AU where Tobirama dies instead of Izuna, and Izuna quickly realizes he misses him—so he puts himself under a genjutsu. He'll find a place he wants to show Tobirama, plop himself down in a corner and cast the genjutsu.
At first Tobirama is there and that's enough.
So much so that Madara has to find him, and force him back into reality occasionally; to eat, to sleep, to take care of himself. He tries talking sense into Izuna but Izuna can't stand to look at the void that Tobirama has left in his life.
Next time, Izuna tries taking Tobirama's hand, but it's cold. Izuna realizes he's never actually touched Tobirama before, and somehow his brain can't make the connection. He tells himself over and over, Tobirama is warm, even if he's never experienced his warmth, he knows it to be true, but it doesn't work. Tobirama stays cold. Izuna copes by not touching him again.
Then, his voice begins to fade. Slowly but surely, Tobirama's words get quieter and quieter, until they cut out completely. His mouth still moves, but no sounds come out. He's not sure why, but he soon grows to frustrated to find the cause. Izuna copes by lying in the grass next to him, silently, just staring into his eyes for hours on end.
Then, his face starts to blur. Izuna gets concerned now; surely he can't be forgetting his face? Is he losing his mind? His heart throbs when he looks at where Tobirama's face used to be, now just a vague smudge. Izuna copes by not looking again; he just sits there and stares at the grass, with Tobirama looming over him, never moving, never speaking.
Until one day, when Tobirama extends a hand and says:
"I've been waiting for you, Izuna."
Madara finds Izuna days later; cold, pale—never speaking again.
