5 TV shows that warm the heart
Sarika Ram reveals some of the best feel-good shows to watch as a family.
1. Full House
The Tanner Family has become symbolic of 90’s American television and for good reason. Full House balances humor, as seen in the various characters’ cute catchphrases, with the theme of a strong family bond in the face of trauma and conflict.

Interview with student Bianca
Sarika Ram interviews student Bianca Trottier about the positive and negative developments in today’s society.
Q: What do you think is the biggest problem in society today?
A: I think it’s shaming of girls with all the posters that portray women as skinny, and then young girls feel pressured to look a certain way.
Q: How do you think that this problem can be stopped?
A: Start putting more models with curves.
Q: Is there anything we can personally do to stop this problem?
A: We, as girls, are always like “ah, we’re so fat!” but if we start being more positive, I think that would have a good impact.
Q: What is something you think is a positive movement or advancement in society today?
A: The Gay Pride movement and in general, being more accepting to transgender people, gay marriage, etc. is a positive development.
Q: What do you think the world needs more of?
A: I think the world needs more peace, especially because of events like the Syrian Civil War because many people leave their homes and families and in the process, go through a lot of emotional stress and in come cases, even die.
Q: If you could say anything to the up-and-coming generation, what would it be?
A: Stop being on your phone and go outside.
Interview with Supervisor Emily
Sarika Ram interviews supervisor Emily about her time as a student at Cambridge University.
Q: Why did you choose to apply and attend Cambridge?
A: I researched the course and the university and I thought I would really enjoy it here. The Natural Sciences course at Cambridge, I felt was the course I liked the most as opposed to studying Natural Sciences or Biology at other universities. I also like the environment at Cambridge. I like city universities. I don’t like the idea of having an isolated campus so that was a plus for me in applying to Cambridge.
Q: Why did you choose that subject?
A: I chose Natural Sciences because I really like science and biology and I wanted to learn more about it.
Q: What were your expectations about Cambridge and how were they met or not met?
A: I was expecting to feel sort of out of place because I never went to a private school. No one in my family had been to university before, and I came from comprehensive in South London where most people didn’t apply let alone get into Cambridge or Oxford. So, I was expecting to be a bit out of place. There was an element of that, but it was nowhere near as bad as I expected. I have found some of the best friends in Cambridge. I feel like I have more in common with them than anyone I made friends with at school. I really love my time here so far.
Q: What has been your favorite or most life-changing moment while studying at Cambridge?
A: I have tried so many new things after coming to Cambridge. I was never really good at sports at school because I can’t catch to save my life. But I thought, you know, it’s Cambridge, so I’ll have a go at rowing. And, I really really love that. I found a great community within the boat club, and it was great for my fitness and health overall because you get up, do some sport, and then go to lectures which helped me maintain a good schedule. It was also really relaxing to get your head out of studying and do some sport. There’s so many extracurricular things you can get involved in at Cambridge so there’s never a dull moment. I’m always busy or doing something like going to a play, going out with my friends. That’s been the best thing about Cambridge.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I’ve just finished my second year, so I graduate next year. So, this should be the time I’m thinking about applying for graduate courses or taking a gap year. Because I’m not really sure, I think I might take a gap year and apply after I graduate. I’m currently thinking about graduate-entry medicine potentially or maybe a Master’s course and then giving myself more time to figure it out. If I take a gap year, I want to go to France because my dad’s French but I can’t speak French and I’d like to learn how to so I can communicate better with my dad’s side of the family. So, I could be an AuPair or study at a French university and be a lab assistant. Just something I can do for a year and I can give myself some time to figure out: do I want to be a scientist or do I want to be a doctor?
Q: What is your favorite spot in Cambridge and why?
A: I really like the Backs. So, it’s the part of Cambridge that runs along the River Cam through the center of town. If you’re there really early in the morning, it’s quiet and calm and there’s no one about, but during the day, it’s completely different. Suddenly, it’s full of punts and it’s really funny watching people fall in and try punting. You can just sit there with a couple of friends and have a picnic at the riverbank and it’s really nice.
In a dreamlike state, Rohil Bajaj gets up and leaves his work to enjoy the outdoors and escape stress.

