been vulnerable about..and since you care about Kit, its normal to be worried."
The pink hedgehog looked to Sonic while she spoke now.
Amy: "But it might be best to give Kit some more grace. You don't need to trust me right away, but Tails wouldn't do anything to hurt him. They might have some bumps in their relationship, but isn't that for them to sort out between eachother as adults?"
Surge turned to look at Amy, breathing at a quicker pace. This wasn't helping. She looked to Sonic again, still livid with a knot in her chest.
Surge: "… I don't appreciate you saying I don't give Kit any privacy. What do you think I've been doing??"
Sonic raised his hands defensively with a concerned expression.
Sonic: "I'm just saying. I get it, Surge. I've struggled with letting go of being with Tails all the time too, worried about his safety and all, but you've got to give Kit his space and room to grow more as a person"
The tenrec was hissing words at him now.
Surge: "You think I don't know that?? What do you know? You're always out running aintcha??? Its like you just stopped caring altogether! Well, Tails isn't LIKE kit."
She poked his nose as she spoke, squishing it against his snout.
Surge: "Kit is VULNERABLE even if he IS an adult now"
Sonic scowled.
Sonic: "Ugh! W-whats the issue, Surge? What… makes you so skeptical of Tails being good to Kit anyways? I know Tails. I grew up with the guy! I trust him more than I trust even myself sometimes! Where did you even get the idea he's taking advantage of Kit?"
Surge grinned now. Finally, he stopped being so cowardly. Such a conflict-adverse prick. Xe was so annoying.
Surge: "Rose-tinted lenses much, softie?"
Sonic: "Look who's talking!"
Surge: "You ALWAYS assume the best of EVERYONE and it makes you a complete idiot!"
Amy: "ENOUGH!"
The pink hedgehog slammed the table herself, causing Surge and Sonic's quills to flatten down as if they were tamed dogs. Neither of them wanted to upset her.
Amy pointed at Surge.
"I will not be indirectly called an idiot for trusting Tails. I would stand up the same way for you if other people spoke badly about you behind your back, Surge. You know that."
Surge flinched, knowing this to be something she already worried about. It was true, many people still had a bad idea of her. Even though those actions were far in the past, and she improved so much since then. Some would never let her live it down. And it was the same situation with Kit, but fresher, and on a larger scale. But this felt different. Why was she always wrong?
Sonic scratched at some of his stray quills. He really didn't appreciate these things being accused of his best buddy, but at the same time, xe flushed at the guilt of knowing more than xe was letting on. Thing was, Surge would blow it out of proportion, and he knew how happy Kit and Tails are with the time they have together and are passionate about whatever projects and research they have going on. He wasn't going to ruin this for them.
Amy continued.
Amy: "You both mean the world to me. And we all want the same thing. We want the best for Kit and Tails and want them to be happy and healthy, don't we? We all care about them and from both of your conversations that's plenty obvious to me!"
Surge mumbled something about some favoritism being involved in regard to Tails.
Sitting next to Surge, Amy placed a hand on her thigh to rub it gently, and Surge's eyes darted between avoiding eye contact to eventually settling on Amy's face, still frowning.
Amy: "And maybe you forgot, but I care about Kit and don't want him to be hurt again too, Surge. I know why you're protective, Kit hasn't made the same progress you have since...everything."
She looked to Sonic.
Amy: "I think we all know that what happened.. affected Kit differently. But.. Kit does deserve his alone time and room to grow. I think hanging around someone his age with similar interests is exactly what Kit needs right now."
Amy sighed.
Amy: "I trust Tails too. I think caring for Kit's wellbeing and trusting Tails aren't things that should feel mutually exclusive. Yeah?"
Surge's eyes softened as she rested her hand over Amy's, which still rested on her thigh. She was pissed off that Amy wasn't just siding with her on this, but she wasn't going to overstep right now. Its not like she had evidence or.. or anything. But she had her feelings.
Surge: "…I think people can change. The way Kits been acting lately.. its like how he acted when we were with…"
Surge squeezed Amy's hand.
Sonic was looking sick at this point. He wanted to believe Surge was just being paranoid, he didn't want to think about the concept she was peddling of Tails being like Starline in any way.
His arms were crossed as xe tapped his finger against his elbow.
Sonic: "You think I don't know my own brother? He changed, sure, but not for the worse, Surge! Hes branching out and trying new things!"
Amy: "Look. This is silly now. Lets not go on about them while they aren't present. Lets just give them a call and pick a time and place to discuss this all together. It'll be MUCH better and everyone will be on the same page. You both clearly need some reassurance."
Surge: "Fine."
