A tale about a boy and his friends and a game they play together. About 8,000 pages. Don't say we didn't warn you.
(Oh wow, I had thought these were going to roll out much more slowly!) At the time of writing, my statistics page doesn't yet include the epilogue content. I do plan to include it, since is sure looks like a real part of the Homestuck story to me. My main reason for not jumping on it right away is that I'm out of town, away from my statistics generating code. I'll need to update it, because as usual when Homestuck grows a new appendage it gleefully breaks previous assumptions. (By the way, I love this.) Text only and branching narratives shouldn't be an issue, and scraping the new content reliably will just involve a little scripting. But. Hmmm. Is a page of the story one web page, or is it a stretch of text with a "> Title" at the top? Do I need new concepts? And this morning, I haven't even yet read through the main epilogues, so perhaps there are more structural surprises to come.

My first impressions of the VIZ Media relocated official website are pretty positive.
Content is pretty complete, not many problems (not my doc btw.) It's a pretty light (and self-aware) makeover in terms of the surround. The experience of reading the work/story is very substantially the same, so if you were thinking of asking for a copy of the offline archive because you really miss specific pixels of mspaintadventures.com - please don't.
Mostly, I'm hugely happy that there is an official effort to rid the story of its dependency on Flash. Long term, that dependency was going to really hurt the availability of this wonderful story. I had a variety of plans in place myself to battle this, but all approaches looked like they'd involve a huge amount of work which I was dreading having to undertake.
In honor of Homestuck's eighth birthday, let's try to explore what the average page of the story was like.
As Hussie described on his Formspring when inventing the thirteen year break, there's a lot of variation. "Most MSPA updates are a single panel, with some accompanying text. But [...] There are several hours of animated Flash footage mixed in with the updates. There are several more hours of interactive gameplay. [...] Many updates are accompanied by several pages of dialogue."
When a population contains outliers, the median can sometimes be a better average to consider than the mean. I'll take care to distinguish those concepts here, otherwise I'd have to hand in my stats badge.
In fact what I found was that the nature of the average page progressed over the course of the story. (āTYPICAL CASE OF QUADRANT VACILLATIONā, right?) So I have split out most of my calculations across its four different "Parts".
Part 1 (aka basically Acts 1 to 4) ran from 13 April 2009 to 11 June 2010, with 1989 pages at the rate of 4.7 per day.
59% were of the form Hussie considered typical: a media (i.e. image or Flash) panel plus some prose or a pesterlog. As many as 21% had more than one media panel on the page, though. (This reduced to 12% in Part 2, 8.5% in Part 3, and a measly 2.5% in Part 4.)
Part 2 (aka basically Act 5) ran from 12 June 2010 to 2 November 2011, with 2121 pages at the rate of 4.2 per day.
55% were typical. But, the story was getting more wordy. In Part 1 the mean number of words per page was 64, but in Part 2 it was 115. (This mean peaked at 136 in Part 3 and reduced back to 84 in Part 4.) The mean is consistently massively inflated by the wordiest pages, though: no Part has pages with a median word count more than 27.
Part 3 (aka Act 6 minus ActAct 6) ran from 11 November 2011 to 14 April 2013, with 2132 pages still at the rate of 4.1 per day.
It had the most "typical" pages: 61% of them. However, the images were more likely to be "higher quality" (if that means anything in this comic!) The mean size in bytes of an images increased from pretty much 70Kb in Parts 1 and 2 to 86Kb in this Part, eventually reaching 102Kb in Part 4.
Part 4 (aka A6A6 et al) ran from 12 June 2013 to 12 April 2017, including the huge pauses that meant its 1880 pages eked out at only 1.3 per day.
It still remained 56% typical. By now, 87% of the pages basically had just an arrow as their title. (This is another feature that changed smoothly over time: Part 1 has 5% such titles, Part 2 has 10%, and Part 3 has 35%.)
Talking of titles, the longest in terms of word counts form a nice sequence: Part 1 has fourteen word titles, Part 2 thirteen, Part 3 twelve and Part 4 eleven. (But all four Parts have the same longest title length in terms of character counts: it always maxes out at sixty. Pointless quiz: find all twenty-six titles of this length.)
Lastly: Part 4's twenty [S] flashes battled with the twenty-nine of Part 2 to be the longest (as I time them) on average. In Part 4 they had 1m25s median duration, 2m22s mean; in Part 2 it was 2m median and 2m19s mean. Meanwhile Part 1 and Part 3 had more (over fifty each) but they were usually shorter (respectively 50s median, 1m15s mean and 38s median, 1m23s mean.
The official Homestuck map was recently updated, giving names to the final ActActEtcs. (Turns out that The Rapture is simply the name of the Act 7 "anime".)
More significant for my bookkeeping, Hussie did take the previously discussed route of splitting Act 6 across Part 3 and a final Part 4, which evens things out nicely.
He also introduced another layer of hierarchy, splitting Homestuck into two Sides. And did other slightly odd things like including Act 7 and the Credits in Side 2 but not in Part 4. (Is that a canonical escape clue, or am I rubbing salt in old wounds?)

