Cassian abruptly realized heβd been just sitting agape, watching her like some sort of love-drunk idiot, and quickly forced himself to look away- before he remembered that he was supposed to look like a love-drunk idiot right now. So he let himself look back, but he wasnβt going to let himself enjoy it. He couldnβt, not like this.
Ugh. While his lizard-brain was having the time of its life tonight in more ways than one, whatever was left of Cassianβs higher reason absolutely couldnβt wait for this mission to be over.
With back-to-back meetings and appointments leaving them booked and busy for the entire day, this one-hour stretch is the only time Jyn will see Cassian before they go to bed tonight. And, as practicality is in her nature, she takes advantage of everyoneβs focus being elsewhere and says whatβs been on her mind all morning.
βYour backβs hurting, isnβt it.βΒ
Itβs not a question. Jynβs lips barely move when she speaks, voice quiet underneath the drone of Dravenβs voice as he briefs the room, but she knows that Cassianβs heard her when he glances at her out of the corner of his gaze. With their position in the back of the room, up against the wall and half-cloaked in shadows, theyβre barely noticeable; for the most part, everyoneβs attention is on Draven as he goes through details of one of their upcoming missions.Β
Whatβs the point in shoving too many people in a too small room just to reiterate the same facts that theyβd all read on the digital file anyway? Itβs some sort of cosmic punishment, she decides sourly, having to stare at Dravenβs face longer than whatβs healthy. Her mind wanders to other topics easily, focusing on whatβs been on the forefront of her brain the past few hours: Cassianβs health.Β
Even though itβs been a few years since Scarif, itβd left lasting marks on both of them.Β
When he doesnβt give her a better reaction β or anything at all, really, considering that his focus is already back on Draven β she sways slightly so her shoulder nudges against his upper arm, then says, βYouβre leaning up against the wall.βΒ
Where heβd normally be standing up straight, his posture is slouched ever so slightly to take some strain off of his spine. (Sheβs one to talk β the way sheβs positioned with her arms crossed over her chest and shoulders hunched forward makes her look more like a question mark than a person.)Β
She almost feels bad for saying anything at all when he straightens his shoulders, until βΒ
βThe way youβre standing tells me your hip is sore.βΒ
It comes out of nowhere, just as sheβs trying to think of something else to say to distract him (and herself). She bites the inside of her cheek to try and school her reaction, but she still turns her head to glare at him. To make matters worse, he isnβt even looking at her. The perfect picture of discipline and obedience.Β
Fair play.
Because she had to dig in deeper, he doesnβt let her go with just a single comment. βAll your weightβs balanced on one leg.βΒ
And itβs even worse when heβs right. Scowling, she subtly shifts her posture so itβs more evenly dispersed, just out of spite. The pain in her hip flares as she does so, and she clenches her jaw as she pushes through it.Β
Cassianβs arm brushes against hers as he says softly, βDonβt bother. No oneβs paying any attention.β
Though she considers not moving just to make a point, she moves back to the loose, slouchy way sheβd been standing earlier. Yet she lingers closer to Cassian, eliminating the space between them: arm against arm, leg against leg.Β
βThat applies to you, too, Major.βΒ
Jyn feels his exhale rather than hears it, a look of consternation passing over her face when he doesnβt relax like she had. βCassian. . .βΒ
βI know, I know,β he mutters β yet does nothing. If anything, his posture gets even more rigid.Β Β
Stubborn bastard. Good thing she is, too. With a roll of her eyes, she immediately locks up her joints, full weight on her bad leg and standing so ramrod straight itβs like someone shocked her with a stun prod.Β
Cassian inhales sharply like someone has shocked him with a stun prod. She takes a good amount of satisfaction from that, fully intending to play this silly little waiting game until he finally fucking gives in and relaxes.Β
βJyn,β he hisses under his breath.Β
βCassian,β she hisses right back, moving in to nudge him gently with her shoulder in an attempt to shake him off his balance andβ
β β and Captain Erso will be leading the second strike team.βΒ
At the sound of her name, Jynβs head snaps up; Dravenβs looking right at her as he says it, like a school teacher chastising a misbehaving student. She waits, wondering if heβll call her out on it β she wouldnβt put it past him βΒ
After a pause, he continues on without interruption; huffing out a breath, she tucks her chin into her chest and glares, feeling not unlike a chastened schoolchild.Β
At her side, Cassian snickers quietly. βSeems like Captain Erso needs to be paying more attention.βΒ
She pinches his ribs in retaliation. βSo thatβs what gets your rocks off,β she hisses. βMe getting in trouble.βΒ
He doesnβt deny it, so she tacks on, βSadist.βΒ
βFunny,β he says on an exhale, amused. βYou said something similar last night.βΒ
Memories of the previous night come rushing back at his comment β how heβd kept her teetering on the edge for what felt like hours, leaving her cursing in every language she could think of while heβd smiled into her thigh and told her that patience was a virtue.Β
The way her ears redden at the recollection must be visible even in the dim lighting of the briefing room by the way Cassianβs grin tugs even further upward, so she pinches him again, right in the same spot.Β
But now that heβs got her mind on it β and pushing back the ever-growing urge to jump his bones here and now, briefing be damned β last nightβs activities are probably the reason both of them are sore today. Theyβre not as young (and uninjured) a few years ago, and especially not like they had been before Scarif. It likely hadnβt been a good idea to wrangle her leg up over his shoulders as heβd nearly bent her in half, but β well. In the moment, itβd been worth it.Β
For the remainder of the briefing, she does her best to remain focused, but itβs a futile battle. Though itβs not like she pays much attention to these sorts of things anyway, Cassianβs thoroughly distracted her enough that thereβs no chance in hell sheβll retain anything useful. After a painfully long time spent fidgeting and sighing β much to her partnerβs stoic amusement β Draven finally finished his tirade.Β
Had this not been the only time sheβd see Cassian all day, she would have bolted out of there.Β
As everyone begins to filter out of the room, they linger. Not too long to be suspicious, but she busies herself with her data pad as if thereβs something relevant on it, if only to spend a few more seconds at his side.Β
Cassian seems to feel the same, a scrap of flimsi in his hand, even if all of his attention is on her. βSee you later?βΒ
Jyn snorts good-naturedly. βYouβre that desperate for me, huh.βΒ
His mouth twitches upward.Β
βFine,β she drags the word out, as if they donβt sleep in the same bed every night. As much as she tries to keep her expression neutral, she canβt quite manage it. βIβll swing by the mess on my way over. We can have a picnic.βΒ
As they part, their hands brush, pinkies curling around each other for an extra second as they leave the room together. A fleeting moment of warmth that cuts through the chilling cold of Hoth.

