One thing I am not seeing hyped up enough about The Amazing Digital Circus is the melody. Yes, the songs and background music carrying the emotions and themes do a phenomenal job...but the fact that it has a core motif, something memorable and hummable, is something I really appreciate!
I feel like it's becoming less common with media but was used SO well because it's simple but malleable. The straight main theme is upbeat but kind of too bright, almost empty. Done up by a symphony, it becomes a force of overwhelming grandeur. Put a few notes out of place and you get that sense of foreboding! And you can loop the theme over and over (day after day after day-) because, much like the show itself, it ends on the same note it starts on.

It’s the day of the reaping. The Capitol decided to announce that this year will be different. The Hunger Games will take place in an arena where the tributes have to fall in love in order to escape and all of the tributes will be used for entertainment after the Games are over. Nobody knows who will be reaped yet. Work has stopped for most people in the District, and school is out. People are talking about the change, how it's so much better because at least no one will die. Or in the career districts, the careers are complaining about this, that this was not what they were training for. Adults can also be reaped, even if they have a partner already, the Capitol proclaiming that their relationship in any form is null and void if they're reaped. There's an air of tension and relief in both measures as everyone waits for the reaping.
How does your character feel about the possibility of going to the Arena? How do they prepare?
WHG Prompt 2: The Reaping
Now it happens. Your character is standing in the crowd, waiting. A brightly-colored escort stands on a stage with 1 bowl and reads off the Capitol-approved speech about how gracious and merciful the Capitol is for letting the tributes live this time. Ignoring how all of the tributes will be basically puppets after the Arena. 1 or 2 names will be called. After each one, there will be a chance for anyone of any gender or age to volunteer to go in the person’s place.
The reaping begins. A name is called.
WHG Prompt 3: The Last Visit
Every tribute is given one hour for others to visit them. No cameras. Your character sits in the bare gray room of their District’s Justice Building, waiting for the door to open. Does it? Does anyone come to visit them? Just one person? Whole parties of them? No tokens are allowed, no remembrances of their past life will leave this room with them. The Capitol declares that the tributes have no past now.
And finally, they are left alone in the room.
WHG Prompt 4: The Train Ride
After a brief trek from the Justice Building to the train station, cameras flashing everywhere, your character boards the train to the Capitol. Greenery flies past the window as the sky darkens.
The other tributes are there, along with the frilly Capitol escort desperate to get your character to talk about their personalities, plus a few previous District victors who usually would be mentors but now are just there, also confused about what they're supposed to do. There is a bounty of decadent food, screens to watch recaps of the Reaping, places to sleep, and places to speak privately.
What does your character do? Where do they go?
WHG Prompt 5: Chariots
The trains arrive at the Capitol. Your character is whisked away by a prep team and stylist to give them a District-themed outfit. Then they are put atop a horse-drawn chariot and paraded between cheering Capitol crowds to the City Center, then into the shadows of the Training Center.
How does your character react to being here with these other two tributes? What are their outfits like? Do they like the outfits? The limelight? The false glory of the Capitol?
You can coordinate with your District mates on this…or not! You don’t have to match.
WHG Prompt 6: Training
Once in the Training Center, "appropriately" renamed the Romance Center, your character is assigned to lavish living quarters with food and beverages at their fingertips. An elevator ride down takes them to a room with information about the Capitol, tables for them to sit at and talk to their other tributes, "trainers" who teach them about what to expect after the Arena, and wealthy Capitol contributors who can pay for time with individual tributes while they're still single.
How does your character prepare for the Games? Mentally? Physically? What about for their interview?
Do they talk to anyone? Avoid other tributes?
The judging is instead a time where the judges make an info card for each tribute: their romance strengths and weaknesses, physical strengths and weaknesses, and likes and dislikes. They might even tell the tributes how to play their "character" in the Arena as well.
WHG Prompt 7: The Interview
Your character’s stylists have gone all-out to make the most magnificent outfit for your character, regardless of their District. Your character walks out of the tunnel towards the huge crowd seated just outside the light—human shapes are identifiable, but not faces. Only Caesar Flickerman, done up this year in a "romantic" red and pink, is in full view, sitting easily in his chair next to an empty one. It seems like every camera in Panem is pointed at the stage.
Your character gets three minutes. Time starts now.
Excellently creepy prompts! If anyone needs to use my characters for background material, here's what they'll be doing.
Prompt 1:
Craw is busy hustling and has never really thought there was a chance he'd be reaped, anyway, so he's not paying attention. Trying to figure out what anti-Capital demonstrations he can join or cook up, assuming he'll still be around.
Emily hears about the change of rules and immediately dumps her one-night stand just in case either of them get picked. She goes on a shopping (and stealing) spree for a good suit and tie.
Haylo probably spends the whole morning gossiping with his mother, the flamboyantly ruthless District leader, about the new developments and eating a fancy breakfast.
