Eurocentric history serves no one.
Ronald Takaki Strangers From a Different Shore Page 7.
There is a new exhibit at the museum that is focusing on the stamps and currency of this time period. I need to brush up on my Chinese modern history.
Omitting or absolving Wilson's racism goes beyond concealing a character blemish. It is overtly racist. No black person could ever consider Woodrow Wilson a hero. Textbooks that present him as a hero are written from a white perspective. The coverup denies all students the chance to learn something important about the interrelationship between the leader and the led. White Americans engaged in a new burst of racial violence during and immediately after Wilson's presidency. The tone set by the administration was one cause. Another was the release of America's first epic motion picture.

Textbook authors commonly use another device when describing our Mexican adventures: they identify Wilson as ordering our forces to withdraw, but nobody is specified as having ordered them in! Imparting information in a passive voice helps to insulate historical figures from their own unheroic or unethical deeds.

The truth is that Helen Keller was a radical socialist. She joined the Socialist part of Massachusetts in 1909. She had become a social radical even before she graduated from Radcliffe, and not, she emphasized, because of any teachings available there.

MIND BLOWN.
This reminds me of what the mission of my job is and how it is connected to rest of the Asian Immigrant Community. Collect, Preserve, and Educate. Many tourists visit the museum and have absolutely zero clarification on the Asian immigrants who arrived onto the American continent for over 150 years.
In US History class, the centuries of African Slave Trade is the larger focus than the Pacific theater.
I live in San Diego, where the US meets Mexico, and Asia is just a boat ride away. I didn't learn any in-depth knowledge about what other people experienced until it was shown on TV in historical dramatizations and documentaries.
When I realized how ignorance and institutionalized racism shaped my behavior and speech, I vowed to myself to become more educated and instill a change of heart.
So many textbooks, so little time
I suppose this endeavor was going to be hindered because of the 4 classes I'm taking this semester. I am not caught up on 4 textbooks+ worth of reading for the first week of school.
Then again, the first week is always kind of lax until the following week.
Hope my mini vacation this weekend doesn't throw off the insane amount of work I have been doing.
I also realize that having a full time job and taking a full course load makes me much more tired than I have ever imagined.
The first night of my on-campus class, I went to sleep right away, at 9:30 pm. That is considerably earlier than I have EVER gone to sleep naturally in months.
Just last night, I stayed up until 1 am studying, organizing notes, and watching cartoons in the background.
Maybe I'll try to squeeze in these books in between my homework and studying to get both done. The cartoons and the loud music might be overstimulating.

Finally.
A book not just for pleasure, but for academic enrichment.
I know that when I get back into school, I want to get credentialed for math first. I still have this bond with history, anthropology, social studies, cultural relativism, globalism.
I found this book in an indie bookstore when I was out to lunch last week. I had the thought, "If I had a dollar for every time I bought a book without finishing the previous book, I would use those dollars to buy more books."
Since this is the beginning of book number 3 in my mission to read all of my books, I hope I'm making good progress.
Once I finish this book, I'll have a routine down correct?
In the morning, I start a new semester at the community college to take some required child development and educational classes. Going back to class after graduating two years ago has given me some anxious and nervous feelings.
Success is in my future, as long as I stick to my goals and promises to myself.
On the night of the show, I sat in the audience among friends and family, my mother next to me. At the end of the performance, Eve came out on the stage and asked those of us who were or knew victims of violence to stand. I stood. My mother stood. Almost everyone in the audience stood. I began to understand "Why V-Day?"

Eve Ensler The Vagina Monologues Page 132
When I watched this production in college and it came time to this moment, I stood and tears filled my eyes. The pain and fear came rushing back in a huge wave and the energy of the crowd, 95% standing together, healed me. This powerful battle of energy forces from within me and around me, the healing power of community won this battle. I was healed from my pain and suffering for that moment.
My Angry Vagina
Eve Ensler The Vagina Monologues Pages 69-73
This entire monologue is something miraculous. When I watched a fellow student perform this, it opened up a new fire of feminism and self-pride within me that I hadn't realized before.
I'm always fighting within my mind and to the people around me, comprehending the world, the patriarchy, those who fight it, how the world relapses on misogyny, everything.

The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler
YES.
Someday, I will have my children read this.
Their father should already be well versed in respect for the vagina and for all women.
I watched the play while I was in college. One of my more conservative and Western religion practicing friends invited me. It was enlightening to see and feel safe experiencing sexual awakening with her.
I bought the book recently at a large warehouse of discounted old books. I plan to give this to others, so they too can become the vagina!
to give or to receive
My growing years are filled with memories of when I was selfish and didn't have a sense of justice for others. I understand it is a part of becoming an adult. I understand it is a part of living life as an adolescent. Making mistakes and figuring out what is right and wrong is part of the painful journey. The transformation and the revelations. It justifies why I live for giving now.
We make a living by what we get, but we forge a life by what we give.
Winston Churchill, (1874-1965), British Prime Minister

When the student inevitably asks, "When are we ever going to need this in real life?" the answer is not what they expect: never. These exact days, figures, and problems? You'll probably never need them. The real lesson here is the diligence, cooperation, resilience, flexibility, critical thinking, and problem solving you are actively using today.

David gave this to me as a birthday gift when I turned 23.
I read a little when I first received it. But, I don’t think I finished it.
My next birthday is just a few months away.
I’m starting classes again in a week.
Back to school.
Back to reading.
This time around, I want to read everything.
