Wanted to draw a short visual introduction of how Rei looked like as a kid and how she looks like now as a Demon Slayer 🙈 🧡
I'm really happy with this comic and I wish to continue making more 🧡 I'm still learning things along the way. I left some things vague on purpose as I wish to return to those scenes later and do them more in-depth.
Rei lived in a small village in a forest with her sick mother. She spent her time doing errands, taking care of her mother and providing her with medicine from the local doctor. It was a tough, but peaceful life. Until one night, the village was under attack by demons. Both Rei and her mother survived the attack in hiding, but with most of the villagers killed, including the local doctor, her mother was cut off from her medicine, which eventually led to her passing away. Rei mourned her mother, unable to move out from the village. The next day, the demons returned and attacked the village again, what was left of it. At that moment, Rei was kneeling in front of her mother's grave when a demon attacked her, scarring her eye. Rei was at risk of dying until a Hashira swooped in to save her, killing all the demons. Inspired by the Hashira, she wanted to become a swordsman like them to avenge her mother and save people threatened by demons.
With her village destroyed, Rei had to move out and live in a neighbouring village. There, she found a dojo which she wanted to join, to train and become stronger. However, they rejected her because she was a girl. Regardless, she trained in secret, peeking through the fence of the dojo, trying to copy their training regime. One day, someone spotted her and asked her what she was doing. At first, she was hesitant to answer thinking she'd be ridiculed again, but the stranger encouraged her to answer wondering what made her resolve so strong. When she answer him, this is when he revealed to be a Wind Breathing Cultivator from the Demon Slayer Corps. He offered her, but also challenged her, to undergo his training if she is capable of becoming a swordswoman as she claims.
After a year of training, her talent shined through and she learnt Wind Breathing, bringing her to pass the Final Selection and officially joining the Demon Slayer Crops.

Her mentor is Sanemi Shinazugawa. She is his student, not his tsuguko.
Overtime, she develops a crush on Genya Shinazugawa.
She likes to do sumi-e ink painting in her free time, but she keeps it a secret.

How does she end up a part of the Uzui family? And what are her favorite pastimes/hobbies with each of them? I think of them...

How did she become part of the Uzui family?
Otsuyu stems from the same Shinobi Clan like him and his wives, so they've grown up similiarly. Her family isn't specialised in fighting though, but into brewing poison (as well as withstanding it) and infiltration - so she was trained in this direction early on.
Instead of brewing vicious poison though, she had a bigger interest in understanding them and creating antidotes. While it was a practical mindset and skill, she was criticised for showing too much mercy to the test-subjects and slowly led to medical training instead of combat. The more she thrived in that direction, the more disposable she became for her lineage.
So much so, she was gifted to Tengen and his (also pretty much gifted wives) at the age of 9 as a handmaiden who will be their midwife, when the time has come. As much as it hurt her to be given away like this, she already expected that she won't ever live up to her family's expecations.
Tengen, who was already weary of the clans' cruelty, knew she'd never be treated like a human in there. Hell, neither was he nor his wives. So, when he - this 15 years old(!) - decided to flee the clan together, he basically tucked her under his arm.
A lot like with Hinatsuru, Makio and Suma, he had to work hard to let her see her own value - without the burdens of the clan. It took a lot of words and headpats to make her accept the freedom they now have.
It's no wonder why she values the four so much, because in the 8 years they've spent together, they've really grown into a family and she could pursue to become an apothecary instead of a maid that jumps at every whim. Tengen will also feel a sense of pride, whenever she decides something for herself - like instead of retiring along with him, she'll help out at the Butterfly Mansion.

Things sometimes intertwine and they do a lot together. Though sometimes, she deliberately gives them time for themselves so they can be more intimate without things becoming weird haha.
I heard Ufotable is participating in the Awa Odori festival, which means we might get an Awa Odori Genya illustration...!! I got so excited I drew him participating already!!