This post is basically about where those recent credits pages fit into the story according to my stats.
There were two new pages, timestamped as published some minutes before the start of 10/25 in EST. Although the second (the video) is linked from within the first (the click through Flash), both are accessible as regular pages with increasing numbers same as normal (p=010029 and p=010030) and they work coherently enough with the rest of the narrative.
So, even though Hussie described this as "post-canon content" (which I read as a nod to the idea that the kids in some sense escaped their story at its end) when it comes to measuring that story I've decided to just plug it in as two more pages at the end of Act 7 in Part 3 of Homestuck. The only slightly unusual choice on my part is to not include the sound, art and shout out credits in the word count - I figure you wouldn't usually include that kind of meta stuff as part of a work. I have included transcriptions of the snaps though, since they're more part of the story.
The Homestuck stats update to be 2755 days, 8126 pages, 14915 panels, 817925 words (166 [S]s, 4h12m18s)
Does anyone have any way to help make this happen?
@andrewhussie, please upload the original [S] Collide SWF(s) somewhere? Doesn't matter if playback is dodgy - just for assets and archival.

Update: heavenlyevan points out this implies it may have been released straight to video, as it were - i.e. no SWF.
To expand on the why ("assets and archival") - actually, it's probably others who would have most use for the art assets. It's the archival purposes I'm more interested in.
By its nature [S] Act 7 will remain a video, and it may never make sense to try to host a more complicated and platform-demanding collision of SWF(s) on the official site if the YouTube embed is working just fine. but... given that the eighteen minutes of [S] Collide do exist in their more native Homestuck form, it opens possibilities.
Related: why archiving web video offline sucks for me and a forum thread about the possibility.
While I currently have no need of an offline archive, what happens in the event that MSPA goes down, and you have the only official remaining copy of it? (I may or may not be asking after trying and failing to create my own archive of it)
I get this question every so often, so thought Iād answer it in full and in public.
Most commonly the enquiry comes from an ardent fan who is hoping for an archive copy now so that they have personal Ā insurance against such an event.
TL/DR: I feel you - we fear for what we love. But: shoosh, pap, covered.
Actually, shortly after I first gave an archive copy to a guy who added a few extras and made a very fancy āDisc 1ā DVD copy for an offline friend, the āwhat if?ā question came up in a thread on the official MSPA forums. One of the Homestuck creative team (if I remember correctly, tynic?) was fairly scathing: it wasnāt going to happen. Andrew and all friends with access to his digital treasure simultaneously vanish from the grid? There were, I believe tynic said, āmore pertinent paranoias you could be having.ā
(And Iām not totally sure what he said any more because⦠the entirety of the official MSPA Forums recently went offline and seem to be lost forever. Ah, how delicious the dramatic irony is right now.)
But for what itās worth: if the work was ever lost, of course Iād get a copy up into the Internet Archive. And if you really want to multiply in the chance that Iām missing too - over time, there have been sufficient individual copies of the archive made in appropriately special circumstances that Iām confident someone else would do it if I didnāt. So settle yourself into something appropriately bulbous and comfortable: Homestuckās not going anywhere.
Really, the long time safety of the work is more threatened by its partial but significant reliance on a particular form factor and on the ageing Flash platform. Itās possible that the ādigital copy of Homestuckā Kickstarter reward will (1) happen (2) be in a form that fixes this, but if it isnāt then Iāll kick off a background project re this eventual āpertinent paranoia.ā
According to my ad hoc rules, the Epipause is thirteen days old today, and it has just entered the list of ten longest MS Paint Adventures hiatuses.
Relatedly, I'm letting Homestuck remain unfinished according to my stats calculations - not out of a desire for plot closure or an expectation that the hypothetical epilogue will provide it (I feel otherwise) but because at the time of writing it sounds more likely than not that there will be an epilogue that we should consider part of that story.
Meanwhile the counter keeps ticking up and this is Day 2571 of Homestuck. (The start was Day 0. It works better that way.)