The Pickup
"What is with you today?" Jyn asked as Cassian hit the gas through a yellow. She yanked her work badge off and tossed it down by her feet. She'd have to put it back on in twelve hours, but that was a twelve hours from now problem.
"Nothing," he said. "Listen, is it all right if we swing by the airport? I promised someone I'd give them a ride into town."
The big box store where they both worked was close enough to the airport that they got the request all the time. So Jyn said, "Yeah, fine, as long as I can get chicken nuggets on the way home."
"Deal."
She sighed and slouched into the passenger seat. Digging out her phone, she checked texts. Nothing from Bodhi.
She was supposed to be driving up to spend the long weekend with her foster brother, on leave from the Air Force. But then her car had crapped out, and she'd had to pick up extra hours at work in order to get it fixed. And of course all the best extra hours, with the holiday pay and everything, had been over this weekend.
It was fine, she told herself. It wasn't the end of the world.
It was just that she hadn't seen Bodhi outside of a Facetime call for months.

For Rebelcaptain May the Fourth celebration! Day Three: Reunion
I went back and forth about how much of Andor canon to include. But once I knew I was including a particular character, I felt like I had to stick to the rest - up to a certain point.
The song this comes from (Die Young by Sylvan Esso) came up randomly on my Tidal playlist, and it grabbed me by the throat and screamed "REBELCAP" in my face. I mean. What else could I do?
I Was Gonna Die Young (now I gotta wait for you, honey)
"Joreth Sward, as I live and breathe," the governor of the Dishita system boomed. "Where have you been hiding yourself?"
Sward lifted his drink, smiling broadly. "Serving the Empire, my friend, serving the Empire! What else? How have you been?"
"Stuck out here in the back of beyond, as you see." The governor made a face. "Hanging off the edge of civilization."
"You seem to be doing all right," Sward said, of a ballroom that was bigger than the house he'd grown up in, situated at the edge of a city that was also bigger than the one he'd grown up in.
"My wife has done what she could," the governor said apologetically.
The wife in question smiled tightly and said, "Joreth, you dear man, are you quite all right?" She gestured at the cane that he used to steady himself.
"I'm no worse than usual, ma'am," he said. "This is old news with me, I'm afraid. A speeder crash, about three years ago."
"I did hear something about that," she said. "How dreadful!"
He nodded. "Shattered my spine, and the doctors are still poking at it from time to time."
"Can I get you a chair?" the wife asked, all solicitous hostess. She snapped her fingers at a server. "A chair! Right now. Are you blind?"
He held up his free hand. "Oh, ma'am, I don't want to be trapped in a chair for your whole party. I'll be quite all right if I keep moving and don't give my muscles the chance to seize up."
She waved the server away and slipped her arm into his free elbow, starting them off on a slow circuit of the ballroom. He didn't resist, as a circuit suited his needs quite well. "Well, then, you must tell us the latest news from the mid-rim."

Ever since Scarif - or even further back, if he was being honest with himself - she'd never been far from him, always in arm's reach. On the beach they'd been as close as any two people could be.
He thought about the beach every day. The feel of her strength supporting his collapsing body, her shoulder the only sure thing in a world falling apart around them. When they'd left the turbolift and faced the glowing, bright corona racing towards them, he had known that he was going to die. Yet there had been no fear, no doubt. His mind had been clear for perhaps the first time in his entire life, filled with the certainty that he had finally arrived at the place he was always meant to be.
For once, Cassian Andor had come back in time.

Some appreciation for the Rogue One novelization (again). I think it's beautiful how Cassian was living in moment with Jyn carrying his weight :
Her faith carried him with her.
He didn't say any of it. He didn't want to disturb the silence as they rested against each other, hurting and relaxed, listening to the hum of machinery and the distant billowing of fires. He stowed thoughts of old missions and thoughts of the future away; decided to focus on what he could see and hear and smell for the last moments of his life on Scarif.
When Cassian Andor died, he would be ready, and he would be content.
