It's so quaint whenever I see those old comics about kids thinking they'll go to prison for overdue books when the reality of working in a library is that so far this year, adults have been shocked when their months-overdue items get charged to their accounts so we can afford to replace them, arguing:
"Well, it's not very popular/nobody else wants it, so you should let me keep it" (as in, forever)
"I didn't think you charged college students"
"I thought everything in a library was free" (yeah, if you steal it)
[on a months-overdue DVD set worth $60] "Oh I'm on the last disc"