Prompt 2:
Craw is shocked at being called and stays uncharacteristically quiet as he goes up to the stage, fidgeting with his scarf. Once the reality kicks in, he's more just annoyed about all of his plans being interrupted.
Emily has no plans and acts pretty excited to get lavished by the Capitol and not even have to kill anyone. Her smile falters once as she thinks of a special ex husband who might be watching.
Haylo's sister-in-law is actually the one who gets reaped and he's like "Oh no no no, you are a married woman! I'll go~" since he was technically a Career meant to go to the Arena and get killed immediately and earn the family a bunch of rigged betting money anyway.
Prompt 3:
The entire teenage population of Craw's district comes to tearfully send him off, even if they don't know him personally. Everyone's at least a friend of a friend. He manages to keep the mask up and smile and make promises, but by the end, he's exhausted and overwhelmed.
Emily waits in vain for her family members to show up. The only one who does is Sam, the ex in question, the last person she thinks she wants to see. He barely makes it in time and gives her a few quiet words of encouragement. She doesn't kiss him one last time. She regrets it.
Haylo will be able to stay in touch with his mother, but she shows up to congratulate and instruct and hug him anyway. His sister doesn't say anything, but his step-sister, Mycelia, does thank him. For once, he doesn't brush it off. This might be his only earnest moment in this entire shindig. Savor it.
Prompt 4:
Craw has no idea what to make of the victors, actively avoids the Capital reps, and is happy to socialize with other tributes but doesn't make a romantic move yet. He seems friendly and outgoing.
Emily avoids crowds and most people, focusing more on the food and remaining a mystery as long as she can, though she will chat if addressed. She seems smug and intimidating.
Haylo just lounges around and chats with anyone who approaches him, complaining about the food and loudly speculating on how early they can start on the sex. He seems pompous and unapologetic.
Prompt 5:
Craw tries to work with the stylists and ends up with something nice. He's still pleasant to his district mates, but maybe a little reserved still. He's comfortable with all the attention.
Emily refuses to let the stylists alter her in any way and assumes she will naturally rock any outfit they produce. She does not. Still, she remains bombastic and will be touchy and jokey with her district mates. The parade might throw her off a little.
Haylo is already a stylist and is so in cahoots with the Capital ones. He is drop-dead gorgeous and is unfortunately aware of this fact and will mock anyone else who even tries--but will be oddly encouraging and give tips to anyone who seems nervous.
Prompt 6:
If any tributes are going to team up or try anything underhanded, Craw will get involved, from "fake dating" to "full breakout." He's increasingly uncomfortable with the violation of privacy, but he's determined not to let the Capitol have him that easy.
Emily doesn't care and is just having fun with it. Enjoying the food, getting up to mischief, pocketing the silverware. Flirting may or may not happen. You cannot contain her in a way that matters. She might at least hear people out on teamwork proposals, but it's iffy as to whether she would actually commit to anything.
Haylo throws himself into the role. This is the character he's been playing his whole life. He was born to be sacrificed and has never had the luxury of autonomy. All of this is just a natural extension of a destiny he's never tried to fight as long as it justifies keeping him alive. If any of the other tributes try to get a peak under the mask, they will not succeed. Not yet. Sex, he'll do. Teamwork or friendships, no.
Prompt 7:
Again, if there's any group coordination, Craw will do what they're doing--defying the Capitol, making up stories, whatever. He will do anything up on that stage but tell his own truth. It probably won't stand out all that much if there's no teamwork. He knows exactly how to blend into the crowd until the right moment.
Emily will somehow show up in her original suit and tie and a guitar and badly sing some country love song the whole time no matter what Caesar tries to say. The "love" song will turn out to be about a truck right at the end. She will cry.
Haylo, equipped in full slay ho fit, will probably try to seduce Caesar, who will resist playfully but get really flustered about it. Everything Haylo says just reinforces his image as an arrogant, careless prince.
I've finally read enough books and seen enough nature documentaries that I'm trying to get over my fear and am allowing spiders to live in my apartment. Unfortunately, they are getting larger and I am terrified
It's so quaint whenever I see those old comics about kids thinking they'll go to prison for overdue books when the reality of working in a library is that so far this year, adults have been shocked when their months-overdue items get charged to their accounts so we can afford to replace them, arguing:
"Well, it's not very popular/nobody else wants it, so you should let me keep it" (as in, forever)
"I didn't think you charged college students"
"I thought everything in a library was free" (yeah, if you steal it)
[on a months-overdue DVD set worth $60] "Oh I'm on the last disc"
Day people the night before a holiday: Oh boy! Can't wait to get some good sleep so I have energy for all the fun activities I have planned for tomorrow!
Night people who prefer to celebrate with loud music and wild cheering: I'm about to do what's called a pro gamer move