Surge pulled out her phone, dialing Kit's number.
Amy: "Those two lovebirds.. you both just care so much and want the best for them. It's really sweet. It's a part of why I love you both to bits!"
The pink hedgehog gushed at them, jostling Surge while they let her phone ring.
Kit's phone buzzed against the coffee table in the workshop. It was lonely, the room upstairs that it rested in empty.

But if there is one thing I have absolute control over…
its Kit.
His entire life. His vitals, down to how he spends his time.
That kind of control can really get to your head, you know?
It feels great.
In a way, Kit's entire purpose was to be here, under my care, command, and blade. Kit was built to be directed, down to the wire. Theres nothing wrong with a machine adhering to coding. In fact, it not adhering to it's core functions would be considered an error, no?
Its only natural.
Order, purpose, function. Even the average mobian follows these concepts.
I know how to strum the strings of every machine i've come across. I can break them down and put them back together again to understand them better. Kit is no different. Only Kit bleeds. It screams. It feels. It heals. It is the most complex machine I have ever come across.
And there was something about that. Something about the way it's breath hitches when I unzip it's flesh. Something so beautiful.
Something no one else would ever understand.
Not Surge, not Starline. Not even Kit itself could appreciate such beauty.
What’s Amy and Kits relationship like in the au? Do the two of them ever go out to like hang out when it’s the two of them?
How Kit feels toward Amy :
Extremely bitter and resentful towards her. Feels that they are the source of his current problems, with the way they have been distracting Surge and taking time with her away from him.
How Amy feels toward Kit:
Feels sympathetic towards him and recognizes that he doesn't really like them. Gives him space but still tries to extend a paw to him and include him often.
In Recede, their relationship is quite rocky for this reason. Kit wants nothing to really do with Amy, the only time they would really be hanging out around eachother is if Surge is present as well.
Answer: basics: Tails is interested in Kit's cybernetics and healing capabilities. Tells Kit he could do matinence on Surge's cybernetics if he let him learn from his. Kit agrees, seeing also as Surge has been hanging out with Amy a lot more and leaving him alone, he feels bitter and conflicted. He might as well make himself useful to her in this way. Things are pretty normal until Tails realizes he likes the reactions Kit gives to pain. Along with the fact that Kit can survive numerous methods of inflicting said pain that most others cannot. At first, he thinks its wrong, but little by little he ends up manipulating Kit for more sessions, and Kit likes feeling useful to someone again, and they make eachother worse and worse. Surge is the main pushback to their arrangement, even though she doesn't know whats truly going on, she picks up on Kit acting a lot different after hanging out with Tails more often. Tails leverages manipulation to insist she is too overprotective of Kit, and should be happy he is doing his own things now and making his own choices. (no, youre manipulating him, and now her) but this causes Surge to struggle with a lot of her feelings and Kit and her to have some conflict. Kit likes that Tails gives him what he wants where Surge stopped, because she acknowledged that leaning into their codependency was unhealthy. But Kit doesn't care. He just wants to feel like a useful tool again. Tails likes that arrangement. Sonic and Amy are also involved. Amy does her best to support Surge through her emotional struggles with this, but thinks Kit and Tails are just in a relationship for the most part. Sonic trusts Tails wouldn't do anything like this so doesn't press him very much or ask a lot of questions, but he is aware Kit and Tails are doing studies together. Just not aware of how far and out of control these "studies" have gotten.

Yeah that's reasonable. She has it so bad in recede. Watches her brother drift away from her and towards someone she does not trust in the slightest. Sees him coming home late sometimes with injuries he tries to hide but she occasionally gets a glimpse of. Getting more and more suspicious of Tails but she can't do anything unless she wants to risk her relationship with both of the closest people in her life & the reputation she's built up over years after a history of violence and unpredictability. Eventually getting gaslit and manipulated by Tails telling her she's being too controlling over Kit which sends her into a spiral bc she's been trying very very hard to specifically not do that. Ohhh poor poor girl
What’s any and surge’s relationship like in the au? How did it begin? The gossip about them is insane
They're basically queer-platonic partners, but they don't really put a label on it like that. Most of the relationships in the AU are purposefully ambiguous, 1. because it's more about the dynamic between the people involved rather than a relationship status, and 2. myself and @bobbutterbutt are both aroace and we looove projecting lol so most of the characters are also aroace
Surge and Amy met like how they did in canon since Recede is technically just a future AU lol. But after Kit and Surge had a falling out because Surge found out what he was up to behind her back, Amy reached out to her to support her. They became closer from there and remained close friends, and then partners, for years. Amy would kick anyone's ass if that person talked shit about Surge, and vice versa.
