Lately, I’ve become more and more aware that I tend to lack a backbone. I want to be assertive and confident. No more letting people walk all over me. 

Here are some tips & tricks to help with growing a backbone…

1. Learn and practice saying no. Without explanation or reason. Just “no.” 

2. Stop apologizing before requesting/asking. For example, do not say “Sorry for bothering you…”, just say what you need to say. 

3. Always act like you know what you are talking about. No matter if the conversation is going how you expected it to. 

4. Drop unnecessary words. Get to the point. Example, don’t say, “I think I would try…” say “I will be doing…” 

5. If you mess up, be honest and forgive yourself. Do not be embarrassed or afraid to ask questions. 

6. Mind posture and body language. Use eye contact!!

The best way to incorporate these into everyday life is by practising these during insignificant interactions, such as when I go to the store, hold the door for someone, etc.