Interview with Dom the supervisor
Nada Alshoaibi asks supervisor Dom about his experience in Cambridge, the expectations he had for himself, and his advice to future applicants.
Q: What is your name? How old are you? and where do you study?
A: Hello. I am Dom, I am 20 years old, and I study at the university of Cambridge.
Q: What is it like attending Cambridge?
A: It’s a bit mental really, a lot of fun, a lot of hard work and you make really great friends and they have weird traditions, but really good fun.
Q: Do you think you were going to get accepted to Cambridge at first?
A: No. I thought … for maths you need to take an exam called step and I thought I failed and got a lower grade, but then I passed somehow and now I'm here. Very exciting.
Q: Did you grow as a person due to university?
A: Yes loads. Having to live on my own and take care of myself and my own money and my own food and getting myself to class - that made me mature a lot.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A: I would go to the Bavarian alps, because I really love Germany. It’s a lovely place and I've heard skiing is very good and I've always wanted to try skiing.
Q: Do you regret attending Cambridge?
A: No, there are some days when I'm cycling in the rain and I sort of feel like ugh why am I here? but it’s been really good fun and I really enjoy it.
Q: What advice do you have for future applicants?
A: Find what subject you are going to do and do it because you love it not because it’s the right thing for your career or anything like that, do a subject you really really love and something that is going to make you smile when you do your work.
Interview: Anushka Rasheed interviews Tim the supervisor
Q: What’s your favourite childhood memory?
A: Oh that’s a hard one, I think England winning the world cup in 2003.
Q: If you could bring one musician back from the dead who would it be and why?
A: Hmm Mozart because all the modern artists i like aren’t dead so i couldn’t choose.
Q: If you had to choose to live without one of your five senses, which one would you give up?
A: I would lose feeling, to be able to touch.
Q: What animal represents you best and why?
A: A wolf because they’ve got aggression, resilience and deal well with hard environments
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A:I see myself running reach Cambridge.
Q: If you could take 3 items with you to a deserted island what would they be?
A: A barbell, a squat rack and a rugby ball.
Q: What was your dream job growing up and why?
A: An engineer because i always liked building things and maths. I liked producing and making things and I’ve never really been artistic so i knew i would go into that field.

Reach Cambridge’s Sabre Charity auction fundraising amount topples last year’s total
By Sarika Ram
This past week, Reach Cambridge international summer school held its annual charity auction for Sabre, raising £2,700. This organization is significantly changing the early education system in Ghana.
In the spirit of giving, Reach students bid on the services that were offered. For example, on student paid £100 for a delivery of flowers, and the highest bid was on the exclusive King’s College tour, racking up £385.
These international students offered various services to be put up for auction, including guitar and language lessons, laundry services, and breakfast-in-beds. In addition to the students, camp supervisors offered higher end prizes, like a personalized punting tour and a once-in-a-lifetime rooftop tour of King’s College.
Every summer, Reach Cambridge holds many events along with the auction, like the “Fete of Fun” carnival and Sabre Day. What makes this year’s charity auction so unprecedented is that the £2,700 raised in this event along has already overtaken previous fundraising records. (Pic: Flickr)
Reach Cambridge visits the Victoria and Albert museum and Harrods
By Nada AlShoaibi and Anushka Rasheed
Reach Cambridge organized a trip to central London where they took the students to the Victoria and Albert museum, where they looked at the ancient art and learnt about the past through the images.
The supervisors then took the students to Harrods to look around and enjoy themselves as they were free to roam around under supervision. They got to explore inside one of the most famous department stores in the world.
The trip ended by the students gathering up outside Harrods and heading back to the bus which would then take them back to Cambridge.