Iāve been collecting data on Homestuck dialogue since 2013 and thought I may as well do something pretty with it. So here you go!
(for those who saw the Reddit post, please be aware that this has been edited fairly substantially from the version posted there!)
Data collected from @readmspaās search pages, with things like chat abbreviations, emoticons and duplicate conversations removed (message me if you want a more thorough overview of all that).
One major decision I made was to group all versions of the same individual character together. Dave and Davesprite are merged, for instance, while Dave and Davepetasprite^2 arenāt. Dirk and his Auto Responder are merged, while Dirk and ARquiusprite arenāt. There was a bit of debate about this, but I went into my reasoning behind it here (long story short: Ultimate Selves yo).

Although web TV is a progressively happier video streamy wonderland, it hides a lot of horrible OS/browser/container/codec incompatibility behind its corporate servers. As someone compiling an offline archive in the form of a static local copy of the website that you open up in your browser, I had trouble with the final YouTubes.
Flash is surely a nasty proprietary format - and Iāll talk another time about how to meet the threat that eventually brings to the future of Homestuck - but it does have the advantage of working exactly the same across all the platforms that deign to support it, and being really really compact. I know Act 7 will stay as it is, but I hope Hussie releases the original SWF for Collide eventually.
Anyway, using workarounds with links that you can open in other applications in the worst case... the cross-platform testing Iām able to do suggests Iāve gotten away with adding only 280MiB of single format (H264 in mp4) content without leaving too many readers potentially unable to see the ending.
(Well, not any more than the rest of us #ouch #toosoon)
A couple of questions about your structural breakdown of the comic: 1) what are you doing with the 40 wordless pages between [S] Collide and [S] Act 7? They don't appear to be on here. 2) Shouldn't Act 7 be in white not in red? Similarly, shouldn't A666 be in black instead of dark green? Those are the colors they were in on the loading screen for [S] Collide
1) The 40 pages are counted in Homestuck, and counted in Part 3, but not in anything lower down than that. (Because, they are not in anything lower down than that. http://readmspa.org/stats/#faq re Curtains of God.)
2) Yes! My code was written before we had good colors, but Act 7 is definitely white, and your argument for A6A6A6 as black is good too. Iāve updated stuff.
We could be waiting for a while. Using the method employed by Andrew Hussie in an old Formspring post, given that MSPA started full production on 09 Mar 2008, then to produce the 9803 pages since at the perfectly fine rate of one page per day would take until 11 Jan 2035, earning him a 18 year 9 month break starting from today.
And I have no more words. At least: not as many as I was expecting to get at Homestuckās end today. Have to make do with just the 817,612 of them.

As I'm sure many of you noticed, the last page of today's update is p=010000. There aren't actually 10,000 story p= pages on the mspaintadventures.com website yet because reasons, but we now know we will just pass that number by the end of Homestuck because leaks.
Edit: updated given April 9 update contained both ah and rings.
Edit: and again given April 11 update had only half of johndad.
As this 4chanĀ theory describes, some Homestuck page metadata has been uploaded in advance of the pages/art, and ipgd additionally leaked that Act 7 will be just two pages. The initial assumption was that there would be one named set of pages from the metadata leak for each update before Act 7. In practice they didnāt match up quite so evenly (and Iāve been editing this post in response!) But unless April 12 or Homestuck in general contains more than we expect, we currently have a pretty firm idea of how most stats will end up.
Homestuck will end on page p=010028. Its stats will show 2559 days, 8124 pages, probably 14911 panels, probably 164 [S]s. CanātĀ sensibly predict how many words will feature in Act 7, but I imagine at least thousands more to add to today's total of 817,754.
At that point the stats for MSPA as a whole will show 10002 pages. Yes, we barely pass a very round milestone if we count the number of unique p= pages found in stories on the website. That simple definition cuts an arbitrary line through a bunch of edge cases about what a page really is and deals with some missing/duplicate numbers: you can read the messy details here.
I won't update any of my running stats ahead of time; I'll let them update themselves if/when it really happens.
We won't know for sure until after the brief pause, but that should be just about the end of A6A6I5. There are usually some closing curtains, so unless the EoA6 Flash straddles sections like [S] Game Over did, I guess we'll get at least one more page, assumed below.
For a denouement build up section, A6A6I5 turned out pretty big. My crude percentage breakdown reckons it is 8% of the whole story. Its 88,187 words form 11% of the Homestuck total, and a 636 page count will equal that of A5A1. My old breakdown visualization (which updates itself when new data comes in) shows what a big chunk of A6A6 this one intermission was.
...yeah, OK, this post is just the statistics version of an antsy pants dance while waiting for Wednesday.
